Deftones – Diamond Eyes Lyrics 9 years ago
I know this is probably not the intended meaning, but when I hear this song I always picture a scenario about a junkies who are in love. One of them dies by overdosing on meth and the other is responding to their death. He/she is saying that one day they will also overdose and meet their significant other in heaven, where it rains meth from the skies.
"Diamonds rain across the sky," meth is sometimes called crystal and in a junkies' eyes it can hold such a high value and consume most of their life that they might look to meth as one would look at diamonds. ("when the needle breaks" could also be a reference to heroin, but that's just a guess).
"Time will see us realign, shower me into the same realm," is what makes me believe it was an overdose because their saying one day I'll meet up with you and I'll be in that realm that you are. The realm referring to the intensive high that can kill a person and how it must be like heaven.

Just an idea.

Rise Against – The Black Market Lyrics 9 years ago
This is my favorite song on their new album! The melody change between the verses and the chorus catches you off guard and is really unique. The fact that they can make that change sound so fluid is a testament to their talent.
As for the meaning, it seems to be about the depressive phase after a breakup. Although that's a rather cliche meaning behind a rock song, they pull it off in an interesting and original way.

A currency of heartache and sorrow
The air we breathe is stale with mold
To shadows we are slaves digging deeper every day
But emptiness is growing so old
[Their relationship centered around trading pain and misery, but it was always the same and it became too redundant. They remain slaves to their own misfortunes.]

Headlamps light the tunnels we wander
They shimmer and they dance on the walls
We're lost inside these caves as the chances of escape
Grow slimmer 'til there's no chance at all
[There are glimpses of hope, but the longer they remain in the dark about who they are and what they're doing, the harder it is to achieve it.]

This ink, it travels from the page
Up my hand and to my veins
Choking on those stories I've told
If there are words here left to say
I just want to let you know
[Pretty self explanatory. With each song he writes, he becomes submersed in his past issues.]

I'm falling on my knees right now
I'm covered in the mess I made
These colors used to wash right out
But now they are a part of me
And I've been searching for a remedy
When all along it's been in front of me
I need you here, I need you now
Right now
[He used to be able to suppress this depressive feeling, but now it has consumed him. Now that he is aware of this he also becomes aware that it was this person's presence that helped him with misery, but she is long gone.]

We traffic in the blackest of markets
Trade misery like diamonds and gold
The angst that we exchange for applause or petty praise
Is finally now taking its toll
[They look for attention to hold off negativity, but it doesn't work for long.]

But there's a world above the ground
A life that we can lead
We're washing off the dirt from our clothes
I don't want to live without
I just wanna let you know
[Again, pretty self explanatory. We can leave this all behind us and try to get on with our lives.]

(Black stains) they mark me like a letter
(Won't fade) cracking under the pressure
(Black stains) nothing stays gold
[His struggle with pushing out the negativity. He can keep it at bay for awhile, but it always comes back.]

Your voice it washes the stains away
(Wash the stains away)
(Wash the stains away)
[A plea for her to come back and relieve his depression.]

That's just my interpretation.

Slipknot – The Heretic Anthem Lyrics 9 years ago
I think this song is making fun of the people that brush them off as satanic. There are a lot of people, truly ignorant ones, that call Slipknot satanic for their expression of the primal human condition. These idiots think that slipknot is satanic for being angry and for disturbing lyrics. The chorus is a direct confrontation with that. "If you're 555, then I'm 666," which means if you're truly ignorant than you just write this band up as being satanic. "what's it like to be a heretic" is the band asking these people what a heretic truly is because if you actually dissect the lyrics, there is nothing satanic about them. A lot of people who believe they are anti-christians point this song out as evidence, but this song is clearly pointing the finger at these people for their ignorance, making them look even more stupid in the process. I think this band intentionally made their lyrics to this song and many more sound almost satanic just to mess with the idiots who think they are.

Chevelle – Blank Earth Lyrics 9 years ago
Although they were signed to a religious label with their first album, they don't use religion as a tool to preach in their music, which I like. However, this song does have religious attributes and seems to be about confronting a lack of evidence towards a God. Even the title "Blank Earth" describes a time where life was never present, but there is another way to see it. Earth is another word for dirt and dirt/soil is the place that fosters growth and life, which would explain the repeated phrase in the song "where is the mother figure," which seems to ask where is this creator or where is this God.

A scratchy throat
I wish you would lift this, I drink liquids
Spreading true, I hope
A blank earth covered in nothing, living
Swear that it's something, 'cause it's here
[There is something that is keeping him from voicing his opinion, perhaps his desire to believe. He wishes his faith would be confirmed through his spreading of what he believes to be truth. There appears to be nothing, but he believes there is something]

And we feel towards a place
And many pay by ignoring
And we feel-towards a place
And many pay by ignoring
And you don't care
Where is the mother figure
[We try to find a faith or philosophy that feels comfortable, but most people ignore the thought that they could be wrong and blindly follow. These people don't care or think about the existence of this creator because they believe what others have told them.]

