The last lines of the lyric give me a different meaning. "Reach out to me" - ensure someone tells me where you are. "Call out my name" - Give them my name. "I would bring you back again today" I will bring you home to be where you were born. I will ensure you are buried where I am. The words change from bring you home to stay to something knew I will bring you back again today. |

I think all have danced around the meaning. Carole is Jewish, so it was referring to Jesus. The first part is simply about her life. The part about the man is the piece that is about the world and the man turning into a frog from bewitchment was about a person who was driven by all the wrong reasons to be wealthy and failed. The last part is the most touching to me when she talks about her tapestry (life) unraveling as all life will. The man in black is one we see throughout our life as we lose friends and love ones, but eventually the man in black (death) has come for her. It takes a beautiful mind to create a song about life that is so true. |
