This is a great song, but sorta sad. To me, it's about a guy who wants to enjoy life, but he also wants security so fear stops him from living. Instead, he goes through life being the loyal friend anyone can count on, the guy who doesn't complain about stuff, and always asks for permission before doing anything. In the live version, Bob also sings about not making enemies. In other words, he's alive but he's not really living. And I agree with Diogenes' interpretation. In school, he's the nice boy that's friends with the girls but doesn't get play. Later in life, he's the guy is taken advantage of by co-workers for the same reason. |
