Michael Schenker – On and On Lyrics 10 years ago
Kind of brutal, but I like to think the song is about suicide. Obscurely; poetically. “A kiss of the wind” is an abstract gun shot to the head that starts the song, then "life” moves on. Behind the windows of his eyes, is the winter of our discontent, and if you understand the Shakespearean source, deep depression 'glorified' by being over, done. The 'reason' for it can only be found in his eyes/mind, but life moves on. Both the world moving on AND his life moving on to its final resolution. The solo being an abstract *glorious* unique interpretation of one's life, beginning to end. Aurally, one of the best metal songs ever made. I'm taking this 'flier' here on the lyrics.

Boz Scaggs – Lowdown Lyrics 12 years ago
A groupie gal is running around telling everyone she's Boz's girlfriend. She has no tact, and takes the gifts for granted – as if they will be getting married. “Hey boy”, is his rational-self saying that he really should tell her the sad truth, that she is just a fling.

He's rich and on top of the world – can pay cash. Can turn on the charm and get what he wants with ease.
But doing that gets him at odds with the girl, and life. But like the groupie girl, he too is taking his success for granted, and needs better grounding.

Get on back to town – means stop traveling the world (London, Sweden, etc.) and get back closer to his more humble roots back in his hometown. It's figurative and literal. Enjoy normal life.

Being a highfalutin rock star (or joining the rat-race in general) vs. being a relatively normal person – the latter being preferable. Who gave him that idea? Rhetorical question – can't be answered.

At first glance I assumed lightly that it was a white boy more or less critiquing from afar obscure pimp hooker dynamics in an urban blight ridden city – but reading the lyrics carefully and knowing a scant bit about Scaggs, I think it was simply about his own situation at the time. (He and David Paich actually.) Lowdown was the band's favorite song of that breakout album, but no one ever thought it would become a single, much less win the Grammy for best song in 1976.

I'd like to think Joe Walsh's, Life's Been Good (1978), was inspired a bit by the lyrics.

Gojira – Explosia Lyrics 12 years ago
Jealousy will crush you to the bones
Unless you open up and let it go [rage-mosh-emote]

I've only seen too much of it
I'm bursting open while you set the tone [he's moshing – you're straight, “Keeping up with the Joneses”, bourgeois – etc.]

You ignored this fury too long, I explode [you're a square – I rage. Society (religious institutions) suppressed our animal side too long - and it's coming to an end right now.]

Bring back to life this anger, let it grow [get in touch with your animalistic base self]

Put aside mind traps and false beliefs [morals, taboos, the feeling that headbanging is a bit to 1980s for you - etc.]

These heavy weights created pull you down [weights of the world.. morals, taboos, mortgages, etc.]

The mask you wear is falling
Try on and watch it fall [try on, as in continue trying to fake bland civility, but it's no use, change will come]

Hands down you feel the moment [you're into it – hands down fact – especially after that last breakdown...!!]

Releasing out a lifetime [just like scream 'primal therapy' from the 60s]

All prayers to these gods [gods plural – the ancients – the current also being ancient – all of them together - all the prayers to all the gods over all time - were what I am doing now when moshing hard to this song - all those emotions at once]

While the tide is growing high [the tide of emotion?, or possibly change – in a post gods era?]

Will you make us stronger [Darwin, who killed the gods, invoked – will the gods abide to the modern logic?]

When you strike us down? [We die. The end.]

Judas Priest – Metal Gods Lyrics 12 years ago
Rob Halford is gay. He was into underground homosexual bar culture in the era of this album. That’s where the whole leather/motorcycle thing came from. He came out as gay on MTV in 1998.

Most of the song is self explanatory once you know that.

“Iron feet” is obscure reference to Daniel 2:33 — living in two worlds — dreaming of a man. (More flamboyantly, “Dragging iron feet” might mean gays in drag marching through the street.)

“Disease” — yeah, that’s an unfortunate irony. AIDS was first discovered the year after this release.

“Fearing for our lives” he really says “LIES” — he annunciates that pretty clearly, to my ears, and it makes perfect sense.

“Death” is Shakespearean era euphemism for orgasm. The last stanza is literally about receiving a blow-job.

All those silly teen boys who loved Priest in the 80s and 90s had NO IDEA they were chanting gay mantras all those years - myself included. [No-gay.] In 2013 it’s hilarious. In 1980 I probably would have gotten into a fistfight with someone who pointed it out to me.

Devo – Girl U Want Lyrics 12 years ago
The song is full of euphemism for getting stoned (or, “getting high on life”, if you prefer.) Like a dream, or a great song, or a woman, you can’t really express in words what is so great about it (on the tip of your tongue) because it’s temporarily euphoric beyond words — just like that girl you want. The subtle point to be made is to just give up, don’t worry if you’re fat or a geek or whatever (see orig music video) because pleasuring burning (and watching mindless TV) is “just the girl you want” (or, “just relax and dig the moment”, if you prefer.) But, it’s delivered in a jittery paranoid voice; a kind of artistic “untrustworthy narrator” sketchy tone, and over stylized … to my mind implying irony/sarcasm, that what you think is great right now is just illusory emotion and you’re being lead down the garden path (perhaps, like all young people are — so that’s okay.) Indeed, this silly (but great) pop song is “just the girl you want”, told to us via a kind of hypnotic command. (Especially to an audience half stoned or generally looking for alternative ways of thinking or seeing artistic expression and performance.)
