I disagree that this song is about revenge; rather it is about understanding how one’s own actions are affecting their partner. “I'm having a hard time; I'm making you do the hard time, too” - This means to me that choosing to be with me while I am in this state is going to make you suffer right along with me. She says “I'm stuck in a bad way; and I'm gonna make you pay for it” -I take this to mean that this thing she is going through is affecting her so strongly that unwittingly she is going to cause her partner to experience it right along with her. Additionally, I think she wants to spare him this turmoil but can’t see a way to do so without saying goodbye. She also says at the end “I'm waking up baby; now tell me, are you okay?”- I take that to mean that she is realizing how much she is affecting her partner’s mood and wants lighten things up. She is basically asking at this point if there is a chance to make it better. |
