10cc – I'm Not In Love Lyrics | 8 years ago |
Have always enjoyed the unique sounds... the melody... growing up with this song. Now thinking on the poignant tale told by the lyrics, it could very well be a guy's mockery of how some GIRLS play with love. Think about it — those words are more how teenage and young-adult women toy with guys. WOMEN are ones who usually say those things! So it becomes fun mockery to sing it in a song. Maybe the songwriter had his heart broken by such twisted wishy washy nonsense. |
Billy Joel – She's Always A Woman Lyrics | 10 years ago |
I disagree with the Shakespearean comparison. When I hear Billy Joel's first-person voice and narrative, I don't hear him describe what he alone loves about her. Instead, he portrays her as a selfish, spoiled, temperamental, lying brat and worse. He reveals nothing virtuous in her personality, morals or spirit. What is beauty? If it's not in the eye of the beholder (or sang in a love song as such), then it has to be mere physical or sexual attraction alone. |
David Cassidy – I Think I Love You Lyrics | 10 years ago |
Cheesy lyrics! (the song is in my favorites collection. go figure) |
Burton Cummings – Stand Tall Lyrics | 10 years ago |
Awesome melody and musicality. From the get-go it's a build up to shout the "STAND TALL" chorus. But in whole, the meaning of the song seems to be a melancholic self-beating. He really can't be telling anybody else -- except himself -- to "stand tall." |
Starland Vocal Band – Afternoon Delight Lyrics | 10 years ago |
Such a sweet melody that sticks in your head! I loved the tune as a kid. Now, in my older, wiser, cynical years, I'm laughing at such a silly cheery song about SEX, SEX, SEX and more SEX. |
Olivia Newton-John – Let Me Be There Lyrics | 10 years ago |
Contrast her "let me take you through that wonderland that only two can share" and Tone Loc's "body start slappin' from doin' the wild thing" Same meaning. |
Tone Loc – Wild Thing Lyrics | 10 years ago |
If free-roaming alpha gorillas in any jungle can sing, they would sing this song. Besides food, they always want to do the "wild thing." |
ABBA – Fernando Lyrics | 10 years ago |
Mentioning the Rio Grande could mean only a few wars in American-Mexican history. "Can you hear the drums" and "roar of guns and cannons" then place it in a very specific time period. There's really no squirming around it, regardless of what the songwriter(s) said afterwards. |
ABBA – Fernando Lyrics | 10 years ago |
All caps is poor writing. |
ABBA – Fernando Lyrics | 10 years ago |
"Irregardless" is a meaningless double negative and a poor word to start your comment. |
Bee Gees – Nights On Broadway Lyrics | 10 years ago |
Only one line in the whole song can possibly be contrived to mean anything about stalking -- and it takes quite some contriving to think of stalking. So I disagree. |
Bee Gees – Nights On Broadway Lyrics | 10 years ago |
It's about stage performers doing a big musical in New York's Broadway district. They come out "singin' them love songs… to that crazy crazy town." So while waiting in a dark backstage area in a line-up among so many unknown performers ("in a room full of strangers"), one of them falls in love with the person in front of them. The guy (or girl) has to display his best emotions on stage, so he blames his lustful feelings on the Nights on Broadway! It's a simple story if you piece it all together. |
Eagles – Hotel California Lyrics | 10 years ago |
This is one of my favorites of all time, in any genre! Of particular significance, I think, is the guitar lick at the end. It's one of the ultimate pieces in the entire era of Rock. And so it's particular sad that such musicality is now gone. The late generations are not building upon the best of the past. |
Eagles – Hotel California Lyrics | 10 years ago |
No doubt it's a metaphor. What else can it possibly be? But then, lo and behold, I've actually visited a small business establishment in Southern California called Hotel California. Go figure. |
Bee Gees – To Love Somebody Lyrics | 10 years ago |
Grossly overused cheap colloquialisms! "You don't know what it's like, baby, to love somebody the way I love you…" So is he insulting his "baby" by telling (her) that she doesn't know what it's like to love somebody? Very idiotic. But good melody. It takes a dumb ear to enjoy it. |

Pink Floyd – Another Brick in the Wall, Pt. 2 Lyrics | 11 years ago |
I was in high school when this song came out. And wow, was it embraced by the students! It was like a national student anthem. |
Pink Floyd – Another Brick in the Wall, Pt. 2 Lyrics | 11 years ago |
I don't notice any anti-feminine tone at all. You might be juxtaposing the pattern that most British teachers, historically, are women. It's definitely a British tone – "if you don't eat yer meat, you can't have any pudding..." |
KT Tunstall – Suddenly I See Lyrics | 11 years ago |
If the lyrics are taken only for their words (as opposed to the history of the writer or writers), it's simply the joyous discovery of being lesbian. The only other possibility is a story of a girl who wants to grow up to be a global fashion model. But then why would an admiring little girl feel like a "big strong tower" when she thinks the model is looking at her from the page of a magazine?! No. It's not career love. Not a man's love of a woman. Not a love of a daughter. It's girl on girl – a revelation of being lesbian. Regardless of JT Tunstall being one. |
