Twenty One Pilots – Lane Boy Lyrics 7 years ago
Alright folks, time to analyze my favorite song ever! All of Twenty One Pilots' songs are not only catchy, but extremely thoughtful. None of the songs are what they appear to be... this being said, Lane Boy is certainly not about a dude driving a car.

This song, my friends, is a middle finger to the haters who think that TOP is a band who is too musically scattered to survive in the music industry. Tyler knows that music is music, and heck, he can do what he wants! HE is the artist; whether he writes pop, rap, alternative, techno, etc., each piece of music he writes stands for itself and should not be pushed towards a "category" like some other generic songs and albums out there. TOP is a band of variation, not a band that fits into one single category! Hurrah! Now, let's get into the nitty gritty... how did I come to this conclusion?

Tyler kicks off the song with these lyrics:
"They say, 'Stay in your lane, boy, lane, boy'/ But we go where we want to"
Despite people telling him to stick to one genre of music, Tyler is a strong, independent singer-songwriter who does what he wants!

"They think this thing is a highway, highway/But will they be alive tomorrow?"
The younger generation is the next generation. Hence, the younger folks of society have the responsibility of shaping the future. Maybe not sticking to a genre will be a thing in the future? For now, Tyler does what he wants, despite old stuffy people telling him what he should and shouldn't do.

"They think this thing is a highway/If it was our way, we'd have a tempo change every other time change"
Highways are straight. Long. Fast. There are no curves, no hills, usually nothing to see on the sides of the roads. There are a lot of them. But you know what? TOP will not drive on the boring highway of the music industry! If it were his way, he would change the tempo a bunch of times! However, if you randomly slow down and then speed up on a highway, you might crash because that could be dangerous with a bunch of other cars around you. This instance translates to one in the music industry: if you make your songs super weird, then no one will probably listen to them because they're hard to follow. Tyler negotiates for catchy songs, but catchy songs that have nothing to do with each other. He needs to spice up his job somehow, right? Who wants to write the same kind of song all of the time?!

"'Cause our mind's changed on what we think is good"
Young people like Tyler appreciate different songs than adults do. So, how can anyone expect him to listen to these tasteless adults?

"I wasn't raised in the hood/But I know a thing or two about pain and darkness/If it wasn't for this music I don’t know how I would have fought this"
Tyler raps in his songs. However, he's not some ghetto gangster from the slums who raps about the pain and suffering of the hood. People sometimes criticize him for being a normal dude who raps. They think he's too innocent to enter the rap community. But you know what? That's rude because he still knows about pain and darkness, just from different experiences. He uses his music as a form of catharsis for said pain and darkness.

"Regardless, all these songs I'm hearing are so heartless/Don't trust a perfect person and don't trust a song that’s flawless, honest"
Tyler is disappointed by the lame pop songs he hears on the radio. They're pretty dang boring in that there's no meaning to them. If there is meaning, it's surface-level. He wants songs that he can analyze, songs that are food for thought, songs that convey a deeper message. By "perfect person," Tyler means someone who seems like (s)he's never encountered something horrifying in his/her life. "Perfect" people can't write deep, meaningful songs because they haven't learned much about the dark side of the moon. A "song that's flawless" seems all jolly and dandy, but is it honest? Is it a realistic song? Probably not, according to Tyler.

"There's a few songs on this record that feel common/I'm in constant confrontation with what I want and what is poppin'/In the industry..."
Oh no, Tyler is beginning to fall into the trap! A few songs in Blurryface, his latest album, appear to him to be similar. If it were up to Tyler, all of his songs would be different. Tyler knows that he has to stick to some kind of agenda, though, so he submits to distant similarity to maintain an audience. Being a singer-songwriter means the constant battle between writing what you want and writing what your audience wants. Tyler is basically just discussing this concept.

"...it seems to me that singles on the radio are currency/My creativity's only free when I'm playing shows"
Tyler gets money and fame when his singles make it to the radio. Radio tunes are always the exact same every time they are played. On the contrary, Tyler also makes money from performing in concerts, but it's a lot more fun for him to perform live so he can change his songs up a bit. He can have Josh do a backflip, he can take a picture of a fly on his piano, he can run on top of the crowd in a hamster ball. It's a good time.