While I'm here
And you don't care
Where is the mother figure
While I'm here
[while he is still alive he wants to see proof of a God's existence.]

And mostly it's hard when this happens
Don't keep inside life, 'cause that's not fair
And solder won't keep me together
If heat is there, the heat is there
I can feel you breathing
And patience is slow going
I'd like to obtain this
[He's saying it's hard to believe in something that's not fair. I'm not sure about the "don't keep inside life" part, but it could be him saying not to keep people in a place of worship when there is a life to experience. If there is a God, then there is a God, but people telling him that he loves you doesn't mean that he does. The narrator doesn't appear to have much patience, but he still yearns for a paradise.]

Cause this is it made me think
Cause this is it made me think
Made me see caught this now
Caught me
[Something happened to make him really think about creation and now he seems to be trapped in the unexplainable questions of life. He is now caught in this web of what he believes and what others have told him.]

Anyway this is just my interpretation.

Chevelle – Skeptic Lyrics 9 years ago
This song uses religious language, but I don't believe this song has anything to do with religion. Pete has said in interviews that he doesn't use music as a platform to preach, which leads me to believe that this song isn't about religion. Also, this is Pete we are talking about. His lyrics are far more technical that what can be seen on the surface in every song. Sure this song appears to be religiously oriented, but that's only what's seen on the surface and there is something a lot more to this song than what a quick glance at the lyrics will give you.
That being said I have tried to decipher the lyrics, but have gotten no where. This is one of their more difficult songs to understand and a great song at that.

Slipknot – Purity Lyrics 9 years ago
The literal analysis is about a woman who is held captive in a box and allowing her to die.
However, there is a far less sinister interpretation. The box represents her captivity in a relationship where she doesn't get any emotional stability (sustenance or food in the literal translation). The relationship is suffocating her and the abusive relationship is draining away her purity. There are some lyrics to hint that she knows what she's getting into, but this person is infatuated and keeping her from having a healthy relationship with someone else.

Chevelle – Jawbreaker Lyrics 9 years ago
I agree that the song is about someone close to Pete that he hates, but I think the "ugly inner child" line is explaining that this person acts as a child and can't act like an adult about things. The title "jawbreaker" explains that this person upsets him so much that he grinds his teeth. This person always shoots Pete bad looks: "I caught your evil eye." The bad blood they have between them seems to stem from this person not siding with Pete on something: "Are you part of them, Or part of me," but either way this person is an annoyance to both parties: "Cause you bother them, And you bother me."

Chevelle – Ouija Board Lyrics 9 years ago
At first I thought this was a relationship song, but it sounds like this is more about internal conflicts.
"Self explore your egoism, Pulling out that Ouija board" could be about taking a step back and reviewing yourself and what you've become as well as looking things from the past that still haunt you.
"Right or wrong if the world explodes, Well you and I are one" is what makes me think this is about a person who has two sides to themselves. These two lines seem to mean that in the end we will die as one person. Also the lines, "Come along here's a seed of truth, 'Cause you and I are one" show that it is a singular person who is having internal conflict.
The recurring line "we're growing a fire" explains how this cognitive dissonance is creating anger and even maybe a lack of self worth. This would explain the lyrics: "You're the salt of the earth left uneasy," which basically means that what makes this person meaningful is wavering. This is also seen in "How could you show them your weakness," as he is asking himself how his confidence is disappearing.

That's just the way I saw it. Great song though!!

The Dillinger Escape Plan – Crossburner Lyrics 9 years ago
I think this is a song about a women that desires commitment and attention, but can't commit herself. The first verse seems like he's questioning if this woman is too good to be true and he finds out that she isn't truthful or committed. The chorus opener: "Turn your boat you stow away" could reference her escape plan when/if the relationship doesn't work out.
The second verse confirms her desire for commitment and attention: "You break your back for little things, Like compliments and wedding rings." And how it bothers him and her repetitive hypocrisy makes him hate her.
"I've caught you by the throat and tried to squeeze, But you weren't real" could mean that she didn't expect anything emotional or expect a two-way relationship and so even if he tried to hurt her emotionally, she wasn't all that invested and couldn't really be hurt.
"I'm sorry we're so far away" is just explaining their vast difference in personality and views of how a relationship should work.

Deftones – Battle-Axe Lyrics 9 years ago
When I hear this song I think of a couple in which the woman has been in an accident and has suffered brain damage. She thinks she's always had mental issues, but the man knows that she hasn't always been like this. He maybe even feels responsible as he "still believe[s] that the cause was always me." He also says that he wants to sleep while she is awake, possibly he feels too guilty to be around her now and doesn't want to see someone he loves devolve like this. He still loves her as he is still very proud of her, but he's holding on to hope that she might recover while she thinks she will always have issues.

Tool – Hooker with a Penis Lyrics 9 years ago
I have been told by many die hard Tool fans that this song is about Fred Durst and how he said that Tool was selling out. It would make sense because "from '92, the first EP" could reference when he began making "music" in 1992. "claimed that he was OGT" because of his terrible rap-metal style. Ironic that shitty Fred Durst would try to call out Tool for being sell outs...