Ace of Base – All That She Wants Lyrics | 11 years ago |
Exactly how I hear it too. And especially nasty how it's expressed by another woman – the vocals of Ace of Base, who, oddly, don't look the part ether way. Not that looks matter, but since we're calling a duck for a duck... |
Elton John – Someone Saved My Life Tonight Lyrics | 11 years ago |
...and then he became a complete homosexual! (from comments below) Elton John is one of my favorites, and this song in particular. I enjoy it more for the melodic range than anything else. The lyrics do account for a fabulous composition all around. |

Barbra Streisand – The Way We Were Lyrics | 11 years ago |
In retrospect, wow, what a landmark song. Now reading along as I listen again, it's amazing how short are the lyrics. So few words. Streisand performed it like a true master – extending herself almost beyond then back to the softest whisper. Her singing brings out the full impact of the meaning. And a very powerful meaning indeed. Any song about memories can become timeless. The melodic impact of Streisand's rendition pins it at the very top. |
Lulu – To Sir With Love Lyrics | 11 years ago |
If I didn't know it was from a movie soundtrack (and with associated characters), I would think it's rather disturbing – a school girl expressing love to an older man? And it's her teacher?! But then it's also about "my best friend" –Â so yeah sure. Whatever. I think the melody and tone (instead of the lyrics) make 90% of the listening quality. It's one of my favorites despite the meaning of the lyrics. |
Olivia Newton-John – I Honestly Love You Lyrics | 11 years ago |
Oh how I miss my youth! As a young man, I was always looking for a girlfriend like ONJ. Maybe I still am. LOL This song reminds me again of just how rare is her beauty of innocence and sweetness. It's probably the only plain direct "I love you" song sang with such melodious tones and plain honest emotions. She wears her heart on her sleeve, giving everything and asking for nothing in return. No dancing around the issue of love. There are very few voices in all of history who can portray such simple, maybe even naive, openness. It's all the beauty of a young woman. Without any twists. It's like the song was especially written just for her (although it's not). Definitely a timeless piece. No other singer could've pulled it off. |
Olivia Newton-John – If You Love Me (Let Me Know) Lyrics | 11 years ago |
One of my favorite sweet songs. However, often unwritten and unmentioned is the weird backup vocals for bass. Weird not in lyrical wording, but in tonal melody. Imagine separately listening to it. The guy is almost like mocking the clean high voice of Olivia, but it's actually a good contrast. There's a moment when he goes "oooh why" and "take eeeeeh." LOL |
Fleetwood Mac – Go Your Own Way Lyrics | 11 years ago |
There are two ways I enjoy it. One, it's a very rhythmic rock and roll tune with pristine percussions and guitar. For melody and tune, it's one of the best. There's the classic guitar lick that's so sorely missing in later mishmashing of banalities called rock. Two, this is an angry song! If I'm in a breakup with a former lover, dang, this song says it perfectly. You can go your own way! Combine the two, and it's singing-songwriting genius. Bravo Lindsey & Stevie for sustaining your romantic tensions! LOL |
Heart – Straight On Lyrics | 11 years ago |
First, I think Ann Wilson is one of the best female voices ever in any genre. Tremendous range. Second, this was "hard rock" in my days of youth, and with female lead vocals, it's that much more an impact on a young man. Third, OMG, she's so direct in her desire! She's coming STRAIGHT ON for me! Gotta love it. |
Elvis Presley – Suspicious Minds Lyrics | 11 years ago |
This is my ONLY Elvis song. And in comparison to his other stuff, it's almost anti-Elvis. It's like a deep, thoughtful, relevant ballad. It's his last and best No.1. Aside from the masterful rendition by The King, I love the backup vocals, all the complementary instrumentals, the spot-on melodies perfectly evoking the emotions, even the fade-out-then-fade-back effects at the end. It's definitely a classic. |
Engelbert Humperdinck – After the Lovin' Lyrics | 11 years ago |
Purely a man's perspective. Can women ever fully appreciate the meaning of this song? Surely *some* men become completely NON compassionate after sexual climax. Yep. That's what it's about. |
Jackson Browne – The Pretender Lyrics | 11 years ago |
Another one of my favorites for melody and meaning. But it seems rather over-the-top in speaking on behalf of the dead-end workers in rural small town America. Consider "I'm gonna be a happy idiot, and struggle for the legal tender." Can the poor and dreary really be so sarcastic and self-deprecating? Otherwise, it's plainly a fictional depiction instead of a ballad sang from a first person's account. |
Terry Jacks – Seasons in the Sun Lyrics | 11 years ago |
It's one of my favorite tunes, if mostly for musicality. I've always thought it was about a young American draftee going off to fight in the Vietnam War. My recent research reveals it to be a loose adaptation of a sarcastic theatrical French chanson about marital misfortune. The timing of the adaptation (late '60s), however, still points to much melancholy of the obligations of war, especially considering the changes in the English version. |
