| And of course that loads of money does not really make anyone genuinely happy. Happiness comes from other more substantial things in life! | |

I get the "core" message of this fantastic song, which is: "So don't tell me about your success Nor your recipes for my happiness Smoke in bed I never could digest Those illusions you claim to have going" The idea of following the rich people's advice on how to be successful and happy like them is a liberal hoax, an illusion. "The poor create the rich hoax And only late breast-fed fools believe it" The rich did not create their own happiness and can take no credit for it or give any advice what so ever, becaus the poor created their wealth and happiness by their work or, and/or by getting a cold hand from society (tax cuts for the rich, privatisations and downsizing of the public sector). The poor pay the price of misery for the propriety of the rich. The American dream is but a dream. How can anyone NOT see that it's an illusion that if you work hard enough, follow the advice, you'll be like them? "The sun is shining, as it's always done Coffin dust is the fate of everyone" We're all just human beings, and no material or symbolic wealth can change that when we die. The moon hangs in a purple sky, the sun shines like it's always done – these elements give a feeling of eternity, the things that we're equal under. It's our soeciety that makes us unequal. Some parts are a bit unclear and more difficult to interpret: "Rich folks have the same jokes And they park in basic places" Could this mean: Rich folks may live fancy lives and have fancy cars, but they still have to park their cars like everyone else? At the end of the day it's just a transportation, and we're all humans, it's whent he rich have to park their cars and do other basic things that this fact is exposed? The jokes could mean the same thing; the rich joke just like everyone else once in a while. But a more interesting interpretation would be that they [the rich] "have jokes" that they spread to "young folks" (every new generation of all classes, races etc.) who "share the same jokes", created by the rich, i.e. the illussions, the big hoax. The young come as "new fresh" humans to the world, apparently with freedom of choice and responsible for their own success. But the world they're in, and the places where they were born and where they live are not like a blank paper full of free opportunities for the individual. They come to a pre-fabricated world order and a class society, and they meet each other in "older places" affected by what's pre-fabricated. Other interpretations? Anyone? |

| Yeah, and don't forget that a sperm is a human life too! Men are aborting human life everyday all around the world, spilling these billions of mini persons on tissue and flushing them down the toilet. This communist madness must come to an end! This King Crimson foresaw... | |

I found myself listening to this and scribbling down my spontaneous thoughts without contextualising them to the Cold war era, but rather to the Post Cold War era which we all know that the West/Capitalism won. It's a general yet personal interpretation (strongly coloured by my political values and beliefs and probably quite far from the original intention, no one has to agree with me). Here it goes: The wall on which the prophets wrote Is cracking at the seams. [The narrative/ideology written/created by those with power (leaders, everything from kings to corporate MDs and politicians) to legitimize the present system, is full of cracks; the way this system is presented has flaws and inconsistencies. Perhaps its losing its legitimacy.] Upon the instruments of death The sunlight brightly gleams. [Sunlight (=historical progress that make things change) shows the "instruments of death" clearly, i.e. makes power visible for everyone to see (but why won't they see it? because of ideology/"false consciousness"))] When every man is torn apart With nightmares and with dreams, [The incongruence between nightmares (the dull and physically or mentally painful reality in capitalism) and dreams (what people really want, how they would really like things to be) is tearing men apart; this "reality" is slowly torturing us in various ways] Will no one lay the laurel wreath When silence drowns the screams. [The obsolete system and order, where our masters set the rules (see below) will not end itself. What's wrong must be articulated, pointed out, protested against. People are suffering and screaming, but only inwards. They need to turn their frustration outwards and realise they're not alone about feeling like this, i.e. turn away from individualism.] Between the iron gates of fate, The seeds of time were sown, [Iron gates=hard to move; smt forced upon smt, smt hard to change or seemingly definite. This is how things are, its "fate", it can't be changed, i.e. there are no alternatives to capitalism. Seeds of time=history, what's real, praxis, man's work; man's way of affecting the course of events, nature, history, life.] And watered by the deeds of those Who know and who are known; [Those="heroes", leaders, masters, from kings to risk capitalists. They are considered to possess natural gifts, special knowledge, are famous and admired. Within this system, they seem to decide the course of history.] Knowledge is a deadly friend When no one sets the rules. [Instrumental reason/knowledge, where anything that is More Efficient automatically is considered better, and where quantity counts but not quality, is dangerous. For example: the most efficient way to increase GDP is polluting our environment, but GDP seems natural and good in itself. Making economy independent of human action and good philosophical-political principles is dangerous.] The fate of all mankind I see Is in the hands of fools. [The future of mankind is considered to be smt outside our power, but it in reality it is smt in the hands of those with power, i.e. capitalists and politicians.] Confusion will be my epitaph. As I crawl a cracked and broken path If we make it we can all sit back And laugh. [Thinking about this is confusing and unsettling. It doesn't really make life easier here and now compared to drifting along and adapting, not thinking about it or complicating the state of things. But if we do think these thoughts and act for change, and if it would Lead to change, it would be worth the pain that got us there.] But I fear tomorrow I'll be crying, Yes I fear tomorrow I'll be crying. [Although I fear that we won't reach there…] |
