Frank Zappa – Any Way The Wind Blows Lyrics 7 years ago
As I understand it, he's very pleased with his new girlfriend and doesn't miss his old one, who apparently broke his heart.

Jethro Tull – Sossity, You're a Woman Lyrics 7 years ago
It's not really about a woman at all, he's damning Society with this song. He's saying that the whole of Society is a messed up old bitch that clings to him and tries to control him, and just pointlessly restricts him. He says Society is too old for him. He's pretty much right. Individuals when alone are hopeless and terrified. But when they band together as a mob or a Society, they become a scary monster. Or maybe just a nasty old witch. Anyways, we all need to be part of Society, but secretly none of us like it. Ian just walks away from it, he finds it useless.

Steppenwolf – Fag Lyrics 7 years ago
Well, Mars Bonfire wrote this, so you better ask him. But I think he wants it to be a mystery. I would have loved to hear a Bowie cover of this. I don't know why, maybe he could have turned it into a rock opera, he and Freddy Mercury.

Steppenwolf – Fag Lyrics 7 years ago
In the Sixties, all the teenagers were in stitches when they saw that title. We thought it was the funniest name for a song ever. We wondered what the words were like, and were very disappointed when it turned out to be an instrumental. They showed a bunch of little men in the album cover art who looked like they were on the point of doing something gay, but they never quite got there. The band is Canadian, and I think fag means cigarette butt in that country. I always thought it was a veiled reference to Nixon, in the sense of "creep."

I suspect that Fag was about Richard Nixon, whom the band found objectionable.

The English Beat – Save It For Later Lyrics 8 years ago
It's about the contentious relationship of us all with existence and life itself. When we lift the lid of the box, as we must, everything runs away and lets us down. But hope always remains. And perhaps a measure of love, hanging in the air elusively. It's about finding peace in the midst of a world that's always fading away. It's about making it reappear with the possibility of belief.

Genesis – The Carpet Crawlers Lyrics 8 years ago
What are the Carpet Crawlers? They are Rael's frightened thoughts, groping for the sunlight and Life in the depths of his unconscious mind. He only vaguely understands that somewhere he is dying in the outside world, and he and his thoughts are frightened and desperate. Surrounded by his random thoughts, Rael mounts a spiral staircase to escape back into Life. But all he finds are his deepest fears and an even deeper mystery. It seems that his quest to live again is going to be denied. His dead brother appears but is not at all helpful.

Genesis – The Carpet Crawlers Lyrics 8 years ago
This is the message of this song and this album. Life is about nothing except Being Alive, nothing more. Don't wait until your life is over and done to cherish your life. Because you may suddenly be gone tomorrow. And don't think that the routines of your daily life are humdrum and meaningless. Your existence is the only part of the vast universe that has been given to you to have and understand. Life is a precious miracle. Who really knows if YOU will ever have another life again after this one is over. The old men speculate and hope, but that is completely Unknown. Rael was young, he never thought about Death before Death suddenly found him. That could be you, or any of us. Life is fleeting, so beware.

Genesis – The Carpet Crawlers Lyrics 8 years ago
The entire album is about the dreams and visions of a young hit and run victim in NYC before he dies and merges with God. Our hero is a Puerto Rican gang-member spray painting things on walls. As he walks down Broadway, he sees a strange vision of a lamb lying down. He wonders what it means, but it's God warning him that he's about to die. He is struck by a truck which sends him flying. His life flashes in front of his eyes as he lapses into a coma. From now on, what he sees in his deepest mind is his only world. The Carpet Crawlers are his thoughts swimming up toward the light, he's trying to wake up. Instead he enters another stranger dream about his deepest fears. He keeps seeing his brother, who possibly died earlier. In the end he passes away from a world he no longer can see, and becomes one with God, or It. The album is about how we take life for granted until it is lost. And even a gang-member is vulnerable and child-like at the end. The Lamb came to conduct him to a spirit world that he recked little of before his life was snuffed out by random fate. It is you, it is me.

The Velvet Underground – She's My Best Friend Lyrics 8 years ago
The "girl" is obviously heroin. He seems to be talking about a grisly atrocity that happens at some point, since somebody's feet get cut off and are rolling around in the street, looking like jelly rolls. Ah, the mean streets of New York. At another point, he's telling junkie girls to look up and see him at the window. She made Jam when she came? She must have been sick then. A strangely cheerful, sinister, and chilling song about being a junkie in the big city, with little flashes and vignettes you might glimpse in its seedy and hidden corners. It hurts to be that kinda fella, but he is anyways. And his only woman is a white horse.

