A Fine Frenzy – Sadseasong Lyrics 9 years ago
heart breaking song about a break up. i like how she uses the image of the sea to talk about life and love and how we don't have much control over any of it.

this song just sounds like conor went to a protest. and in a way it gives him hope to see that some people still care and are still willing to fight for something.

@[daystoforget:2649] no. she simply means that she sees people and places that remind her of her home and of her friends. she lives somewhere new and everything is almost the same there, except it isn,t her home and she doesn't know anyone. sounds like she was trying to get away from a break up, but she's still in love with the guy that left her.

Angus and Julia Stone – I'm Not Yours Lyrics 9 years ago
I think she has this intense twisted relationship with this guy and they love and hate each other at the same time. And he is always leaving her behind. I think the ''I'm not yours anymore'' is merely a protest.

it's sad to hope for something and to be left with nothing in the end. how is that not sad? i'd choose lies over truth anytime.

Leonard Cohen – The Stranger Song Lyrics 10 years ago
I always felt like the part where he says ''it's you my love, who are the stranger'' means that maybe she was wrong all along in her perception of things. while she thought all the other men were letting her down, it was actually only her that was uable to love. and now that he is there and says he really wants her she has nothing to hide behind and she has to realize that she is the stranger and she has been all along. she is the one still looking for something. or maybe like you said, it's just that she is now unable to trust people because of all the ''players'' she had to deal with in the past.

Basia Bulat – It Can’t Be You Lyrics 10 years ago
She can't accept taht someone she believed in has let her down. Someone that was too ''terrified of love'' to stay with her and she can't get over the blow. I love the use of 'tar and feather'' very pretty. Amazing song really. Basia is great.

Band of Horses – Is There a Ghost Lyrics 10 years ago
When he lived alone probably means when he didn't feel attached to someone else or something else. Or maybe he never knew he was. And now the thing or person are gone and their shadow is still there, keeping him awake.

Band of Horses – The Funeral Lyrics 10 years ago
This song seems to be about someone who's in a bad place and has someone to blame for it. ''I'm coming up only to pull you under. I'm coming up only to show you wrong.''. They will come out of their state of misery only to drag that person back down with them. And to prove that person was wrong in the way they thought of them or treated them. Maybe it's depression, drugs, etc. The funeral part seems to mean that the person is giving up and ready for the end of that relationship or that part of their life. And they are just saying that they are ready for it. And they aren't expecting anything good anymore.

Kate Bush – Wuthering Heights Lyrics 10 years ago
I think Heathcliff was her only master. Yes, she wanted money and good society, but she wanted it for Heathcliff and her. She planned to get Edgar money for them. She never made any choice. She was Heathcliff's and he was hers from the beginning.

The Tallest Man on Earth – Love Is All Lyrics 10 years ago
Well I walk upon the river like it's easier than land
Evil's in my pocket and your will is in my hand
Oh, your will is in my hand

(As everybody pointed out, the song is filled with biblical references and it's probably about him falling out of faith. But it also seems to be about someone unable to love properly and filled with anger/pain/confusion. The evil is all of that and he is carrying that weight around, while the will in is hand is the love of a girl.)

And I'll throw it in the current that I stand upon so still
Love is all, from what I've heard, but my heart's learned to kill
Oh, mine has learned to kill

(He won't keep her love. And he doesn't really feel the lost. Eventhough it's a current notion that love is all and that love can fix everything, all he's learned from life is to hurt people, cuz that's all he ever got.)

Oh, I said I could rise
From the harness of our goals
Here come the tears
But like always, I let them go
Just let them go

(Maybe he told her she could save him and they could make plans together and overcome his problemes, but he couldn't do it. And he doesn't hold on to it or to the sadness. Like he was already excepting them to fail.)

And now spikes will keep on falling from the heavens to the floor
The future was our skin and now we don't dream anymore
No, we don't dream anymore

(The pain will keep on being there and the future used to be something that he could look forward to, but now he doesn't have dreams anymore and he's just empty.)

Like a house made from spider webs and the clouds rolling in
I bet this mighty river's both my savior and my sin
Oh, my savior and my sin

(The house is maybe their house, as like their home. The place that was theirs where they could feel safe and loved for a while. But now it's growing old and dark and the love she had for him isn't enough anymore. The river will come and destroy everything. Like if everything is to be ruined he won't protest, cuz maybe it will save him from this love that isn't love. The river is both his savior and his sin, because he is guilty of letting this love go to waste.)

CHVRCHES – Lies Lyrics 10 years ago
This seems to be about a girl who is sleeping with some guy, giving him what he needs (emotionally too), but she needs to see him vulnerable and weak (show me both knees) so she can have that power over him. She is lying to him, telling him the lies he wants/need to hear, probably meaning she's just doing it cuz she can, cuz she doesn't wanna be alone. But she doesn't actually love him.

CHVRCHES – We Sink Lyrics 10 years ago
This songs seem to be about a relationship that is very meaningful. But the guy seems to be treating her not too well, for some reason. And maybe he is thinking about leaving. She is mad at him for many reasons, for his weakness. The chores (I'll be a thorn in your side...) just seems to be saying that if he leaves she will never forgive him and that she will just be something painful to him or make sure that she is something painful to him... She seems to be talking out of anger. And my favorite part is ''We sink, we lift our love''. It is a nice contrast with the rest of the chorus that sounds spiteful. Just saying that even if everything goes wrong and they are lost and sinking they will lift their love, so that it doesn't sink with them. As if they can actually go throuhg anything, they just have to hold on.

Leonard Cohen – Hallelujah Lyrics 10 years ago
Very pretty images throughout the whole song. Using religion to talk about love and pain and being broken and so on. It's all pretty straighforward in a way. Some lyrics are missing though. ''There's a blaze of light in every word'' is one of the prettiest line I've ever heard/read. Just beautiful.

