Rory Gallagher – Shadow Play Lyrics 1 year ago
As a very young man , Rory toured with bands in several European cities including Hamburg. I imagine Shadowplay refers to him walking through the entertainment district, (The Reeperbahn) and trying to make sense of the bright neon signs and shady characters. Rory never married or had children. Perhaps the seedier side of the city left him bewildered enough to write a song about it, later in life. "Stars collide" may refer to the names of Top entertainers in neon lights , blurring into each other from the streetvew of Rory walking along the pavement. The "thin beam of magic light" is a cinema.

AC/DC – The Razor's Edge Lyrics 1 year ago
Razor's edge refers to the most perilous predicament. This is the sudden poutbrek of an apocalyptic war ,WWIII. Fighting has broken out on all sides, missiles rain from the sky. You've only just managed to stay alive. Nothing is spared, even cemeteries are exploding ,raising the dead . All are shredded in mankind's last, losing roll of the dice . The song has a tone of pity and menace a last warning to those who choose war .

James – She's A Star Lyrics 2 years ago
Tim admits the song is about a woman\'s perspective as she tries to come into her own. I feel this woman is mature and has had a lifetime of duty behind her . She is trapped by her love for a man and has never been allowed to shine. She has kept her place to please others but her mind is stellar . We are invited to wear shades , so blinding is her light , never to be turned down . The song is both hauntingly sad and incredibly beautiful . The tone suggests she will not last and this blinding light will be her last as she becomes the title of the song . Not for this world and the static that surrounds she is destined to be stellar...forever!

Razorlight – America Lyrics 3 years ago
This song is about two lovers against the world. The world is symbolised by America and the world means nothing to lovers who have each other. "nothing on the tv nothing on the radio means that much to me" The lovers are however separated by circumstance and uncertainty "panic in America". As the song progresses and builds to its climax, the narrator reaches the realisation that he has lost his lover, but still begs to be held. She cannot hold him because she has become part of the world, they once faced together: "She is IN America". His doubts and fears are confirmed. "Don't stand me up, don't let me down". He has lost her. The quiet melancholic outro is his resignation to loss.
The song is not a lyrical masterpiece by any means but it is a worthy top selling single because it captures sadness, longing, panic and realisation into just 4 minutes and 10 seconds. It's like a short story of love lost over distance. It's a bit clumsy but musically I think it's beautiful in its ability to lightly, if not eloquently, convey intense emotion.

Black Sabbath – Tomorrow's Dream Lyrics 7 years ago
Sabbath had struggled to replicate the singles success of “Paranoid”. Tomorrow’s dream resurrected an identical theme of the depressive unable to find solace in his woman, preoccupied as he is with his mental condition. It is a sequel to Paranoid, now completely finished with his woman. Cursed as he is “Tomorrow’s dream” is that he can be alone with his thoughts of self destruction until he dies, finally responsible and accepting of his fate. The track position on Vol 4 is the same as Paranoid was on the second album, song length is similar but the Vol 4 doom metal riffs can no longer be described as derivative of Zeppelin’s “Communication Breakdown”. Tomorrow’s dream lacked the punch of “Supernaut” from the same album. A radio mix of the latter may well have delivered the singles success Sabbath’s management craved.

Black Sabbath – Die Young Lyrics 7 years ago
This captures resentment towards the ageing process right from the start and sends out a cautionary message about the myth of the invincibility of youth . It's a bitter warning to the young that life doesn't improve . In short that the gift of youth is wasted on then young.

Wilson Pickett – Mustang Sally Lyrics 8 years ago
Sir Mack Rice's song was about his drummer friend's desire to be bought a 1965 Mustang by Della Reece for whom he was playing. The joke was that the drummer was unambitious (flat-footed) as others in the band desired bigger and more practical cars like Cadillacs . Rice teased the drummer with a nursery rhyme: "Little Sally Walker sitting in a saucer,Ride, Sally, ride!". The song was based on the rhyme .

