| I always thought this song was about a child conceived through rape. The kicked in door, the faceless, nameless father. It seems like it would have been in a time or place that a "bastard child" would cause a huge social stigma on both the mother and child. It seems like the chorus would be the rest of the family and community who didn't understand, or even blamed the woman. The supportive verses would be the ones who saw it as the crime it is and not her fault or the child's, and tried to help them, and help the child make sense of it as he/she grew older. | |

I really think the lyrics are off, unless they're from the CD liner.... In the first verse, it really sounds to me that he says "oh, carolina, something's wrong you've lost the wind in your sails and now you thought to hail land and you pray the ground will not fail" Instead of "and now you float to a land" Which would make more nautical sense. You hail the harbor when you come to it. The last verse has always sounded like "you face the mirror on the wall you hold a knife to your hair you fill the sink with your curls for the life you spent" Which makes a lot more sense than "for the life you a have spread" Cutting hair has always been symbolic, of change, of mourning. Cutting her hair, for the life she has spent just makes sense there, especially in a song about retrospective thinking, regret and hope. |

| To me, it sounds like a conversation with himself about what he did wrong. Had he known how to save a life, he wouldn't have been so rigid in his thinking, so sure he was right. When you are trying to reach someone who's in pain, you have to go to them, not make them be what you want and act how you want. But, he didn't know how, not then. It took losing them to make him realize that making someone confess and conform is a sure way to lose them. | |
