Franz Ferdinand – Michael Lyrics 9 years ago
Franz Ferdinand admitted that the song was about one guy singing - in his head - about another guy on the dance floor. However, they stated that it isn't necessarily a "gay" song insomuch as the singer is feeling good (whether he's high or drunk or what) and sees "Michael" on the dance floor - and for that few moments he IS gay and is imagining what it would be to make out with a guy - in particular Michael who he sees as being the most handsome guy and coolest guy he's seen. So, if he were ever going to do anything with another guy it would be with Michael ("you're the only one I'd ever want").

So, don't get all homophobic about the song guys - it's a cool song - and whether we like to admit it or not - every guy has his moments when he sees another guy and wonders what it would be like.....but never acts on it.

Just enjoy it and get over yourself!

Alphaville – Big In Japan Lyrics 9 years ago
The phrase Big in Japan is not literal. It means that when you are different from the others - better looking - then you are popular: "Big in Japan"

The Zoo may well be the drug hangout referenced in another comment, but the song is not about two lovers trying to come off drugs. It's about a male prostitute who is very popular - and he's hanging out where his tricks usually pick him up.

"Pay!" Then I'll sleep by your side." He's a prostitute, he'll sleep with a man for money.

He knows what he does is not for love:

"I had no illusions
That I'd ever find a glimpse
Of summer's heatwaves in your eyes
You did what you did to me
Now it's history, I see "

The sex was "done" to him, he was not made love to. It was a trick.

The singer is not sure if he likes what he does, but it's his life.

Marion gold may have said it was about people coming off drugs in an interview in the 80's when it came out, but that is because the subject of male prostitution as a song topic would have been objectionable to most, so he put a spin on it to make it more palatable.

A-Ha – Blue Sky Lyrics 9 years ago
Blue Sky is about a guy who has broken up with his girlfriend - most likely because he thought she was not attractive enough for him - but now the Blue Sky (a-ha's turn of a phrase for "the grass is always greener on the other side") isn't so blue.

He sits at a table across from a beautiful girl, but he's too intimidated to talk to her, at the very least because he's afraid she'll think he sounds funny since he speaks with an accent.

The restaurant he's in obviously has shared tables and is typically a pick-up joint, but all he can see are gorgeous women - in his opinion too gorgeous for him to approach - so he just sits and drinks cup after cup of coffee (or something).

He's young and doesn't have much money - things that the girlfriend he dumped didn't mind - but which are things that he realizes most women are going to expect from him.

So he continues to lament that he left his girlfriend.

A-Ha – Take On Me Lyrics 9 years ago
According to a-ha, this was one of their first English lyric songs, and they were far from being fluent in English. In fact, to this day, Morten says he can speak English, but finds it difficult to accurately write in English.

I say this, because the lyrics are a bit wonky because they didn't have a good command of the English language.

"Take on me" is a direct translation from Norweigian to English and it doesn't translate well. What they mean to save is, "Give me a chance"

The song is about a guy who is nuts about a girl who is a bit indifferent toward him and he just wants her to give him a chance.

It's that simple. (P.S. - a-ha the group never really liked performing this song).

A-Ha – Butterfly, Butterfly (The Last Hurrah) Lyrics 9 years ago
While the song is definitely about their breaking the group up. Metamorphosing from a chrysalis into a butterfly is a reference to the fact that none of the three members believe they have actually been able to do what they wanted to do musically as a-ha. As they go their separate ways they'll be able to finally become "butterflies".

Additionally, there have been many disagreements and fights through the years (who wouldn't in a 25 year relationship - i'ts far longer than most marriages last). They reference these with:

"Over thinking every little thing
Acknowledge the bell you can't unring

Tomorrow, you don't have to say what you're thinking
You don't have to mean what you say "

They got tired of being careful around each other and having to watch how they talked - for a while the band members did not actually speak to each other directly, but only through their individual representatives, so toxic had their relationship become.

The last verse speaks to the fact that they have nothing more to say as a group other than this very song, "the last hurrah."

From reading much about the group, Mags and Pal were doing the heavy lifting by writing the songs and most of the lyrics, yet since the beginning, it was Morten who got all the attention - he was, after all, insanely handsome and he was the voice of the group. There was a lot of resentment toward Morten, who didn't help himself by having quite the ego.

Then there is the fact that type of music that produced hits for them was not the kind of music that Mags and Pal really wanted to write.

So, as much as I'll miss a-ha, they lasted a long time and went out on a high note.
