| Rilo Kiley – Does He Love You? Lyrics | 11 years ago |
|
Took me years to decide how I thought this song went. To me, the singer moved away from her hometown. She wanted to "get away" from the "tired and lonely fate" of staying there her whole life, so she moved out to Cali. I imagine she left over this guy, who drove her and her friend apart. She was originally with him, perhaps, and he cheated on her with her friend. After she left, her friend and the guy stayed together. Despite her leaving and him being taken, she still has feelings for him and he still contacts her saying he's going to leave her friend and come join her in Cali. The next few verses are a conversation between her and her friend. I imagine the singer talking to her friend with a sort-of sarcastic congradulating, one her friend can pick up on and takes it as jealousy of her future family (instead of jealousy over her husband). Her friend replies, "Let's not forget ourselves, good friend You and I were almost dead And you're better off for leaving Yeah, you're better off for leaving" Meaning her friend thinks it's good that the singer left because they were able to keep their friendship intact since the singer wouldn't be around her hubby.... Eventually she's had it with her friend when she calls crying about how she didn't love her husband until he was going to leave, even though the singer has loved this man all along. The singer realizes that the man didn't love HER until she left, and tells her friend she can't be angry at her husband because her friend herself wanted to be free once upon a time too, and not to worry, because the singer realizes the man will never leave nor change. |

| Mayday Parade – You're Dead Wrong Lyrics | 11 years ago |

This song is, to me, about the same woman in One Man Drinking Games. Only this is their relationship now, and OMDG was about their last night together before he/she left. "She's got all my dreams I've got these broken things" He only has his dreams (being in a band, never being home, always on tour) to give to her, and she only has broken things (her heart, that he broke in One Man Drinking Games when he left) to give to him. So, essentially, they give each other their all...but their all isn't much to give to each other. "If you think this was easy You're wrong." On track with OMDG, where he claims "Knowing that for someone you're an angel sent to save" and he drinks to that, knowing she'll be happy, or at least be with someone that isn't him. ("May I say I loved you more?") "And we both know I loved you more." Yeah. You tell her. Even though you broke her heart, ya jerk. HOWEVER....One Man Drinking Games was a fictional song, so I'm assuming this one is too. Nice tie backs to it, regardless. |

| Tracy Chapman – Fast Car Lyrics | 11 years ago |
|
This song is about the vicious cycle of life. The vicious cycle of poverty, of alcoholism, of single parenthood. The fast car symbolizes her dreams of making it out of this cycle. Sadly it never happens. She ends up back in the same position she started, with nothing; the same job, poor, taking care of an alcoholic partner. She realizes that her dreams of getting out of this lifestyle are never going to happen and now she wants him to leave and take his fast car (all the broken promises and dreams) with him. |

| Mayday Parade – Hold Onto Me Lyrics | 11 years ago |

Personally I think most of this song is from the girl's perspective. It's about an unhealthy, dependent relationship. The first verse is him saying he knows it all started because of his problems that she saw and wanted to "fix". (I know I've got my problems and it starts with me She saw something inside that I can't see And late at night, yeah, she'll comfort me) From then on it switches to what she's saying. She falls in love with him and gets scared that he's going to leave her or be unfaithful. She starts taking the blame for things just so he'll stay and "hold on to her". (She wakes in the night and whispers oh so quiet "old onto me, hold onto me Don't you ever leave, don't you ever leave I know I've got my problems and it's probably me") (Sometimes at night I can hear her dreams, "Come rescue me, come rescue me Don't you ever leave, don't you ever leave I know we've got our problems and it's probably me") The bridge is him admitting that he knows he won't stay faithful (I'm a drifter's body in an open sea) but that there's no place like "home" (her). The last verse is her saying she knows the relationship isn't healthy, and she knows he isn't going to stay faithful to her, but she would never be able to leave him because she loves him too much. So him "holding on to her" in the moment will have to be enough. Or, the last verse could be him telling her he knows it's been his fault the whole time and he knows she'll leave him eventually because of it. Even if she does, he will always love her. He could never let go of her despite how badly he treated her. |