"I'm sorry if that question I asked last"
(psst the question is "will they be alive tomorrow"?)

"Scared you a bit like a Hazmat, in a gas mask..."
This question scares some people like a hazardous material wearing a gas mask. This part is kind of jumbled; Tyler just wants cool fast lyrics to show that he can rap.

"...if you ask Zack/He's my brother, he likes when I rap fast"
Proof of previous statement.

"But let's backtrack/Back to this"
Reigning in the one-way convo here...

"Who would you live and die for on that list?"
AKA, which old people do you love?

"But the problem is, there's another list that exists/And no one really wants to think about this"
After we all die, there's a naughty list and a nice list. People go to Heaven, and people go to the place with the fire and the pitchforks. We never want to think about the latter.

"Forget sanity, forget salary, forget vanity, my morality/If you get in between someone I love and me/You're gonna feel the heat of my cavalry"
Ty values loved ones above materialism and above himself. If you touch the people he loves, he will freaking send his army after you.

The chorus repeats a few more times, so if you want to read their analyses, feel free to scroll up and reread them.

So yeah, that's that! Tyler the musical rebel absolutely refuses to stay in his musical lane. This song is pretty much a YOLO statement (;

If you actually read this entire thing, you're an absolutely awesome person. Please let me know if you agree/disagree! Thanks for reading and have a wonderful day! :) :) :)

A Great Big World – Say Something Lyrics 10 years ago
I think the lesson learned here is that you should share your emotions with the ones you love before it's too late. If you watch the music video, you will realize that the song follows three main characters: a 35ish-year-old woman, an elderly man, and a 6 or 7 ish year old girl. All three of them share the fear and pain of neglect and abandonment: not only physically, but emotionally as well.

The story begins with a woman in bed with a man, who is inferred to be either her husband or her boyfriend. He is fast asleep while she is left awake in bed, probably unable to fall asleep because too many thoughts are racing through her head. And most of those thoughts are probably worries regarding their relationship, things like whether he loves her or not, whether she should leave him, and the dangers of exposure and loneliness that would result from doing so. She cries about it throughout the video, and gradually, after shedding more tears than necessary, decides to leave him because he still did not wake up after such a long time. If he really cared, he would have woken up. Right?

But here's the catch: little did the woman know, the moment she stepped out of bed, the man awoke with a start. There is a pained and abandoned look in his eyes, as if she had broken his heart. Who is to say that he never loved her in the first place? Maybe he is just shy and self-conscious. Maybe he was afraid to take the next step in their relationship. Maybe he feels the same way about her: that she doesn't love him either. But she never would have known because she automatically assumed that, because he didn't comfort her in her tears, he didn't love her. If she would have woken him up, maybe he would have embraced her and told her that he loves her. The possibilities are endless, but all the woman had to do to make things better was ask.

This entire story, I think, is a social media revolution. The woman could have asked, but she was afraid. The man could have comforted her, but he was distracted by sleep and unaware of the woman's apparent suffering. Social media kind of contributes to this a lot...and I don't know where else I'm going with this but social media seems to have been taking the social aspects from people and making them shy and socially unapproachable. Does anyone else agree with this? If so, please help me explain this because I have ideas but I can't seem to be able to form them into words. Thanks!

Now, onto the girl. The second main character introduced in the video is a young girl awake in bed. She is alone with her teddy bear, and there is a brief view of her parents fighting. She is introduced when Christina Aguilera sings "I am feeling so small," and she just so happens to be small. She hides under the covers and eventually takes her teddy bear with her to hide under the bed, where a lonely-looking dog is waiting for her. There she waits until, later on, a woman with orange nail polish reaches for her hand, which she takes. So what does all of this mean?

The little girl feels abandoned by her parents. Her parents might not have known that their daughter had been viewing their arguments, so she wanted to disappear and pursued comfort from her dog. The only one left. If only the parents had taken consideration and cared about her daughter. If they had, much of her sadness and loneliness would have been spared. The parents obviously love her daughter (like all parents), but she would never know it because they are not displaying their love for her in any way. Instead, it got to the point where a stranger rescued her.