Kenny Rogers – The Gambler Lyrics 8 years ago
"So we took turns a-starin'
Out the window at the darkness"
When we stare into darkness through a window in a lit train we see our own reflection . The gambler was himself and the cards were life chances . The moral of the song as a parable is that we are responsible for our own choices . The conversation was an internal monologue before the man died in his sleep . It is uplifting in that he understood his life before he passed away . This was the real ace.

Nazareth – Hair of the Dog Lyrics 8 years ago
Hahaa, Hair of the dog is simply "Son of a bitch" . This term was used because the record company thought the title would be overly offensive ( despite the lyrics repeatedly stating just that .. The band compromised offering "Heir " of the Dog ie "Son of a bitch" but the record company had the final say, The song has nothing to do with a hangover . There are also no bagpipes . The effect is a "talk box" as stated elsewhere, The lyric itself is simple . A girl who comes with a reputation meets a man who won't be messed with "son of a bitch" . It's a macho Fife anthem from a place where men traditionally were hard , and worked long shifts underground in the coal mines and refused to compromise on anything when they emerged to see the light of day.

David Bowie – The Width of a Circle Lyrics 8 years ago
As per Ccorko, the liberal usage of sexual innuendo here seems to clearly point to the internal monologue describing his first Male sexual encounter. Noteworthy is the identification that the monster is himself. This refers to his libido and he enjoys the experience despite societal and legal taboos which were powerful at the time. An extremely liberating lyric for its age, this song will stand the test of time as we move towards an increasingly kinder and more permissive societal structure.

Razorlight – America Lyrics 8 years ago
America is a metaphor for power and status. The song is about doomed love between a decent poor guy who met and fell in love with someone who is attached, much higher status and ultimately unavailable.

Black Sabbath – Sabbath Bloody Sabbath Lyrics 9 years ago
The song was written in response to the widely understood miscarriage of justice following the Bloody Sunday Massacre. Geezer Butler is of Irish descent and understood the intensity of discrimination being played out before him . "War Pigs" identifies the band as anti- militaristic and this song evokes the horror of military force turned against our own people. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bloody_Sunday_(1972) . Specifically, the truth is the death of innocents , the distorted eyes are the media , "But you don't want to know" nails the apathy of those who side-lined open warfare euphemistically as someone else's "Troubles". The lies took nearly forty years to be addressed when Cameron finally apologised on behalf of the British Government . Sabbath spoke up against the lies from the start and should take credit for their principles. They were well informed but railroaded by Warner Brothers, I believe, into playing their stance down on political grounds. Incidentally the otherwise incongruous term "Bog Blast" is the voice of the People of Derry who suffered . The area the atrocity occurred in is in fact known locally as the Bogside.

Black Sabbath – Sabbath Bloody Sabbath Lyrics 9 years ago
@[bryan2071:1750] . This highly generic explanation entirely fails to explain the anger and despair that this lyrics powerfully convey. The Lawyers , Business side of events surrounding the band at time of release are however relevant. There were three changes of label at the time of the album's release, the last of which, Warner Brothers, I believe were not sympathetic to the original message of Geezer's words which lawyers believed would affect marketability. In the manner that Snowblind was about cocaine addiction. Sabbath's subject matter is principally based on real and specific events. Sabbath Bloody Sabbath is a direct reference to the Bloody Sunday Derry massacre and the whitewash the British public was subjected to in its aftermath. I'm saddened that Geezer felt pressurised to compromise his explanation at a later date when his lyrics were, I felt, always more powerful than U2's take on the same subject matter.

Black Sabbath – Symptom of the Universe Lyrics 9 years ago
The symptom of the universe is Love, in this case unrequited. The narrator is describing a dream ( reference to the Moon) in which his heartbreak is overcome and he is reunited with his heart's desire forever. The theme is that love conquers all in our dreamscapes ( Unicorns , magic ocean etc.) and that we should therefore escape to our dreams despite all their uncertainties ;including the fear of darkness ( tomb) and the comfort of sleep ( womb).

The Moody Blues – Ride My See-Saw Lyrics 9 years ago
See-saw is a play on words, an invitation to open one’s eyes to what is going on not what one saw in the past ( school , career, boredom). “Turn on tune in and drop out”. Its Timothy Leary’s mind-set put to music.
