Neil Young – Tell Me Why Lyrics | 2 years ago |
I always thought the lyric was, "When you're old enough to repaint, But young enough to sell" If you accept that, the line makes metaphorical sense referring to a [life, issue, belief, etc] as something you could completely redo, which might take a lifetime to workout so better done when young, or, you could just gloss it over, put a layer of paint on the difficulty and move on, something you might choose when you're older and disinterested in challenges. |

Steely Dan – Your Gold Teeth II Lyrics | 10 years ago |
The song is about considering yourself a player and facing the inevitable: growing older and/or being overcome by wilder, more energetic more powerful and incomprehensible youth or competition. Throw out your gold teeth - play your hand; you'll see that sooner or later you get your action covered no matter what - life is unreal. |
The Decemberists – The Bagman's Gambit Lyrics | 10 years ago |
"There in fours" - formal jackets to military uniforms have four buttons, and are worn with a tie tied in a four-in-hand knot. The bagman is the narrator, who was used to free the spy (his gambit). The spy later acknowledged the favor with a (semi-) anonymous wave in public. The narrator was left holding the bag, so to speak. |
