Alice in Chains – A Little Bitter Lyrics 7 years ago
The song is about the immoral act of creation, especially by a deity. It's basically forcing someone into the world, so that it can eventually decide whether it wants to torture them forever or not. There's really no way to justify creating another being, because the initial act was done for the god's own personal benefit and without the 'created' person's permission.

"Was it fun creating?"

"My god's a little sick"

It goes onto criticize the people who follow said god, who are thieves and parasites upon humanity.

They don't like religion at all. Layne's explained how religious hypocrisy is a constant theme in a lot of his songs. Jerry even says the same. There was an interview with him where he talks about Man in the Box, Bleed the Freak, God Am, etc., and basically tells people to just read the lyrics and realize it's all criticism about religion.

The song is about how whacked out religions and deities are. It's not about censorship, or calves. or whatever other baloney. It's about how messed up religion is. This is a quote from Jerry Cantrell in a 2011 SPIN interview, when asked about the meaning of The Devil Put Dinosaurs Here:

"I don't know that I've ever said we never had a message. What I probably said is that a lot of stuff we say is not completely overt. Even in that song, I think there is a poetry and lyricism and a sense of humor. It's not a subject we haven't thought about or written about before — "Man in the Box," "God Smack," "Bleed the Freak." Read the lyrics. It's not new territory. It's not a political thing, like railing against the church or a faith. It's just "What the fuck? Really?" There are some things that don't work here anymore. Can we incorporate some facts into our belief system? Can we be nicer to each other? Can we accept somebody that believes something different than you, and we can try not to hurt them if they do?"

"I'm the man in the box"

"I'm the dog that gets beat"

Yeah, lot of calves mentioned there.

At best, he might use the imagery to highlight the similarities of being an animal stuck in a box, and a person finding itself forced into the world by their crazy death god.

Or, he was too sensitive/afraid to discuss the song's actual anti-religious sentiment at the time. But if that's the case, then, thankfully, he got over that by the time they wrote God Am.

Way too many religious folks here trying to mangle the meaning of this song.

It's pretty simple. The song criticises the system of a two-faced, insecure "savior". It's all nice and sunshine to you until you disagree with it, then it burns you in hell forever.

"Feed my eyes" and "Now you've sown them shut". These are the keys. You feed someone religious dogma when they're looking to be 'saved', but once that person realizes what a sham the religion/god is, their eyes get shown shut and they want nothing more to do with it.

They're sown shut by seeing what a tyrant the god is, who forces people into existence so that it can decide if it wants to torture them forever or not.

The song is about the sham of religion. You can do whatever you want, kill whoever you want, and avoid any punishment by repeating a few lines afterwards.

It's basically pointing out the silliness of a system.

Opinions of a song have nothing to do with discussing it's original meaning. The author had something in mind when writing it, and that's what people are trying to figure out.

It's fine if you take the song a certain way, but that's not the point here. We want to know what Layne's intent was.

" "Jesus Christ, Deny your maker, He who tries, Will be wasted." This line obviously states that there is no reason to run from God or try to defy him,"

That's not what it means. The line just highlights what psychopathic tyrants all these gods are. They force people into existence, and if those people realize how idiotic their god is, they then get tortured forever.

And really, there is nothing ambiguous about god in AiC's songs. They either don't believe in any, or have tons of problems with one if it did exist.
