| The possibility of Masonic allusions is certainly interesting, but I couldn't help but catch hints of the story of Faust and the selling of his soul to the devil through the demon Mephistopheles. The line "'Neath devils torn asunder" conjures the fate of Dr. Faustus in Christopher Marlowe's play "The Tragical History of Doctor Faustus." Of course, in Marlowe's play, Faustus is torn to pieces by demons at the end as his contract with the devil matures. Could the song be the voice of Mephistopheles? | |

Am I the only one who gets a religious vibe from this song? Think about it. "I'm a WALKING BELIEVER. I'm a GHOST and a HEALER. I'm the SHAPE of the HOLE INSIDE YOUR HEART." The entire song runs off of one idea: following someone BY CROOKED STEPS. THEN there's the reference to blood cutting a deep river, "and we're diving." Remind you at all of baptism maybe? Just a thought, and it wouldn't be the first song that Chris has written with some twisted spin on spirituality or containing vague religious reflections. |
