Surrealistic Pillow came out right when I was falling in love for the first time. It was deep, powerful and it was ultimately unrequited. I played this song "Today" over and over letting the tears flow. I still remember it fondly as one of the favorties of my youth all these decades later. And the following song "Coming Back to Me" was a perfect companion song. In fact if you listen to all the songs on that side of the album in sequence, it describes the beginnings, blossoming, full flower and bittersweet ending of a love relationship. The wistful longing and dreamlike quality of "Coming Back to Me" was soothing in a way. The Aiplane was my favorite group at that point and I'll always love them. |
