After the Fire – Der Kommissar Lyrics 9 years ago
@[jalopy:1358] Thanks for the insight. I've been going down memory lane, listening a lot of 80s music I'd not heard in years, and was suddenly struck by the fact that I had no idea what this awesome song was about. My few years of German weren't enough to lead me to the coke reference. Great insight into the song.

'Til Tuesday – Voices Carry Lyrics 9 years ago
@[inoticethings:1194] lol If it were about a pimp and his "bitch" he'd just beat the crap out of her every time she got out of line. He wouldn't be worrying about voices carrying, since he'd naturally be a heartless, evil prick. Sad for African Americans, he'd also most likely be male, black, and firm in his belief that women represent nothing but potential "benjamins" and should always be enslaved by ruthless black men. Sadder still, the women in this "lifestyle" almost always acquire some form of Stockholm Syndrome and within a few weeks or months actually believe all the lies their pimps tell them. It's a pathetic and sick part of African American culture in the lower socioeconomic strata of American society.

'Til Tuesday – Voices Carry Lyrics 9 years ago
I can't see this song as about an abusive relationship--at least in terms of harsh, direct physical and psychological abuse. However, the woman in the relationship feels a lot of pain in not knowing whether her man is actually into her. Clearly, he's not willing make their relationship's details public and is incredibly concerned about how her questions, voiced in public, will make him appear to others. One thing is certain: Rather than wailing about the pain of the relationship, the woman in the song ought to dump the fucker and go find someone who will more likely love and appreciate her. But as women all too often do, she'll stick with him because he's the popular bad boy. She'd rather feel like shit than feel the remorse of seeing him with another woman--even though he's nailing every chick he possibly can whenever she's not around. Perhaps I am projecting here, but let's face it: It's the truth.

@[IllToast2That:147] What a sad, simplistic perspective on Dylan's voice, one which no real Dylan fan would have. His voice--like those whom he powerfully influenced, like Mark Knopfler and Bruce Springsteen, to name just two of many--is all about character and expression. He is the reason, the sole reason, why we singers are "allowed" to sing without having voices like the clowns on American Idol. You have a simple, silly mind, but in all fairness you also have a right to express your silliness in the bumbling, confused fashion you do just like the rest of us.

@[edprence:146] There is clearly some sexuality implied in those lines. I don't see her prostrating herself before him. Female figures in Dylan's songs are powerful women, women who are archetypes and not so much the stereotype you may be thinking of.

@[edprence:145] there's no evidence that he uses the word "Zimmy" in the lyrics. The actual line is "Said to me, 'Don't I know your name?'" Maybe it just sounds like Zimmy to some people?

@[cavern:140] nice interpretation. Going back to Blonde on Blonde's Visions of Johanna, where there are at least two different women, both of whom embody Sara to one degree or another (his then pregnant first wife whom he was then living with in NYC), Dylan is clearly prone to melding real women with archetypical female figures as in Tangled Up in Blue. What a lyrical and musical (song writing) genius he is.

Little Feat – Fat Man In The Bathtub Lyrics 9 years ago
Since Lowell George wrote many songs based upon his personal experiences (he was a drinker and cocaine user), your premise that this song is free from any drug references is simply not accurate. "Dimes" are ten dollar bags of any drug, and in the 1970s a dime of cocaine or heroin was enough to keep a person high for a while. As for speedballs, they are a mixture of cocaine and heroin, heated in a spoon, and injected intravenously. They were very popular in the 70s and early 80s and caused a great many drug deaths, including John Belushi's. Lowell George himself died from a mixture of alcohol and cocaine, with the alcohol being the depressant (as heroin is) and the coke being the stimulant--and so, sadly and ironically, Lowell did not heed Spotcheck Billy's words about not wanting to die from speedballs.

Little Feat – Sailin' Shoes Lyrics 9 years ago
Were you around when said "cult" was following the band? Little Feat was an excellent two stage band, having played a beautiful blend of blues and New Orleans influenced rock in the 1970s, until the lead singer and song writer, Lowell George, died of an overdose in the late 1970s. About a decade later the remaining members of LIttle Feat" reformed and hired a new and excellent lead singer. They put out a hugely popular album and did an outstanding job supporting it all over the world. If a band is no longer around or popular, that doesn't translate into it being a band with a "cult" following. They were never a marginalized band that was too strange for all but "cult" members to follow.

Dead Kennedys – Holiday in Cambodia Lyrics 9 years ago
You're off here. Most of the above interpretations are in synch with history. JB was far more intelligent than your comment suggests. He was saying a lot of amazingly on target things all at once, not simply telling the liberal elite to fuck off and go to Cambodia. Also, JB might have written a very different song in 1990 than the brilliant one he wrote in 1980. Iran-Contra and countless other horrors executed by the Reagan administration hadn't happened yet. I doubt JB was even aware in 1980 that the U.S. was implicit in the murder of millions of Cambodians under Pol Pot's regime by supporting it with millions in aid.

Dead Kennedys – Holiday in Cambodia Lyrics 9 years ago
Excellent analysis. Actually, the first three or four posts are really on target, I think, concerning what JB had in mind. I like your socio-cultural analysis. I think where people need to be careful is thinking that JB (as the first poster seems to suggest) was essentially trashing liberalism and promoting rampant free market capitalism because the song focuses on how a "Marxist revolution" (which obviously Pol Pot's murderous regime was not) can be twisted into the justification for the horrendous acts of murder and brutality. The song is a brilliant critique of Pol Pol's insanely bloody leadership as it is a hilarious poke at the wealthy liberal college students of the late 70s and early 80s. (The song was perfectly released in 1980, when so many things swung right in this country--some of which was positive, but much of which translated supporting regimes as bad as Pol Pot's in the name of "freedom," such as teaching the Contras how to disembowel pregnant women in front of "left leaning" towns to teach them who they must support in the next election. The CIA did this and countless other atrocious things in the 1980s after supposedly having been reigned in by the Carter administration's new CIA regulations.)

