The line is not "Shufflin' brown tunes". When I learned to play it long long ago, I thought he said, "Shufflin' around in twos". Yesterday I watched him sing it, and he DID say, "Shufflin' around in twos!" |

This song is autobiographical, John Kay remembering his childhood escape from the communists in eastern Europe. No comments? Come on people, you're missing out on some great music! |

It's not "layatril", it's laetrile...it was thought to be a possible cure for cancer in the 1970s.
GREAT song, by the way! |

@[Ana:35845] Byrd - Good insight. The line, "It's hard to imagine that nothing at all could be so exciting, could be this much fun," points out that it IS fun. |

No comments here, either. It's sad, everyone wants to talk about "Born to be Wild" and "Magic Carpet Ride". Do you people ever listen to anything besides what you hear on the radio? Steppenwolf was a fabulous band, and they recorded some truly awesome music, way more than what you heard on top-40 radio. |

@[scottyboyd:33808] - actually, that's false. It was written by Ritchie Cordell (who also wrote "Mony Mony" and many other Tommy James songs), specifically for Tommy James and the Shondells. Tommy James recorded the vocals on Christmas Eve 1966, and it's first ever release was in 1967. |

Compare it to the lyrics to "Over the Hill" (also on this album):
"Like a cripple and his crutch, I have leaned a bit too much
On things that I should never touch again.
Now it seems it's plain to see that this stuff is killing me
Got to quit so I'll be free again." |

Love this song, but it kind of drives me crazy because it sounds like the strings are playing the major third and the minor third at the same time, in places. Does anyone else hear that? |

"Well, it mean that I need to put on his lead
If I don't want a mess on my cheap pan." -- this not only makes no sense, it's also wrong (even though all the lyric sites show it like that). It should say,
"Well, it mean that I need to put on his lead
If I don't want a mess on my G plan."
G Plan was low-budget furniture in England. See wikipedia:

@[ppan3:19202], thanks for that. I never did buy the "Jo ti mahr" line, it's just that ALL the online lyric sites say that. Yours makes better sense in many ways, plus it actually sounds like what Billy Gibbons is saying!

Ok, after a little research, I find this stuff:
In the Sikh scripture, Joti (Light) is term used to describe the Godhead, God's creation or the state of highest spiritual experience.
In Islam, a mahr (in Arabic: مهر; Persian: مهريه) is a mandatory payment, in the form of money or possessions paid or promised to pay by the groom, or by groom's father, to the bride at the time of marriage, that legally becomes her property.
Not sure if any of that is connected, but it's the best I can do. |

I think the title may come from the fact that the Reverend Willy G. is not playing his Les Paul, "Pearly Gates" on this song--sounds more like a Telecaster to me.
He doesn't play it much any more, but in the old days that guitar featured on nearly every song. |

| Rush – Tears Lyrics

@[Frank_Perk:12759] - I think another reason Rush has not been inducted is the reference to Ayn Rand on the liner notes. One cannot be in the R&R Hall of Fame if one is of a conservative bent. Same reason Jethro Tull was never inducted.
For this reason, I consider the R&R hall of fame to be irrelevant nonsense. |
