I think it was around 1968...junior high for me....when we were wearing out the 45 of this song on the old HiFi set. This beautiful song is so unique in it's "sound" that you could really never pair another song with it....except another Gordon Lightfoot song like "Beautiful". I could list 30 or 40 other 45s that were in the same stack with this song....and they are all obscure 60's classics.....but none have survived like If You Could Read My Mind. "As long as I'm a Ghost you can't see"....what junior high kid hasn't felt that? |

This is what I call music making mastery. There was such an awesome team...not just the writing and performing...but the arranging. Just imagine....knowing not to write more verses....to just "let it be". The temptations to stretch and expand must have been strong. |

I dated the "love of my life" five years after the breakup.....and I know exactly what he meant as he was driving away. We can build one helluva fairy tale image in our minds .....when apart. The chance meeting took him right back to reality....the feelings he felt when he was so willing to let her walk away. It almost broke my heart to know the illusion was now gone....too. |

Your Dad was my age...so JT music was probably a huge part of his high school years too. This song and "Long Ago and Far Away" were very very sad songs that he probably listened to like I did...a thousand times ....at 17. They spoke to our inner sadness and told us that we were not alone. These were very personal songs. |

Yes, it is a lullaby, but not your typical lullaby. It's sound and tone were so sweet and gentle that I sang it to my own children....although I always felt a bit strange doing it.
It is really a very sad monolouge about a man's lost life...in which his only happiness is this small child. He knew no "love songs" and couldn't sing "the blues anymore".....numb to the depression of his life. But, he said: "I can sing this song....and you can sing this song when I'm gone". As if to say....this is really all I can promise you about life.
Alot of JT's songs, at least through the Mud Slide Slim album were very depressing words from a very depressed man. Hauntingly beautiful stuff.
Upbeat songs that came after like "The Secret of Life"....came from a JT that had healed himself in so many ways. |

The time frame JT wrote this was a few years after Fire and Rain....another beautiful sad song ....that was inspired by the suicide of a friend in New York while he was living in England recording at Apple (the beatles) studio....still fighting his own drug dependency. I don't know if "Long Ago and Far Away" was about the same thing but I know that to me....a 17 year old in High School in 1971....the song spoke about a world in which none of my dreams had come true. It was my song. |

I dated a girl once who kept me on the string while looking for someone "better financed". While waiting for committments from her suiters, she kept me ....on the string....just in case and made no bones about it.
The almost feminine poetry of the song reflects the imasculation of accepting this pathetic role.
There is a very fine line between being romantic and being pathetic....the difference is all in how the poetry is received.....not how it is intended. |

Nothing complicated here....but you'd have to have been with someone awhile like Neil and Peggy (who have just announced divorce after 30 some years). It doesn't mean "I still love you the same way"....it means I'll never stop loving the love I remember and would love to "see" it one more time. We can always have that "moment" again. Love doesn't stay the same...but we can still honor what was. |
