One of the biggest misconceptions about this song is that it is free form .In fact it was written specifically in answer to the Velvet Underground`s "Heroin". Hence the repeated chorus of "searching for my bloodflow" NOT "brother".This was in direct answer to the chorus of "Heroin" "I`ve been searching for my mainline" . I personally talked about this with both Damo and Michael Karoli(R.I.P). It`s also in The Can book,so Anti Jehovahs.........you look foolish! |

It`s hard for me to express how I feel about this song 27 years after I first bought the album it appears on.It`s still in my top 5 albums of all time and this is the epitome of why. Tom Verlaine`s lyrics are genius.Why can`t current musicians take note!!Write a poem first,then try and fit a tune over it! Like all the best songs/poems,it`s not about anything per se,but expresses a feeling,a soul,a notion.... He was going out with Patti smith at the time and I think they inspired each other to ethereal heights of poetic license. The only other thing to add is that I remember the first friend I played it to(he was a Hendrix and Blue oyster Cult fan) said "wow who is this?" |

MES himself said in an interview that this song did scupper a potential Motown deal,but I think he was scamming the journalist.In my opinion................. This is THE fall song.Twin drummers beat out a primal Jaki Libezeit beat while the Hanley bros riff like the ghost of Roky Erikson.MES just free forms lyrics about the appaling situation that Britain found itself in under Thatcher`s worst excesses. "This is the home of the vain" .....indeed! It`s also about the football hooligan problem and the death throes of the British manufacturing industry. "I`ve never felt better in my life" How any American can make head or tail of MES`s lyrics is beyond me.It`s hard if you don`t come from Salford!!! |
