Mary Turner was a pregnant black woman who was lynched in 1918 for protesting the lynching of her husband. The mob hung her upside down and set her on fire, then cut open her stomach so her fetus fell out onto the ground. Worse is the fact that the fetus had developed beyond just being a clump of cells and was a full fledged baby that just haden't been born yet. The baby was killed with a stomp to the head which is actually the most merciful thing they did.
The closing lines are probably Jamie using this case as a jumping off point to rant about blind patriotism in the wake of America's sins, but can also be interpreted as the interal monologue of black Americans returning from WW1 and finding that their treatment in the country they faught for hasn't improved. |
