For me this song talks about getting rind of a bad/toxic friendship/relationship. This person only hurted you and everytime "she" was around you were sad. Although you never realize that, you thought this person was the best to be around and the only person who was worth your time. But someday this person decided to leave you and you felt bad/sad about it, putting the blame on you, thinking you hurt him/her. However one day you realized that since she/he left you felt happier, your thoughts became more positive than ever and everything has working very well. And you thought for yourself, "Oh my God this is the best that happened to me without I even noticed" That's why Gabrielle says "So keep on walking out" You didn't want that person to leave but now that she did (without warning) you saw what they really were and how they made your life a mess! & now that they're gone you're happier, your life is finally moving forward and nobody is putting you down every day! I can relate to this song, since my best friend in the world left me for the cool kids at school & after a long time of blaming myself I realized that it wasn't my fault at all, and I feel happier now. Because he was such a bad person to be around, he was always talking about how bad is life was and everytime something good happened he couldn't care less... Plus, when I was happy with something he always put my dream down saying something like "oh big deal" when yes, it was a big deal to me... And I thought that was okay, but it wasn't! I loved him for so long and when I finally got the guts to tell him I loved him he broke my heart in the worst way. Why did he do that? This is the reason why I love Coldplay, Coldplay is a band who let's us think about the meaning of the song, and we'll never know the real meaning and that's the magic of Coldplay in my opinion. Which one of us interpret the music in their life experiences. :) So this is what I think of the song: In my opinion the song talks about a crush, a crush who used to be a best friend. But then all fell apart when he decided to show what he really felt. They never talked again, and now he misses her. "Baby, It's been a long time coming, Such a long, long time. And I can't stop running, Such a long, long time." He's trying to run because he wants to forget her. He's trying to run from that feeling, to win their friendship again! And it has been a long time... "Can you hear my heart beating? Can you hear that sound? Cause I can't help thinking And I won't stop now" They were best friends so they had a really good connection. With "can you hear my heart beating?" I think he is asking if she misses him or thinks of him.