Leonard Cohen – Famous Blue Raincoat Lyrics 10 years ago
It's four in the morning, the end of December
I'm writing you now just to see if you're better
New York is cold, but I like where I'm living
There's music on Clinton Street all through the evening.

(This sets the mood. Really pretty setting. Cold New York December and music. Cohen is writting to the man who had an affair with his lover Jane. Maybe it was a friend of his. Or maybe he just learned to know him through the whole thing. Cohen has said himself that he didn't know who this song was really about and that he had a blue raincoat. I think he was just doing some creative writing and mixing his own emotions into it.)

I hear that you're building your little house deep in the desert
You're living for nothing now, I hope you're keeping some kind of record.

(The guy is lost. Isolating himself. Cohen hopes the guy is still keeping track of what is happening and not just letting go of everything.)

Yes, and Jane came by with a lock of your hair
She said that you gave it to her
That night that you planned to go clear
Did you ever go clear?

(Jane came back to Cohen after the guy left her. She had a lock of his hair as a keepsake. The guy left to try to get back on his feet. To feel better. Maybe it's a reference to scientology or drugs or just anything bad. And Cohen wonders if the guy ever achieved that goal, in a friendly way.)

Ah, the last time we saw you you looked so much older
Your famous blue raincoat was torn at the shoulder
You'd been to the station to meet every train
And you came home without Lili Marlene

(Cohen and Jane saw the guy at some point and it seems like he was not doing better at all. Still looking for himself or something. Lili Marlene is an old song and I think here it just means the guy didn't find the peace-love-clarity-strenght he was looking for, although he did try hard.)

And you treated my woman to a flake of your life
And when she came back she was nobody's wife.

(Cohen is a little mad that the guy didn't take good care of Jane. Treating her like she was nothing and just leaving her when he was feeling too bad. She probably went back to Cohen after he left her, but she wasn't Cohen's anymore. Althought it seems he ended up taking her back. At least he is still sleeping with her and seeing her sometimes.)

Well I see you there with the rose in your teeth
One more thin gypsy thief
Well I see Jane's awake
She send her regards.

(Cohen remembers the guy to be a fake and someone who just takes and never gives back cuz he is lost himself and looking for something. And then he says Jane is awake. Pointing out that she is still around. She tells Cohen to say hi to him for her.)

And what can I tell you my brother, my killer
What can I possibly say?
I guess that I miss you, I guess I forgive you
I'm glad you stood in my way.

(When Cohen says ''his brother'' maybe he means that the guy was a good friend. Or simply that he understands how one can be really hurt and lost and end up hurting people around him. And so Cohen forgives him. The word ''brother'' also contradict the word ''killer'' that he uses right after. Probably just trying to show the contradiction he feels about the guy. Still loving him, but hating him for taking Jane away. And he seems to be glad, in a way, that the guy took Jane away. As Cohen and Jane both needed it. Maybe their relationship was suffocating or something.)

If you ever come by here, for Jane or for me
And your enemy is sleeping, and his woman is free.

(Cohen doesn't mind seeing him again. The guy probably was a friend. And Cohen is just saying that he doesn't wanna fight anymore and that he doesn'T care much. He can take Jane back if he wants. He's probably tired of all the pain he suffered from Jane going away and he has let go of it all.)

Yes, and thanks, for the trouble you took from her eyes
I thought it was there for good so I never tried.

(Jane was probably a sad, broken girl too. Cohen thought nothing could save her and never even tried to help. And he's glad cuz the guy seems to have given something back to Jane. Or given her hope or something. And now she's more peaceful.)

Sincerely L Cohen

(Very pretty... his name at the end, like a real letter. I really like the whole mood of the song. Somewhere between regrets, forgiveness, letting go and not killing yourself over the way things are and how some things can't be changed. Incredible song really.

Leonard Cohen – Suzanne Lyrics 10 years ago
And Jesus was a sailor when he walked upon the water
And he spent a long time watching from his lonely wooden tower

(Pretty imagery. Watching from his cross or just watching down on us. Lonely, I think.)

And when he knew for certain only drowning men could see him
He said all men shall be sailors then until the sea shall free them

(Jesus realised that it was easier for desperate (or dying) men to believe in him and cling on to him. So he decided everybody would suffer, so that sufferings could bring them close to him. The sea (death or faith) frees them of their earthly sufferings and bring them to him. He saves them. But he needs them to need saving.)

But he himself was broken long before the sky would open
Forsaken almost human he sank beneath your wisdom like a stone

(Cohen presented Jesus as a very human, weak and weary person. That needed saving too. But if you are too clever and think too much about it he will sink too (the sailor metaphor... sink = suffering) because you will see that it doesn't make sense and that you don't actually need him. That he made you need him cuz he needed you, in a way. End of faith.)

You want to travel with him.

(You want to be with him and know him anywyay. You understand and forgive him.)

I think this is amazing poetry. Really pretty. Really endearing in a way. Everyone showing weakness through the things they try to be and try to hide. The flaws in religion. The humanity in religion.

And now Susanne... She was a real person, as it's been said in previous comments. He's just talking about their strong connection and how she just points out the beauty in everything.

Jewel – Intuition Lyrics 10 years ago
I get why she did the whole 0304 album. Kind of a statement on how the pop industry is flawed and so on. It is funny. It just seems like she took it a little too far. The only people that actually liked the album are all the ones she was trying to mock. She was a great feminist icon in the 90s, in a decade of great female music. She did seem to give that all up. I think it's understandable how most of her fans were disappointed with the way she decided to go after this album. She was really young when she wrote all the music that made her a folk icon. I think she has simply grown out of the sad-twiste-troubled-teen/adult thing and not ''sell out'' to make money.
