| Mumford & Sons – Ghosts That We Knew Lyrics | 9 years ago |
|
This song really speaks to me. I definitely agree with others that it is about depression, and having that person to lean on. Last June I dipped into a very frightening depression that began with me realizing how far I was from God. I hadn't really done anything to better my relationship with him for over a year, and I had lost touch with everything I'd had passion for in the past. Thankfully I went to my husband on the worst day, and not to the kitchen knives, but I was at that place. I was absolutely terrified of both life and death at the same time, and honestly just wished I could cease to exist (I firmly believed in an afterlife). Memories of what life had been like before I "fell" kept flickering in front of me, reminding me of all the things I held precious, and how much joy I'd had before I drifted away. I wanted that back but I couldn't imagine it. The only thing that held me together was the belief in miracles, actually. That was why I became a Christian in the first place, at eight years old - I wanted to see all of the amazing things that God could do - and that was what I clutched when I was scared. I was so broken, but some logical thing in me said that I could heal, and that I would receive support to keep me going. My husband and the rest of my family were with me through everything, and since then I have learned so much about grace. I was a pretty awful relation right before the depression really hit, not to mention increasingly unhealthy and increasingly obsessive. It started with a sour friendship, but honestly they were all my decisions that got me to where I went. I felt terrible about it. But instead of being condemned to misery, I learned about what "forgiveness" actually means. I had dug my own grave by getting all wrapped up in myself for a year, but the point of being forgiven is that I don't have to lie in it. And the point of being loved is that no one wants me to lie in it either. I don't really interpret this song to be about God, but this is what this song means to me. |

I guess someone got on and changed the lyrics for some reason. The lyrics to the demo of Jefferson Airplane that I have are this: These are the lyrics for Pressing On! The lyrics for the Jefferson Airplane (demo) are this: If it hurts, Kiss it better You wear skirts, I write nice letters Never said nothing with flowers Though we always talked for hours And it seems to get much colder When you cry on your own shoulder And we know the show Must go on Guess I know I guess I'll throw on Some Jefferson Airplane I'm trapped and I am enclosed But I won't complain I'll open all the windows Jefferson airplane I'm trapped and I am enclosed But I won't complain I'll open all the windows 'Cause when it's colder I feel much better When I cry on my own shoulder I'll just throw on a sweater and go And I'll go to where the weather's nice and warm And I'll go to where I am reborn And I'll go, cause in my dreams I can't complain And I'll go on my Jefferson Airplane You make the calls I'll cover my ears Niagra falls Still flows on New Year's I will save Your plunging neckline Kiss your face You try to deck mine If I behave it's going to cost him Skip the rave in downtown boston And we know the show Must go on Guess I know I guess I'll throw on Some Jefferson Airplane I'm trapped and I am enclosed But I won't complain I'll open all the windows Jefferson airplane I'm trapped and I am enclosed But I won't complain I'll open all the windows 'Cause when it's colder I feel much better When I cry on my own shoulder I'll just throw on a sweater and go And I'll go to where the weather's nice and warm And I'll go to where in a sense, I am reborn And I'll go, cause in my dreams I can't complain And I'll fly on my Jefferson Airplane Jefferson Airplane I'm trapped and I am enclosed But I won't complain I'll open all the windows Jefferson airplane I'm trapped and I am enclosed But I won't complain I'll open all the windows 'Cause when it's colder I feel much better When I cry on my own shoulder I'll just throw on a sweater and go |

| Sufjan Stevens – John My Beloved Lyrics | 10 years ago |
|
This seems to be pretty clear it is about a relationship with Jesus. This song was hard to interpret, but here are a few things I picked out. John was considered the "apostle Jesus loved", as is well known, and I won't get into that. "Are we to speak, first day of the week Stumbling words at the bar" *First day of the week is Sunday - the day everyone goes to church. It can be awkward to speak with God and you don't always know what to say. "Beloved of John, I get it all wrong I read you for some kind of poem" *Beloved OF John, probably referencing Jesus. He is saying he had read the whole story as just a pleasant sounding tale. It isn't so much that he didn't believe it, but it seemed distant, more like art than a relationship. "Covered in lines, the fossils I find Have they no life of their own?" *I'm not as sure of this one, but the worldly things that take his interest, they seem dead to him. "So can we be friends, sweetly Before the mystery ends?" *This seemed fuzzier to me, but at least one interpretation. Several times in the New Testament, it speaks of "the mystery", and here, the end of the mystery could easily be death, or kingdom come - the moment he goes to heaven. The last verse seems to be from Jesus' perspective. "If history speaks, the kiss on my cheek Where there remains but a mark" Judas' kiss on Jesus cheek "Beloved my John, so I’ll carry on Counting my cards down to one And when I am dead, come visit my bed My fossil is bright in the sun" Saying he's going to die, so come visit his grave. |

| Sufjan Stevens – All of Me Wants All of You Lyrics | 10 years ago |

Obviously I could be wrong - the first verse really makes it sound relationship-ish. But this could still be a parallel still to his mother. This third verse could easily be about birth: "On the sheet I see your horizon" Born in a hospital bed "All of me pressed onto you" Being held by mother "But in this light you look like Poseidon" Feeling small next to her, as a child to an adult "I’m just a ghost you walk right through" She left because he was so insignificant |

| Switchfoot – Beautiful Letdown Lyrics | 10 years ago |
| @[amateur1979:3204] "We are the church of the dropouts, the failures, the sinners and the fools." This is definitely a Christian song. Christianity is all about this concept - we are all broken, but God takes us in our brokenness and shows us what we are supposed to be like. With him, we can see that we don't belong in the broken world, and while it is hard to live on a different plane of thinking, it is a journey to something better. The place where we belong. And the journey is the beautiful letdown, because it isn't easy, it isn't always fun, and we are all messed up and struggling the whole way, but that's how all the most beautiful stories go. | |

The lyrics are for the wrong song. These are the Lyrics for "Letters Home", which is on the album, "The Family Tree: The Branches". "Letters Home (Aftermath)" is this: Well the men arrived as the sun began to set, And they pulled a wooden crate 'bout six feet long. I could read the news in their downcast eyes that my boy had passed away, So I stepped inside 'cause there was nothing left to say. |

| Electric President – We Were Never Built To Last Lyrics | 11 years ago |
| I think its political sort of. Like we built this nation of mindless drones and teach our children to just shut up and let the authorities do what they want. So now we're headed to some kind of apocalyptic ending and there's not really any point in trying to rescue anything that's currently here. We might as well just toss it all out, because we don't believe the corporate or political lies any more (like, no one believes commercials or politicians) and that's most of what we seem to have founded ourselves on, when it was supposed to be so different. It sounds like he wants to scrap it all and start over. | |
| Electric President – Grand Machine No. 12 Lyrics | 11 years ago |
| This just makes me think of in general, the question about what we live for. Whether its the government or just society telling you to workworkwork to get farther in life, I think he is questioning what we're working for - because while they say, "Well, money makes it easier to get what you want," we forget to pause amidst our busy day-to-day lives and figure out what that thing we want actually is, and whether money can buy it or not. | |