But here's the thing: the stranger was the one to rescue her out of her kind, goodhearted nature. One small gesture from a stranger was enough to bring this little girl out from under her shell. You never know...it's the little things that count.

Last but not least, we have the main focus of the story: the elderly couple. Well, at least they were a couple. Now it's an elderly man mourning his dead wife. It all begins when he finds his unconscious wife in a hospital bed. He strokes her face, lies down with her, cries next to her, kisses her, and finally blows her a kiss as he "says goodbye." And yes, I just about bursted into tears during that close-up of him cradling her face and breaking down into tears. That seriously broke my heart.

The point here is that the man did not expect his wife's death. He never got to say goodbye. Her death broke his heart much more than it broke ours. I just hope that he expressed his love towards her previous to the unexpected ending of her life. I hope that she knew that he loved her before she died and vice-versa. This is another reason we should convey our emotions towards the ones we love; we never know how much longer they have left.

So, bottom line, it's the little things that count. If you love someone, let them know before it's too late (and no, don't tell 'em you love 'em by lettin' 'em go!). The same goes for friendship. Encouragement is key and it can really make someone's day. Even something as simple as smiling to a stranger can make someone's day. It makes them feel like someone actually does care. You can make a difference. But the real question is simply this: will you?

Thanks for reading, I hope this didn't bore you to tears! XD Any feedback would be great, I would love to hear what you have to say. And I apologize for my awful grammar. Thanks!!

fun. – Some Nights Lyrics 10 years ago
This song depicts a man's sadness in life. He has based his life on his old spouse and, now that she has left him, he has nothing to live for.

He says "I still wake up, I still see your ghost," which I would interpret to see his ex-love's ghost. "I'm still not sure what I stand for," well, he isn't sure why he is even on Earth in the first place.

The singer discusses how he is an underdog in life and the shallow people around him constantly bring him down. He says, "I was never one to believe the hype/ save that for the black and white/I try twice as hard and I'm half as liked/ But here they come again to jack my style." He never believed the hype, meaning that he never really followed the trends or anything that was popular. He believes that only shallow people (black and white, meaning there is always a clear-cut answer. In this case, the people divide "cool" from "not cool") who judge people on their looks should get into the trends. Although the singer tries hard to be liked, no one really likes him. He finds it unfair that others are in the opposite situation. In fact, shallow people ruin his life because they always bring him down for his unique ways that don't necessarily blend in with everyone else.

But "that's alright/ I found a martyr in my bed tonight/ She stops my bones from wondering just who I am." During this breakthrough, the singer has finally found a spouse who cares for him for his true colors and his natural personality. She makes him feel like he is important and means something in life. Sweet, right? Nope! He goes on to say that he "could use some friends for a change" and "some nights I'm scared you'll forget me again." Keyword: again. This leaves a mystery..are they back together or does he want her to be his girlfriend again?

Then he goes into this deep apology to his family. The singer left his family for a girl that left him, so basically he is left with nothing. Yup, that's a lot of leaving for one sentence. "So this is it. I sold my soul for this?/ Washed my hands of that for this?/I miss my mom and dad for this?" The singer thought he was getting a good deal. If he left his family, he would get a girl that loves him and cares for him. He thought it sounded like a good life, but never thought ahead. Now that the girl is gone, the singer comes crawling back to his old life as a kid, wishing that he never had to grow up and feel the pain of life.

The singer tries to seek guidance: "When I see stars...that's all they are." The singer looks up to the stars for guidance (which is what stars symbolize) but they really don't help at all. This could be a metaphor to his life; he tried looking to people for advice but they don't help. Even though people seem like they are something, they really could be much more different than you think. He says, "When I hear songs, they sound like this one," meaning simply that the media isn't helping his self image either. Everyone sings and writes and talks and posts about tragedies and the negative parts of life. Why can't we just focus in on the positive part of life for the sake of..well...everyone?

He reiterates how much he hates life: "Ten years of this, I'm not sure if anybody understands." Yeah..you probably get it by now. This song is a way to get the singer's feelings out about the world.

