WOW, okay, so my interpretation is SO different from the top two it makes my head hurt, so I am moved to enter my own ever popular phrase by phrase analysis... (Hope dangles on a string Like slow-spinning redemption Winding in and winding out The shine of it has caught my eye) ~ First, he's describing seeing a glimmer of hope, as one might see a light glimmer off a crystal on a string, which I believe is FOR his relationship ~ (And roped me in So mesmerizing so hypnotizing I am captivated I am) ~ he WANTS this glimmer of hope, which I believe is HER, or at LEAST her apologizing to HIM because he is... ~ (Vindicated) ~ vindication comes from an EXTERNAL source that PROVES a person right, I don't know what that is of course, but I think winning her back or getting an apology from her would fit, (^_^) ~ (I am selfish I am wrong I am right, I swear I'm right Swear I knew it all along) ~ now that his vindication has come he's going over his emotions since the fight: first he wanted to cave because he thought, in a panic as I certainly have been after an argument, maybe HE'D been the selfish one, maybe HE was wrong! But he held it together and didn't go back cause he was RIGHT! Buuut then he starts to buckle again and has to bolster himself and so he SWEARS to himself he was right! Then, he has to SWEAR he knew it all along! - pretending he DIDNT just go thru all that doubt, or MAYBE acknowledging the fact it WASNT so cut and dry as HE was right and SHE was wrong... Maybe they BOTH were at fault ~ (and I am flawed But I am cleaning up so well I am seeing in me now the things you swore you saw yourself) ~ now that he's landed on the idea they were both at fault he ADMITS he's flawed... But he's gettin better ;), and of course since they were/are in love, she saw all these amazing things in him that he couldn't, but his confidence TOO is improving ~ (So clear like the diamond in your ring) ~ they were engaged ~ (Cut to mirror your intention Oversized and overwhelmed) ~ you buy a diamond to show ur intentions, both of which (the diamond and the intentions) were too grand... They just weren't RDY to be engaged ~ (The shine of which has caught my eye And rendered me so isolated) ~ she threw the diamond back at him after the fight, and sometime later the glimmer catches him off guard from a drawer somewhere making him feel so alone... ~ (So motivated) ~ ...that he decides he WILL win her back, which he does, bringing US back too... ~ (I am certain now that I am Vindicated I am selfish I am wrong I am right, I swear I'm right Swear I knew it all along and I am flawed But I am cleaning up so well I am seeing in me now the things you swore you saw yourself) ~ see above ~ (So turn up the corners of your lips Part them and feel my fingertips Trace the moment, fall forever Defense is paper thin Just one touch and I'd be in too deep now To ever swim against the current) ~ he's happy she's willing, but trepidatious. Love love LOVE this song ^_^! I also love this site and reading what other ppl think. They rly make ME think! I'd NVR considered the possibility of the song being about attempted suicide but I can rly see that now... As a possibility at least :). Idk enough about the lyricist to say I agree :(. I also rly liked zimdelinvasor's interpretation of fame which rang more true to me given some of the lyrics in his other songs. My OWN view of the song was that it might be about a simple dream he had, or maybe drug use; seeing crazy visions and realizing that what once might have been considered "harmless" fun can actually RLLLY fuck up ur life to say the LEAST of sending u on a bad trip, but again, I don't rly know much about the writer and if he evn uses lol! One thing I WOULD like to say to evry1 who dissects EVRY line to fit their POV is that ur PROB making a mistake in that. I've written stories and poetry and the like and fought w/ metaphors and keeping them going and doing so for THIS length of time and having each and EVRY line work is JUST about impossible! WHATEVER the song is REALLY about, I'd put my money on the idea that he started w/ the metaphor of alien abduction to describe SOMETHING, and then put in lines to fit THAT theme that rly didn't have much or anything to do with the deeper meaning at all! Like the lines Zim was struggling with about the Nile. Ppl talk about aliens building the pyramids and having visited ancient Egypt all the time. It's POSSIBLE that those were filler lines that SOUNDED great in the song and advanced the abduction theme but aren't actually ABOUT fame or suicide or drugs or ANYTHING at all ^_^! Of course THOSE lines could also be ascribed to his believing one thing at the beginning of the song, and then realizing a much greater truth by the end that ppl who haven't BEEN there either don't know or won't believe... Like, hangin w/ Zim's meaning here, MOST ppl believe that SOMEHOW fame will make them happy. HOW they think ppl watching their EVRY move, publicizing their faults, criticizing their views and just WAITING for them to screw up so they can eat them alive is a GOOD thing I don't know, (oh THANK YOU sweet God for NOT making me famous in ANY way ;*) <3 <3 <3) but a LOT of ppl ACTUALLY DO... and maybe by saying 'the Nile used to run from east to west' (which would require the earth to be spinning the other way, which I assume MOST scientists would say is impossibe) he means "the aliens" told him that what evry1 believes about stardom creating happiness is actually FALSE and maybe evn BACKWARDS... But STILL... How many ppl would ACTUALLY believe that?? |
