Gregory Alan Isakov – That Moon Song Lyrics 10 years ago
I think that this song is about a guy who made a mistake and he's singing about the feeling of regret.

The tail lights burning red and being hotter than hell symbolizes while he was in the moment of his mistake he knew it was wrong. It was counterintuitive to continue on, but he did. Now he's long gone.

The smoke in the air can't hide his shame. Pretty obvious. He feels bad and nothing can hide his regret, he feels like it's being displayed on a movie screen.

He compares the girl to the moon. Constantly hanging over him in his dark times, pulling on his heart and causing it to move (waves). She gives him rough seas.

"and your beauty left me broke and hungry" favorite line of the song. This girl is obviously something else. She leaves him speechless, but the line about having nothing to say I think also refers to him not knowing what to say when she found out about what he did.

He ends the song saying that not even a broken-hearted lover has anything on him; in other words, his pain is worse than anyone has ever felt. His feeling is unlike any other for what he did.
