| Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young – Chicago Lyrics | 5 years ago |

In concert the line, "Rules and regulations, who needs them? Open up the door!" is changed to go: "Rules and regulations, who needs them? Throw them out the door!" This is a much stronger change in a great song. |

| Roger Waters – When We Were Young Lyrics | 6 years ago |
|
Thank you Anders, When we listen to a song or read poem or story we often do so in the context of our own experiences and they can shape the way we encounter a text. What results makes places like this so interesting. This is a good example. When I was in college [high school for our American friends] I was on the receiving end of some rather unpleasant people and bullied for my first years. Hence the way I interpreted with the words. Without the bullying I might have seen it differently. Another clue is Waters tone of voice when he says "I'm still ugly, you're still fat!" It sounds like he's addressing someone he didn't like. |

| A man who married and since discovered himself as a gay man regrets hurting her but must go out and realize who he is: my interpretation. I'm glad I never put anyone in her position. | |
| Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young – Chicago Lyrics | 7 years ago |
|
Fotunately no one was killed during the police riot outside the Democratic Party National Convention at Chicago in 1969 but many were injured and arrested. The 'brother' who was ''bound and gagged and chain to a chair" was Black Panther leader Bobby Seale. This was during the trials held later. When this is sung in concert they usually sing 'Throw them out the door" instead of "Open up the door". It seems to make more sense and the recorded version was probably to appease the record company. |

| Roger Waters – When We Were Young Lyrics | 8 years ago |
|
"we could piss up the boys boat wall" this makes no sense. however this does: "we could piss up the boys bog wall" bog is English schoolboy slang for toilet and the line describes the upmanship games played by boys when they are young. The next section captures the unease and expectation of puberty. "Where are you now?" Roger asks of the boy who bullied him at college. "I'm still afraid" "Who gives a fuck, it's never really over." This poignantly expresses the lasting damage bullying has on its victim. This ring true to me. |

| U2 – 4th of July Lyrics | 10 years ago |
| It is a sound scape of guitar loops and sounds desolate. The Title and sound scape evokes a post nuclear war landscape. | |
| U2 – Drunk Chicken/America Lyrics | 10 years ago |
| For those unfamiliar This track was recorded during the Joshua Tree sessions [I think] Drunk Chicken ids the instrumental track of drum and guitar over which Bono recites the first third of Allen Ginsberg's poem America. Ginsberg wrote America in January 1956. | |

| The Police – Walking In Your Footsteps Lyrics | 12 years ago |
|
there is a live version that has the following... It's really our distinction to laugh at our extinction, but you really have to think hard when you're walking in your graveyard. Fukushima is making this resonate. |

| The Police – Walking In Your Footsteps Lyrics | 12 years ago |
|
I saw the Police back in '81 but this song flew under my radar in a time when I was gravely concerned about our species attraction to weapons of mass destruction. Only recently did I discover this song and understand Stings' meaning in it but I also have embraced it as a warning against our inactivity to control climate change. When seen this way Walking in Your Footsteps becomes highly relevant. |

| The Byrds – Draft Morning Lyrics | 12 years ago |
|
a brilliantly crafted anti war message using a slow lulling atmosphere to convey the peace and contentment of a young man lying in bed on a beautiful morning. But the world has business ready for him and he has his card to an appointment with the army. His number has been drawn The mid section herald by trumpet and snare is his contemplation of what they want him to do. But he decides "no!" and stays in his bed. I agree it is underated and left of the Byrds compilation but we can celebrate it and own it war IS over if you want it. |

| Robbie Williams – Advertising Space Lyrics | 12 years ago |
| Elvis got on the "War on drugs" bandwagon getting a meeting with Nixon. He also didn't like Lennon. Nixon gave him a badge and made him a special agent. | |

One problem: Didn't Elvis die before Brando? Michael Jackson's death was sad and in my view 3rd degree suicide. |

| Roger Waters – The Tide is Turning (After Live Aid) Lyrics | 13 years ago |
|
I remember this when we were beginning to feel optimistic that we had stared down WW3 and avoided it. I listened again and it nearly had me in tears because we didn't turn a corner but hurtled of into a new bunch of shit : the balkans, Iraq, 9/11, Bush jr and two more wars without end. |

Stallone made his name also in a series of Godaweful movies called Rambo. Hollywood war propaganda. in short. |

| Neil Young – After the Garden Lyrics | 13 years ago |
|
'After The Garden' the Garden is where we live. The Shadow men are the CIA and DHSS. The sneaking war is the one started against Iraq and Afghanistan, maybe disquiet at the explanations of 9/11 given by the Bush government. Yes it can be read as a warning against nuclear war but I see it as being similar to Walking in your Footsteps by the Police. However I think it is about climate change/global warming which seems to be escalating. Google "Permian Extinction" for how the garden can be lost. |
