This song is about addiction, not about taking drugs. "Know me, broken by my master." That says it all. Taking drugs and addiction are two things that can definitely be mutually exclusive. Layne Staley did not write the lyrics, Alice in Chains recorded it as a cover. However, Staley certainly knew addiction as his cover of the song makes explicit. There is no arguing with the emotional intensity or honesty of his interpretation. I view Staley's cover of "Would" the same way I view Jimmy Hendrix's cover of "All Along the Watchtower"--Dylan wrote the words, but Jimmy owned the song. |
