| I think this song is about being free and happy with someone you love even though times are tough at home. I think the singer feels safe and as if he can escape from his problems when he is with this other person, friend or girlfriend or whatever. The reason I interpret it this way is because the bridge seems to be him getting a phone call with bad news - makes him go silent - and he has to go home now to face the storm, or face the troubles. | |

I think this song is about going home to visit an old high school friend. He went to school at McMaster which is in Hamilton and his friend picks him up after being holed up all day. I'm guessing this friend is something of an introvert, reading all day and listening to music. These two are good friends and share their tastes in music and books and that's a way they can connect. This friend seems to be stuck at home with his mother in a "blue-collar" job - which is sometimes considered lower class than "white-collar" business jobs. I think the singer is hinting that this friend is brilliant but not motivated and is not reaching his potential. Maybe this friend had a rough breakup which is why he got depressed and unmotivated. I had a friend like this. It would make sense considering the references to him playing music now because before "she could never stand to listen" This is what I think the song is about. Very relatable since I am also in University and have had similar experiences. |

I think this song is about reconnecting with old high school friends who never really moved on once they graduated, and meeting someone new in the same situation. I know when you're young people want to sleep around and they make mistakes with each other which I think he is referring to in the first verse. This new girl he met seems pretty self-confident but its clear that there's something tough happening in her life and from the reference to visiting her mother and no longer having someone saying they'll stay up waiting for her, I think maybe her mom was sick and that's why she had to return home. All the while the singer is there for her and trying to cheer her up, being silly and talking in southern accents etc. That's my interpretation but I'm sure it could mean a lot of other things to other people as well. It is such a catchy song I love it! |

This song breaks my heart and better yet makes me FEEL like I have a broken heart. It's amazing how Coldplay can influence how you feel with their music. They are truly amazing artists and can make the simplest messages the most beautiful things I've ever heard. This song, as mentioned in previous comments, could be about a very bad breakup, or just about losing someone in general. Hits home for sure. |