He kind of has a little bit of hope, though, even though it comes with some helplessness and longing. He makes a reference to his sister's successful life. She is married with a kid. Their situation reminds him how good life can be if you live it right. "My heart is breaking for my sister and the one that she call "love"/ when I look into my nephew's eyes.../ Man, you wouldn't believe the most amazing things that can come from.../Some terrible nights." His sister and her son inspire the singer and serve as a wake-up call to remind him that, if he wants to live a good life, he should stop having pity-parties all of the time and go do something for once.

Then the guy moans in sadness and longing. A lot. But it's catchy, so we can let it slide: "Oh, whoa, oh, whoa, oh, whoa, oh, oh,
Oh, whoa, oh, whoa, oh, whoa, oh, oh."

The song ends with a pointless message to the singer's ex-love: "The other night you wouldn't believe the dream I just had about you and me/I called you up but we'd both agree." Okay, this is understandable. Even though the girl left him in the dust, he wants to ask her for a second chance. But THEN:
"It's for the best you didn't listen
It's for the best we get our distance... Oh...
It's for the best you didn't listen
It's for the best we get our distance... Oh... "

Okay dude, what the heck? Do you like her or not? Make up your mind..you already sound desperate and indecisive so she's NOT going to take you back if you do that. But then again, a common theme seems to be "I want to be myself." Okay, so now it's up to you. If you actually took the time to read my review, I would LOVE to know what you think and would really appreciate any feedback. Thanks so much!

Olly Murs – Troublemaker Lyrics 10 years ago
In a nutshell, the person singing falls in love with a troublemaker! (who would have guessed, right?) He likes the girl even though he knows she will get her into trouble if they start dating. In a strange way, the singer is attracted to the rebelliousness of the girl, so it becomes even harder for him to ignore her.

Imagine Dragons – Demons Lyrics 10 years ago
I have interpreted that the song reveals a true key to living a happy life: everyone has flaws and we have to accept it.

In the beginning, it mentions that "the saints we see are all made of gold." To me, this says that people who we think are perfect (or close to perfect) have a greedy side too (because they are metaphorically made of gold). It is also possible that the song may mean that something is causing the person to be nice that most people may be disappointed in. For example, if a teenager's parents pay them to be nice, are they really nice?

Later, it states that our role models are the worst ones to follow: "When your dreams all fail and the ones we hail are the worst of all." This line simply says that idols are dangerous. If you really look up to someone who has flaws (because everyone has flaws), you will eventually, whether you know it or not, take on those flaws in an effort to be like that person. It's sad but true. It has also given me second thoughts about role models.

Later on, it says, "I wanna hide the truth/I wanna shelter you/But with the beast inside/There’s nowhere we can hide." Basically, the person singing the song wants to help the one they love, but end up confessing that there's nothing they can do to shelter them from the cruel and unforgiving world. The singer knows that, although they try to be as good of a human as they can, there is no way to stop the sin that is waiting to emerge from inside. The singer could try to protect them from the world, but it would be pointless because the flaws would emerge on the person they were trying to protect. This is also sad but true, but reenforces the idea of the song interpreting that no one is perfect.

Thus, the chorus to the song:
"When you feel my heat
Look into my eyes
It’s where my demons hide
It’s where my demons hide
Don’t get too close
It’s dark inside
It’s where my demons hide
It’s where my demons hide"

Of course, the author does not actually mean that they have physical demons inside of them, but demons are a reference to the sin and flaws that rest within. The rest is pretty much self explanatory:)

The rest of the song goes on to support the "thesis" more if you take the time to read into it.

Overall, the singer loves the person they are singing to, the intended audience. He wants to protect the intended audience from the darkness of the world, but it comes out as warning of the lingering dangers because he can not do anything to prevent his inner "demons" from hurting them.

If you ask me, this is a pretty depressing song. It is also and eye opener to see that other people actually notice that this world has become crueler over the years.

If you were to take away one thing from reading this (if you actually did read this!), then I would like you to know this: Nobody's Perfect. But, more importantly, the reason Imagine Dragons even decided to write this song in the first place is because Hannah Montana failed to get that point across while people actually liked her. Just kidding! Kind of...

Well, anyway, thanks for reading!

PS-This is my first review, so I would really appreciate any feedback given. I'm super new to this, so I have no idea if I'm doing this right. Oh well! Thanks!
