I love this song, but should it be 'one little diamond'? Most engagement rings are solitaires, aren't they?

Neil Diamond – I Am... I Said Lyrics 12 years ago
I would separate the inspiration for the song from it's meaning. It may have been inspired from a failed audition, but the song is about much more than that. That was merely a catalyst for the wave of lonely emotion that hit him.

In the song he is so overwhelmed by his aloneness, that he feels he is losing himself in it, like drowning.

He responds by crying out, "I AM!" meaning: I live, I exist, I'm here. But there is nobody there to express this to.

I think the chair metaphor is probably the most powerful line in the song. Surely nothing evokes loneliness more than an empty chair. Think about when someone is absent, or dies. How painful is it to see 'their empty chair'?

In the song he is desperate to connect with someone, but there is nobody there. Again he cries out, "I am!" He looks to see who heard his cry, and catches sight of that chair. It is the closest thing around him to represent another human being, but he also realises the chair is just pieces of lifeless wood. So even that can't hear him.

Ultimately, although this song is full of sadness, I see it as a positive lyric, because it's theme is "I am!" In spite of everything, he is fighting to continue, to be and to exist. His is down, but his lifeforce is still there within him. He will come through this and survive it.

Simon and Garfunkel – I Am A Rock Lyrics 12 years ago
To me this is someone trying, and failing, to convince himself that he is happier without love than with it. However, he also knows that he is speaking BS.

"Hiding in my womb, safe within my tomb". He has 'built walls' and made a prison for himself to protect him from pain, but those walls cause him pain because they also 'protect' him from happiness.

The lyrics mean the opposite of what they actually say.

It's like the 10cc song, "I'm not in love" where deep down the speaker knows he is lying. This song is the same.

It all leads to the powerful ending, "and a rock feels no pain, and an island never cries." This is the culmination of his self-deception because clearly he is no rock. He is in deep pain, and, at least on the inside, is sobbing his heart out.

Simon and Garfunkel – Flowers Never Bend With The Rainfall Lyrics 12 years ago
My first post - please be gentle with me :)

I see this song as being about acceptance. The two key lines are the title, with it's lead in: "I'll pretend that flowers never bend with the rainfall". Also "And I must be what I must be."

So, it is a pretence to think that flowers do not bend with the rainfall. And a pretence to think that life does not change us. We bend to life's rainfall, or we break.

The write is confused about what is real and not, what is right and not, even what is important or not. But he accepts the confusion as part of the human condition and will move forward in that confusion, knowing that the confusion is a part of him too.
