This song has a pretty simple meaning- It's a caution about the way you let yourself be seen in front of other people, and the facade that you put up that really isn't you. We worry so much about others' acceptance that we don't let ourselves just be us, and end up regretting it. |

While I've never been able to understand exactly what this song is about, I find it interesting how the 'eight' described in the song sound a lot like Phillip Pullman's angels from His Dark Materials. Especially the lines "You cannot see them when it is light/This is the reason we go at night". The angels in the book can only be seen at night (unless they are very powerful). Whenever I listen to the song, I think of the angels' longing for the feel of a body, and the loneliness that they endure in being immortal beings. I'm not saying that this is what the band was describing, it's just what I picture when I listen to it. |

At first this song is just really catchy... But then you listen more and it has these really freakin' interesting lyrics. Beck is amazing. Of course, the combination of the natural disasters, icecaps melting, and gamma rays (presumably from nuclear bombs) speak of the end of the world and humanity. And the cactus crown is like a funky allusion to the crown of thorns in the bible, telling of the fall of man. The dot-dot-dot is probably talking about an ellipsis, but also sounds to me like blood dripping on the girl's brow. And the "she speaks inside a cloud" is almost like being in a trance, allowing her to tell the future of this great catastrophe. It's interesting that he uses the word "countenance". Because it could refer to both the girl's facial expression, and her realization that the apocalypse is actually possible, and will be brought on by man himself. But what's the meaning of "Your brains are bored like a refugee"? Is it the dissociative outlook of people in modern society? |

For me the importance of this song is in the 'we'. The fact that the people in the song do all of these things together shows that they have a bond- How many people are willing to break into mobile homes with you? Go out in stormy weather? It sounds like these people are so in sync that they'd have to be lovers, soul mates, or best friends. "And that's the way to my heart"... Even when life is tough they have a way of doing things that only they understand, and may be wrong, but that's the way they get by. |
