This song is a defiantly energetic shout into the void. Favorite song on the album.

Andrew Bird – Banking on a Myth Lyrics 11 years ago
I think of this song as being about how people in power to some extent have control over art and how it's made to appeal to as many people as possible instead of being meaningful.

MGMT – Time to Pretend Lyrics 11 years ago
It's describing both the normal life and the life of a famous person as unsatisfying and the latter as self-destructive.

Okkervil River – Pop Lie Lyrics 11 years ago
In the first verse, Sheff describes a singer who cynically manipulates his fans to make money.
"A falling star wished upon
And flashed in the sky and was gone"
This brings to mind the metaphor in song about a star, which really would be a whole 'nother one of these.
"Who had dreamed up the dream that they rest their hearts upon"
But the thing is that the singer has genuinely helped the fans, or at least that's what it seems like. The dream of the singer is better than the reality.
"The liar who lied in his pop song
And you're lying when you sing along"
There might be some ethical issues in supporting this singer.
"But at the food court, the float's inflated"
The singer's celebrity is comparable to a float. It's completely hollow.

"And we're feeling alright, though we know it's all wrong"
On some level we do realize that it is all based on lies, but we choose to ignore it.
"I'm ashamed to admit that I can't help resist what I wished was the truth, but it's not"
He too wishes that it could be real, but he knows that it isn't.

"And I truly believe we're not strong
And we'll sing til our voices are gone"

So despite all of this we continue to listen to the singer's music, because on some level we do need it, or at least we want it enough that we're willing to put aside our ethics.
"This is respectfully dedicated
To the woman who concentrated
All of her love to find
That she'd wasted it on
The liar who lied in this song"
The love of celebrities is a trap, and Sheff feels sympathy for its victims. We shouldn't dismiss them as delusional fangirls, because the celebrities are the real manipulators.

This song really applies to my life right now in light of the rape allegations leveled at Conor Oberst.

As people get older they lose their idealism and their individuality.

Okkervil River – Where the Spirit Left Us Lyrics 12 years ago
I think this song is about Will Sheff looking back on his younger self and thinking about how emotional he was and how he did things that would seem embarrassing but instead of feeling ashamed about it he praises his younger self for being so alive.

Okkervil River – Black Nemo Lyrics 12 years ago
It makes me think of the inevitability of the passage of time, and how everything eventually ends.
