The Doors – Riders On The Storm Lyrics 12 years ago
I’ll just comment on the first verse now. My take is that although many people seem to adapt perfectly to this world system, other people are very sensitive, feeling more that after birth, they have been “thrown” rather than just “born” into this stormy world. Young children do SEE the disasters and injustices in the world around them. Many parents aren’t forthright with their children about the cold hard facts, but fluff over the true facts with “white lies,” thinking they are protecting their children. Most children accept the “fluff.” Many parents even teach their children that appearances are of upmost importance in order to be accepted by society. Inadvertently they teach their children to act, lie and pretend so they will be looked upon and be accepted by society, rather than teaching their children to just be their own genuine self. Some children see through the “big lie” and refuse to conform. When they don’t conform they are alienated from society and feel lost and alone, like “a dog without a bone and an actor out alone.” That is why many people accused Jim Morrison of being a rebel. He just refused to conform to the “big lie,” and remained true to himself. Tragically, it remains the same, even for parents who teach and encourage their children to be true to themselves. They too are often rejected by society. It’s very sad….something Shakespeare seemed to grasp so very well.

Peggy Lee – Is That All There Is? Lyrics 12 years ago
I like your comment, but it seems she never had optimism, even when she was a young child. I think if she HAD seen a ghost, she might have said:
"And when I was 15 years old, I saw a ghost at the end of our hallway,
The scariest thing most people fear in the their lives;
I just stood there and watched as the ghost approached and walked right through me;
As it passed on through, it’s coldness me gave me a quiver, but then it was gone,
And I said to myself, ‘is that all there is to a ghost?’
Is that all there is all? is that all there is? …….......” lol

Winter Gloves – Trap the Mouse Lyrics 12 years ago
This poor guy is assaulted by sexual abuse which haunts him during wake, night and in his dreams. Even during sleep, he never knows when those dark "shadows of abuse" would creep in, whether in reality or bad dreams. The song seems to reveal his dark thoughts during a time he feels the only way out is to kill the self-absorbed abuser with a cleverly devised plan to turn the tables on and to trap "the mouse" in order to ensnare and kill his “abuser.” He seems conflicted whether to make himself follow through with his plan to kill/stop the abuser, or else just somehow keep living and learning with how to deal with it. He knows the life of the abuser’s live is in his hands, and it’s now or never.

The Zombies – She's Not There Lyrics 12 years ago
Edulondon...I think you are exactly right. The singer/writer describes the way "she looked and acted" on the outside. Then he immediately gave the warning about her true, inward nature, "but she's not there." He found out that she was empty, a liar and a user. Unlike his friends, he was warning everybody about her.

Maybe he is saying, "The way she'd accent the color or her hair."

The Zombies – She's Not There Lyrics 12 years ago
I'm not saying that murder isn't the meaning of this song, but I think this song shouldn't be attributed to murder simply because some lyrics are used in a past tense and other's are used in the present tense. To me this seems to be about a guy both blaming and warning people about this woman. He blames friends and people who had known this woman, but who didn’t warn him about her true nature: that she "was" a liar, and that she had used and hurt people (past tense on his friends’ parts). The narrator had to find that out by himself. He was upset with them because he believed they “knew,” but hadn’t pre-warned him. On the other hand, the narrator had no problem with warning other people about her. Often when we speak of our ex-lovers, we use the past-tense in describing the “good” traits that made us fall for the person, (“Yes, he “was” very sensitive and attentive.”) But when it comes to warning them about the ex-lover’s inner-core, negative traits, we often use the present tense, because we believe those traits will be ongoing. (“He “is” shallow, and a cheater.”) The singer, unlike his friends, is warning others of this woman. He used the past tense when describing her beauty or charm that he fell for; but then he changed to present tense as he warns others that, “she’s not there.” That phrase, “she’s not there,” holds a lot of information about the woman, along with the fact she had lied and hurt people. She was empty inside and not really “there” for him, nor for anybody in the past, and he is warning that she will never be “there “for anybody in a meaningful, love- relationship. So they may as well never expect that from her, even if they fall for her beauty and charm in the beginning. – Hey just another theory and perspective to think about anyway.
