| Florence + the Machine – Never Let Me Go Lyrics | 12 years ago |

I believe this could easily be linked to Virginia Woolf, but also to the book The Awakening by Kate Chopin. (Spoilers for the book) In the book, the main character, Edna, finds herself miserable and struggling to conform with the way society deems she should be. She is pressured to not be herself, but to be what others say she should. She watches as a bird flies over the ocean, then crashes into the sea. Taking off her clothing, she begins to walk into the sea. She feels like “some new-born creature, opening its eyes in a familiar world that it had never known.” She ponders of the past, but eventually fully gives into the sea and dies. Granted that is a brief summary and a lot of symbolism of this suicide is left out in it, this song did remind me of when I read this. There are two main interpretations from the book (that can be similar with this song). One being that she committed suicide as her failure to deal with and conform to society. Another that she was essentially victorious by not conforming and becoming a slave to society. She mentions that those around her intend to “to drag her into the soul’s slavery for the rest of her days.” So she freed herself. |

| Lady GaGa – Scheiße Lyrics | 12 years ago |

"I don't speak German but I can if you like." When she says this, then pretty much speaks jibberish, I interpreted this as her basically showing that a lot of women will put on a front (a mask) and pretend to be something they are not to please others around them (in the context of this song, to please men). Love is objectified, By what men say is right Scheiße, Scheiße be mine Bullshit be mine Blonde high heeled feminist, Enlisting femmes for this Express your women kind, fight for your rights This is basically the meat of the song, in my opinion. It describes the whole point of it. "Love is objectified by what men say is right." Basically saying that men (in a male dominated society) are determining what is right in love. Women must remain truthful, faithful, loyal, and pure, while society says that men can go watch porn, go to strip clubs, some sects of society even condone men cheating or treating their partner poorly. "Blonde high-heeled feminist, Enlisting femmes for this, express your woman kind, fight for your rights." Basically saying that she, along with other feminists of sorts, are encouraging other women to stand up and fight for equality in relationships. To not be the only gender held to extreme standards and damned when they fail... while the opposite gender gets away with expressing their sexuality and can even get praised for lying, cheating, sleeping around, etc. I don't think she's bashing being sexual, but moreso, bashing that the genders can't be equal in regards to sexuality. How women are damned for being sexual in any way, but men are praised for it (overall). But more importantly, how you don't need the approval of the opposite sex to feel and be a strong human being. You just need to be content with who you are as a person. |

| Radiohead – How to Disappear Completely Lyrics | 12 years ago |

I interpreted this song similarly, but differently than some of the comments below. I have really bad anxiety, to the point that some days it is extremely hard to function. There seems to be nothing that can take your mind off of what is bothering you (why you are anxious - fears, breakups, life changes, etc). You go to parties, clubs, events, and celebrate holidays to try to distract yourself, but they never work. Yet society tells you that you have to keep living and being a "normal person," so you go through the motions like a ghost or empty shell when it'd just be easier if you disappeared. |

| Kishi Bashi – I Am the Antichrist to You Lyrics | 13 years ago |

nvm i think its abt a destructive relationship “Who are you? Who am I to you? I am the antichrist to you fallen from the sky with grace into your arms race” The “arms race” is basically the fuel of their fire for fighting. She is constantly arguing with him ‘cause she’s upset over something he did or didn’t do. Shes building her arms/weapons because of him. “Lucid lovers me and you a deal of matchless value I was always quick to admit defeat empty statements of bones and meat” Their love is empty, yet somehow they are a good match. Basically their experience together has lead, what could have been a good relationship, to turn into ashes, despite having so much in common. He admits defeat because he doesn’t want to fight anymore. He says what he can to make her feel better and/or shut up. “And my heart it shook with fear I'm a coward behind a shield and spear Take this sword and throw it far Let it shine under the morning star” He’s a coward because he never told her the truth and never told her how he felt. He just sat down and took the beatings. She disarmed him, basically. “Let it shine under the morning star” says to me that a new morning is coming. “One for my heart and two for show three tears for all the souls below One day we made them into figurines burned them all with all my favorite things” This is the only part I’m confused by a bit. I took it as he really loved the girl that he’s in the relationship with, but he gave up on her and left. Finding other women didn’t please him, though. He was still in love with her. He burned (or got rid of) all the things that reminded him of her (photos, etc). “Who are you? Who am I to you? I am the antichrist to you“ A lot of people who go through failed relationships view the other person as a horrible being. Usually that’s all they see while in the relationship. She’s making him out to be something he’s not, but he doesn’t know how to portray himself differently ‘cause he doesn’t have the courage. |