John Mellencamp – Walk Tall Lyrics 10 years ago
You don't believe this country has a plethora of ignorant people in it? It makes perfect sense to me and no one's ever called me pompous. I think the song--a suggestion to "Walk Tall" amidst the ignorance, bigotry, racism, narrow-mindedness that infect so many in this country--is not only clearly sensible but also very positive. I think your comment could use some support (what about this song makes the writer/singer seem pompous to you? Is there actual evidence that the singer/songwriter believes that everyone who doesn't agree with his viewpoint are simple minded and uniformed, or is that an inference you've made based on personal perspective rather than empirical support? Could he be referring people of the type like that old lady at a John McCain presidential rally years ago who called Obama a "Muslim, Arab, and a terrorist," and the "Birthers" who genuinely believe the president was born in Africa? Or who don't know where South America is and have never heart of Uzbekistan, Tajikistan, or even Pakistan? Who believe California is an island near Greenland?

Alice in Chains – The Devil Put Dinosaurs Here Lyrics 10 years ago
Jerry may have authored those lyrics, but the parts of the song where Jesus is "dissed" represent giving voice to those freaks who surround themselves with silly myths and hatred in an attempt at making sense out of life. Anyone who's read about Jesus' life knows he was never reported (I write reported because nothing he actually said was written down when he said it) to have said something terrible about homosexuals. Therefore, neither Jerry nor the song is dissing Jesus, but instead is meant to represent attitude of the fools who believes Jesus hated gays. (I like what you wrote about the song possibly being about the dichotomy between religion and science and how it spins off endlessly replicated arguments.)

Alice in Chains – The Devil Put Dinosaurs Here Lyrics 10 years ago
If you are a serious fan of AIC, you might give the song and album a few more listens. Jerry isn't writing those lyrics as if he himself is musing about religious absurdities, but rather is playing the role of the person who surrounds himself with myriad myths that have no bearing on living a truly moral life. I would be remiss if I failed to mention that I think your statement about Layne "being" AIC is ludicrous. Jerry wrote so much of their music and lyrics and sung both high and low harmonies and lead on many of their songs. It was I think a bit more Jerry's band than it ever was Layne's. Finally, you should be grateful that AIC tours now with an awesome lead singer with whom Jerry has played for nearly 20 years. Layne was so strung out 99% of the time that touring simply stopped for the band. As much as Jerry loved Layne, it must have been agony for him not to play all those great songs live after the band's first few tours. It was definitely a sad thing to miss when I was growing up listening to their wonderful music.

Kid Rock – American Badass Lyrics 10 years ago
I totally disagree with those who disregard Kid Rock and this song as "pure white trash." He plays a lot of roles, and one of them is the stereotyped "trailer park white trash." It's not intended to celebrate anything except being disconnected from the mainstream via bravado and obnoxious but hilarious lyrics. I don't love all of his stuff, but I like the role he plays. Not too many of can say we've lived life doing whatever the &^%$ we want while playing music and touring. As he sings in "Cocky," "They say I am cocky--And I say what?--it ain't braggin' mother&^%$#@ if you back it up!" :)

Sublime – Burritos Lyrics 10 years ago
I have to say that this song, like all really good songs he wrote, has multiple possible meanings. I disagreed that it's absolutely about being dope sick, although that's how people who've been heroin addicts might see it. I suffer from intense depression, and I have days like he described without being on medication. Also, even w/medication, sometimes--just like describes--I don't want to the the "responsible" things/positive things OR the negative ones (getting high on whatever). The song could easily be just about "Everyone leave me the *&^% alone! I just want to hide in my room and sleep all day!"

Nirvana – You Know You're Right Lyrics 10 years ago
A lot of good facts and ideas in your interpretation. One thing that I don't think I read in your analysis is the fact that Cobain had a vicious stomach ailment that kept him in near constant pain--except, of course, when he used heroin. The pain factor likely contributed to his suicide.

I agree about Courtney being a factor and that it would be impossible to blame her solely for his death. She was probably a nightmare to be married to ("buried" sang Kurt in "All Apologies"), but with his addiction, depression, and physical pain, he had many other factors contributing to his suicide than his psychotic and also strung-out wife.

I am sure this has been said, but it's ridiculous to see the lyrics to David Bowie's tune "The Man Who Sold The World" in place of the last (and one of the best) Nirvana songs in existence. I tried changing the lyrics and got that silly message about copyrights. I am sure Nirvana wants to keep Bowie lyrics under the title, "You Know You're Right." WTF?????

The Go-Gos – Our Lips Are Sealed Lyrics 10 years ago
This song was not originally written with high school girls as the target audience. The rhythm guitarist, Jane Wiedlin, wrote the song to her then boyfriend with whom she'd had an affair before he returned to England. Being the pre-email years, she and the guy exchanged a lot of written letters for the duration of their romance. Jane wrote these song lyrics and music in her parents' basement--a recording of which survives to this day--and the music sounded much slower and more downbeat, almost bluesy. When the Go Gos got signed and recorded their first album, the song was chosen as the lead-off hit single, but only after the producer and Go Gos transformed the somewhat dark song into poppy, happy, very upbeat song.
