Journey – Send Her My Love Lyrics 10 years ago
I am intrigued by the "sad cafe" reference. The Ballad of the Sad Cafe was a novella written by Carson McCullers, published in 1951, with themes of loneliness and unrequited love. The Eagles had a beautiful song called Sad Cafe that came out about the same time as Send Her My Love; and there was a band along about this time from Great Britain called Sad Cafe.

Rod Stewart – Young Turks Lyrics 10 years ago
I can't believe no one else has already mentioned this. I think this song has to do with the fact that Rod Stewart got his girlfriend pregnant when they were teenagers and they gave the baby up for adoption. I've read that "his parents didn't want them to marry" and I've read that he "abandoned" her. Whatever the real story, I think this song is a reflection of that experience. Maybe this song is about what he wished they had done instead of letting their parents make their decisions for them.

Journey – Wheel in the Sky Lyrics 11 years ago
Steve Perry was asked in a 1999 interview what the "wheel in the sky" was. He said, "That song was written when I joined the band. I'm not really quite sure. I think it does have some spiritual connotations." The interviewer (Bob Coburn) then said that some people said it was planet earth or a cosmic mandala. Steve said, "Yeah, it is a bit of a mandala thing; that's what I was told." To hear the interview, go to youtube and search for Steve Perry Rockline Interview - Part 4.

Journey – Homemade Love Lyrics 11 years ago
Such a hot song. Brings to mind those times when you're young, just doing ordinary everyday things together with your special someone, and then it turns into something more. Yummy! And Steve makes it sound so burning hot!

Journey – When I Think Of You Lyrics 11 years ago
Steve Perry wrote this song after having a dream about his mother sometime after her death. In the dream, she was working in a gift shop, happy and smiling at him. Maybe the dream was her gift to her son and the world - the inspiration for this beautiful song. I love the inflections of his voice on the line, "It's so unreal with you gone." It shows such emotion. I think the line, "Hold on just for a while" is the feeling you get when you start waking up from a dream about a loved one you wish you could be with again; you realize you were dreaming but you just want to go back to sleep and be with them a little longer. Beautiful!

Journey – Separate Ways (Worlds Apart) Lyrics 11 years ago
Wow, such a beautiful heartfelt song! You can really feel the emotion in this one like so many of Steve Perry’s songs. He’s a vocal genius.

“Someday love will find you, break those chains that bind you. One night will remind you how we touched and went our separate ways.”

The song is a little deeper than just that he loves her but she doesn’t love him. The “binding chains” are important to the whole meaning of the song. I think that for some reason she is unable to love and he understands this but she doesn’t understand her inability to love. Due to the chains that are binding her, something in her past, perhaps a bad experience in childhood or an abusive relationship, she cannot recognize true love. He’s telling her that someday she will be able to love. He’s hoping his own love for her will break those chains, and that one night she will remember how their lives were touched by each other, she’ll regret having gone separate ways, and she’ll come back to him and be able to love him like he loves her.

When he says “true love won’t desert you” he’s telling her that when those chains are broken, he’ll be there waiting for her.

The part of the song that is just tear-jerking to me is, “If you must go, I wish you love. You’ll never walk alone. Take care, my love. Miss you, love!” It’s his parting words to her. Even though he’s tried his best to make her realize how his love is a true love, he is not confident she will ever recognize this, but he just wants her to be happy most of all. Maybe the love that finds her and breaks those chains will be someone else’s love – he’s not sure. He goes back and forth there with the two ideas – I’ll let you go – I want to keep you – I’ll let you go – I want to keep you – but he knows he’s losing her, for now anyway. Such genius, passionate lyrics!

Journey – Ask The Lonely Lyrics 11 years ago
Steve Perry said that he had a special place in his heart for this song.

I think this song is sung from the singer to a friend. He is giving his friend advice not to leave his wife/girlfriend. He's saying you should hang on to the love you have and talk things over with her. The singer has probably lost a love in the past and is now lonely and alone and he doesn't want the same fate for his friend.

“You've been thinking it's over. What's that chip on your shoulder?”
(He thinks his friend wants to part with his girlfriend because he can’t forgive her for something or maybe he’s judged her unfairly.)

“Outside were solid rainbows. Inside is where the heart grows.”
(He's telling his friend that he seemed happy with this girl and love is surely there down deep inside.)

“Picking up the pieces: something more to believe in..”
(He's saying that when a couple goes through some bad times and works them out, they are stronger afterwards.)

“As you search the embers, think what you had; remember.”
(He's giving him advice to think about the love they shared as he tries to see if anything in this relationship is salvageable.)

“Hang on. No, don't let go now. You know, with every heartbeat we love. Nothing comes easy. Hang on. Ask the lonely.”
(He’s telling him that relationships require perseverance, work and understanding and that once you love someone you will always love. Don’t break up with her or you will be alone and lonely like I am. Ask me how I feel about losing my love because of my own resistance to accept her faults.)

“You've got some fascination with your high expectations.”
(He tells his friend that he is expecting too much of his girlfriend. No one’s perfect. Be more understanding; be forgiving.)

“This love is your obsession; your heart, your prized possession.”
(He thinks that his friend actually loves the girl but he is unwilling to really give himself to her.)

“Let down your defenses. Open up to the one who cares.”
(He’s giving his friend advice to open up to his girlfriend and learn to love and be loved.)

“When you’re feeling love’s unfair, you just ask the lonely.
When you’re lost in deep despair, you just ask the lonely.”
(Again, he’s telling his friend that he is going to lose the best thing that ever happened to him if he doesn’t watch out. He knows, because it happened to him and now he’s alone and lonely.)
