Actually - I think that the song is loosely based on the movie "Psycho". Paul seemed to have been a pretty big fan of the film - he once called Tony Perkins his favorite actor, and the string arrangement for "Eleanor Rigby" is pretty clearly based on the "Psycho" soundtrack. (It may have been arranged by George Maritn, but Paul had input, too.)
It just seems to have a lot more in common with Norman Bates than with John Lennon. : ) "Momma don't worry, your Teddy Boy's here, taking good care of you..." |

I feel like it's more about losing control of yourself through nightlife. "Day for night" is a movie term for when they shoot night scenes during the day, with a tinted lense. So, day and night are backwards. "The director's long gone, still the play goes on and on and on...." There is no direction, anymore. "Your dreams were disappearing so you disappeared into your head", "There's no voice, you can't choose..." You are stuck in a pattern, and it isn't fun anymore. |

To me, this is a song about taking time to relax, and be comfortable. Life is hard, but you need to let yourself have a break, now and then. It's not a complicated message, but this song has helped me through some rough times. |