Personally, this song reminds me of a person who lost their girlfriend (or boyfriend) because they're an alcoholic. This person left him because he can't stop drinking- and this causes him to drink more, even though he knows that's why she left him. He's singing of the vicious cycle he's in. He hopes that when he wakes up he's still drunk so he doesn't think about how he spent the night with a random girl. Alcohol hasn't killed him (yet), but it isn't making him any stronger, either. He realizes this as he wakes up, and he thinks about his ex, and he wishes he was sober for her. He's sobering up and starting to think about how she's gone... Thinking of her makes him sad, and he starts asking himself if he should drink to cope with it, even though he knows he shouldn't... but he ends up drinking again just to feel "love"- or to be able to stop thinking of his ex and find a new toy for the night. "I wanna hold your heart in both hands I'll watch it fizzle at the bottom of a Coke can" - I think this is very symbolic. He knows his alcohol problem will destroy her if she were to come back to him (his addiction is the coke) but he still wants her to be his. Since he can't have this, he tells her he would still want to be friends with her. But "burns don't heal like before" meaning it's hard to be friends since neither of them are completely healed from the relationship (especially him). "On cold days Coldplay's out like the band's the name I know I can't heal things with a hand shake" He can't make the relationship better just by saying he'll change, because.... "You know I can't change as I began saying You cut me wide open like landscape" He knows he can't change, and she knows that he's an alcoholic and can't change either. "Open bottles of beer but never champagne To applaud you with the sound that my hands make." Champange is for celebrating. He's not celebrating, he's mourning losing her love. And so, to cope with his sadness over her...... he drinks again. To feel love. And to end up on the right side of the wrong bed again in the morning, because someone else can distract him from his ex and his issues- at least until he begins to sober up again. I've dealt with alcoholic family members and boyfriends, and have had alcohol issues myself. This hits close to home for me. |

| Peter Bradley Adams – Between Us Lyrics | 12 years ago |

Not sure what the true meaning of this song is, but it sounds to me like an addict talking to a former girlfriend who left him because of his addiction and who he desperately wants back. I believe he's saying "hey stranger" in a kind of ironic/sarcastic way you might say to someone who you once knew well and lost touch with for a bit. The first verse is him trying to reconnect with her. (I know I don't know you But there's somewhere I've seen you before) He knows they've been apart and she's probably changed since leaving him (hence he doesn't know her anymore) but he wants her to remember he once knew her well. That they've been in this situation before. (Whatever your name is Whatever you do This living between us I'm willing to lose) He's telling her that he wants to get to know her again, that the time between them spent apart can be fixed. The second verse is him telling her he is trying to get sober/clean (I want you to hold me under these darkening skies) and that she's the only one he wants. He doesn't care about any girl he's been with since her or any man she's been with since him. (The ones in between us I'm willing to miss) The chorus is about his addiction. In the end, that's the only real issue that was ever "between them", and not any of the things he talks about in the verses. He is willing to do all these things for her but he cannot stop being an addict. He is "drifting out over deep ocean and the tide it won't take me back in" meaning he is using/drinking and she knows that he is, making the problem between them ever larger (like an ocean he can't swim across). It's getting so big he can't talk his way out of it. (In these disparate nights I'll call you again and again) He knows he screwed up again, and he is calling trying to fix it but she won't answer because she's over dealing with it. (There's a comfort, comfort in things we believe But I live in danger, wanting the things I can't see) She feels no comfort being with him because she doesn't believe/trust him. He is chasing either chasing his vision of them together or chasing his high. (Wherever you live now Wherever you walk This distance between us I'm willing to cross) She has left again. He is willing to go be with her, but his addiction is making him unable to do any of these things he has told her he would do. He ends the way he started because it's a vicious cycle. They stop talking due to his addiction, he tries to get her back after a while but he keeps using, and keeps breaking her trust and furthering the issues between them until they stop talking...and they are strangers again. |
