@[PJSeeback:49261] Yes, I like your 'thinkings' there ;) Leonard was a very Spiritually-'Gnowing' Gentleman (he used to turn up anonymously at this 'Satsang' in the US in the 90s or naughties)... But whatever 'occurred' in that monastery for him, seem to seal his happiness and he no longer was a 'seeker' anymore, he says... But I think or feel this song is intermixed with his romantic-sexual experiences too, somehow (I don't know how - I came on here cos I am curious and love to do an impression of him singing this deep song myself!) But I think you're pretty near the mark! |

@[GiulioJulio369:49074] As he says later -on the album, -in 'Elevation', being High and Happy is Humble it does not go to my head, for I am not in ego but in essence, where there is no hierarchy of being's worth! This is the self-actualising mode :) |

@[Truthbeyou:49073] Yes, kind of agree! :) He is describing an 'epiphany' a 'break-through' -where psychological wholeness and Insight are achieved: both honesty and positivity are both strong, in a moment of self-insight about why e.g. we were angry! |

This is a self-actualisation (UK spelling :) ) moment, for me:. When I first heard this song it was in 1988, I was just 21... and I had the fortune of having the positive outcome from doing some very brave inner work (I had no choice!) and now -as then, it is clear (-to me, at least): that when one is whole (after not being...) and unrepressed and in one's centre (essence, of goodness, aliveness, intelligence and innocence) and also being honest about looking at (former/sometimes) 'destructive urges' are all explainable; we understand our own psychology! 'It seems so perfect!' Indeed...! And -i.e. There is a reason for everyone's chaos and destructive impulses.... -which does not excuse it when it is relentless; but when our awareness and empathy knows a person's biography, we understand (why they are negatively, the way they are... ) The being as a whole is seeking health, wholeness - to be free, self-aware, self-alive and happy... This is the truth that... Maslow and Carl Rogers found out: that even with their most (formerly) anti-social clients, when they were treated with patience and kindness, they started to become gentle and self-caring and were able to begin to have empathy for others in their life... and begin to make more solid, wholesome relationships This is my definite 'take' on it. Tom is no longer around in thsi world to say Yes, srpt of, or 'no'... But the track, the guitar substcnes' in the song are (also) so good! |

| Joni Mitchell – Trouble Child Lyrics | 5 years ago |
|
For me, this song is absolutely about unhappy-childhood-situations... As a young boy, I had intense self-awareness sometimes, and these lyrics articulate it SO Well indeed...!. I would be amazed if -as the rumours say - this is not about childhood... 'Knowing your attitude's all wrong and you gotta change and that's not easy' = how it feels when you're in a mood, but the parental-world kind of are giving you this message 'Dragon shining with all values known', their powerful world, with the predictable symbols that we already know that ...keeps you from your OWN... -Where is the lion in mee to DEFY them when I was so spacie and kinda 'weak' Quite understandably therefore, sense cannot really be talked to me, The peacock is afraid to parade, the pride-ful-Self . Prowess, free confidence is just absent, afraid, through shame, the message from the adults that ho-I-am is not OK... I could not give joy or love like this... They open and closed me, they certainly didn't know me though they act like they do! ANyway, this will always be an articulate poem on my experience... And 'Twisted' subsequently, is about the crazy, light whimsy of childhood! But Trouble Child is my fave also on Court + Spark |

| @[zeroninelq:22318] Byrne actually said in an interview, that he was imitating preachers - he used t go out and observe them, - & he watched them do the arm-bits, etc. - so you either also know thisfrom seeing him also -or are an incredible & intuitive genius! | |
| Talking Heads – Once In A Lifetime Lyrics | 8 years ago |
| @[AndrewVS:22317] H'mm - I strongly feel the water is positive - it reminds him of 'beingness' - which is always the 'same as it ever was'. The water is Silent, underground pure and life-giving... | |

|
@[p3nguinpi3:22316] h'mm, a good song on Acid, indeed... But i think your interpretation is quite common... The 'same-as-it-ever-was' refrain, makes me think of when we (re-)discover Happiness/Awareness/Freedom, it is always the same essence.... Here it is again, and out of time itself... I think Byrne was very into the Spiritual Truth of things... |

@[Rion:22315] yes, but the imagery of water, there stones... I agree with yuor your general comments, and I think these water images speak to our Unconscious. 'Talking Heads around then were writing of Spiritual experience -'Remain in Light' especially - and going back to remember traumatic memories - all deep & sometimes Heavy Stuff) |

| @[alfonsoo:22313] Byrne is a self-actualising creature (or was at this time - at least.. As an artist though, he will deliberately explore neurosis from this point of Strength. But what do we actually know? | |

@[incoherentlove:2756] I don't feel the song is a criticism I lay and sing it - and it is uplifting, almost divine, for me and the audience. it is sung with tenderness on regina's sublime version. Intellectually, I don;t clearly know what the song is about |

@[bookofmudora:2754] To me -and y aidience (when I play it), t is a joyous, spiritual song indeed..You are using your head to infer and project onto this song. Song meanings are felt - known essentially unconsciously more than intellectually/consciously almost always; this song brings me utter, sublime joy and spiritual upliftment when I play & sing it, and esp. when I hear Regina's version: Pure Sublime, Delicate Beauty. I FEEL it is about the union of joy, humilty and achievment |

I do not know what this is actually about, but I play it, and it has such a Gentle resonance with me. I adore playing and singing it (and am in heaven listening to Regina's original version... I feel (more than think) it is about the union of recognition - with joy and humility... I do not feel it is anti-religion at all (Regina herself is not anti religion per-se, but appreciates it- when asked n an interciew (but, obviously,, not the fundamentalist kind) |