Pixies – River Euphrates Lyrics 8 years ago
Mr. Lyric, your interpretation of the song is interesting and well thought out, but I think you are on the wrong track nonetheless. You think it is about Sex? Hmm. Sex is fun, this song doesn't sound fun. This song sounds agonized and horrified. Francis' screams are not of passion, they sound like the damned in Hell. The lead guitar sounds sinister and Military, kind of devilish. I think this song is a nightmarish scenario of a war in the Middle East. The Tire is also a Tiger he's riding. Whenever we fight in the Middle East, we have the .Tiger by the Tail, and that Tiger can turn and eat us just when we think we're "winning." Because people don't win in a War in the Middle East, they just kill until they die. Or they go home and run away from the unsolvable mess. Only to come back later, because the mess once again spirals out of control. Do you know what I think that "Tire" is really. I think it is a bloated dead body rushing down the river, black, dead, swollen to bursting and putrefying. I think that a G.I. clings to it to avoid drowning in the rushing water, but he is screaming in agonized horror as he rides. He is possibly escaping an ambush, he is alone in a rushing torrent, near death, with only a dead body as company. Listen to Francis' hellish screams again. I like my explanation better than yours. The horror! The horror! And I hope that Surfer Rosa is about something besides sex, because sex isn't very Deep.

The Who – Rael Lyrics 9 years ago
The enemy in the song is clearly the Saracens fighting the Crusaders in the Holy Land, in days of old. Red Chin could be a sly reference to the Mongol army which did invade Palestine in the 1100's. But the Mongol invaders were met by an Egyptian army with stolen Chinese firearms who shot them all to hell. This battle at Ain Jalut was the first use of firearms in the Western world, and the first serious check that the Mongols ever received. Perhaps our Crusader heroes wandered right into the middle of this battle and got shot off their horses by the gunners. Moon's drums sound like gunfire at the end.

@[54markl:17480] The Mongol commander had guns too, but he left them back in his camp at Baghdad thinking they woudn't be needed. This proved to be a fatal error. The Mongol army was shocked and demoralized when they discovered that the Egyptians had procured guns of their own, and the Mongol Knights were picked off their horses by the score. The Mongols were utterly routed, and soon guns had spread everywhere in the West.

The Who – Rael Lyrics 9 years ago
@[54markl:17479] I think that Pete originally wrote Wretches, but was told the Arabs might object. So he changed it to Red Chins, thinking the Chinese wouldn't mind. As it happened, a Chinese army led by Mongolians did invade Palestine in the 1100's, only to be defeated at Ain Jalut by Egyptians toting, are you ready for this, the first hand-held gunpowder weapons ever seen in the West! Some Chinese gunners had deserted the Mongols and taught the Egyptians the technology. Maybe Pete's Crusaders blindly walked into the midst of this battle and got all shot to hell. Perhaps that's what the Tommy music signifies, the Crusaders getting shot off their horses. Perhaps the deaf, dumb, and blind boy saw all of this in a vision. Anyways, they all die at the end, it's a sad song about the delusionality that always accompanies war. Meanwhile, the Venetians sail to France and enslave their orphans. Nice guys.

The Who – Rael Lyrics 9 years ago
It's about some Crusader knights in Medieval days fighting the Saracens in the Holy Land (Rael). If things get hairy, the Venetian galleys are supposed to pick the Crusader forces up and take them to safety. But the treacherous Venetians take the money and run, leaving the Knights to be massacred by the Muslims. This is close to what really happened. It was absurd that the Europeans wanted to annex Israel, it wasn't even theirs. The Venetians mock their folly and crazy bravado and leave them to their quixotic fate. Gabriel claims that he never heard of this song when he named his NYC hero Rael, but, ahem, that's a hell of a coincidence, Peter. The other Peter was probably extremely annoyed.

The Velvet Underground – Lady Godiva's Operation Lyrics 12 years ago
When Lou Reed was a teenager growing up in (on?) Long Island, his very conservative and disapproving parents tricked him into having Shock Treatments, to "cure" his gayness. His gayness was not cured, but he began having very peculiar thoughts which were perhaps the genesis of his poetic genius. He never forgave his parents for this betrayal. This song is no doubt a paranoid fantasy about this experience.

The Velvet Underground – Lady Godiva's Operation Lyrics 12 years ago
This song is about a male transvestite who wants a sex-change operation to become a woman. "Her" family agrees to pay for the operation and sends "her" to a doctor. But apparently her family hates her and tricks her, telling the doctor to give her a lobotomy instead. Alas, the lobotomy is botched and poor Lady Godiva dies. A dark fable of familial betrayal and societal hatred of the different.
