It seems to me knopfler reveals two great truths about relationships and the human experience. 1. Feeling close to someone and having fun feels pretty damn good. Whether its a profound love or an infatuation with a good friend that is being reciprocated. She "calls him" and "loves him so tender" so for the most part she's into him. Thus they are close. So yea, we are social creatures and evolutionarily driven to sex so this kind of relationship is pretty much cocaine for the soul. Who cares if she's the one. This is what life is about. Chasing after the amazing feeling of closeness and exciting experiences with other human beings. 2.No matter how much cocaine for the soul is the bomb diggity, we secretly always crave her to be that profound love we've tasted once before. But this time the chemistry will be there and it will last forever. That closeness, that understanding this beautiful person shares with you isn't fleeting like a caffeine buzz. Its forever. | For starters, the song is saying that in order to actually leave someone whom you have been romantically involved with for some time, you have to go cold turkey and get away from the lover. This point is illustrated from the lines, " get on the bus Gus, don't need to discuss much, just drop off the key lee, and get yourself free". The more tricky part of this song to understand is the part where the girl kisses him and then the narrator, if you will, says "I realized she was probably right, there must be 50 ways to leave your lover." It just means that after the girl kissing him and asking him to sleep on the the decision to leave his lover, sleep with her that is, that leaving his lover won't be that impossible at all. In fact there could be 50 or so ways to do it. The song is a happy song that trys to convey that it may seem really hard to do, but in order to leave your lover you have to get the hell away from the one you've been involved with and just start messing around with someone else. The saying 50 ways to leave your lover is just a metaphor expressing the idea that it is very easy to get over your lover. | |
