Actually, I think it's less about criticism from Americans wanting them to drop their accent (they never did sell or perform much here). They get a lot more crap from English people over their accent. "Your Saxon ears" clearly refers to the Saxons (like in the term Anglo-Saxon), ancestors of much of the modern southern English people. Scotland and England have a long and contentious history and the Proclaimers have advocated for Scottish independence for a while now. They have another song called "Cap in Hand" which speaks directly to their resentment of English rule over Scotland. |
