This is a deeply profound song, and I am inspired every time I hear it. It is a song of love --not romantic love but Divine Love and deep spiritual yearning. The singer is appealing to the Goddess for release from delusion of the everyday world. The Goddess is an embodiment of the Divine Mother. Her dance is the "cosmic dance" that keeps the universe in motion in Hindu mythology. She is the giver of all and provider of all, including enlightenment. The singer is "aglow with the taste of the demons driven out" meaning that the attachments to worldly attractions have worn off--"and happily replaced with the presence of real love the only one who saves" And so he begins to yearn for real love, Divine love, as the only thing that saves (saves = enlightenment in the Buddhist sense, moksha in the Hindu sense, or salvation in the Christian sense) It is the only thing that lasts, and the only thing worth living for. The singer has "tasted all the wines a half a billion times" means that he has had many, many experiences (and lifetimes) of worldly pleasures, which, while may have been pleasant, didn't bring any lasting happiness. With this realization came the great wisdom that that fleeting pleasures will never bring him true happiness. He has gone through many, many cycles of birth, death, and rebirth (samsara in the eastern traditions) and this has "sickened" him because it is an endless treadmill that can never lead to real happiness. "The karmic ocean dried up and leaves no trace" means that the singer has paid off his karmic debts and there is nothing left to hold him on the treadmill of "eons of war and lifetimes". He is ready to break free--he is ready to be enlightened. He prays to the goddess to "show me what this life is for". His deep dissatisfaction has lead him to realize that there is more to life than what he experiences with the senses. He has been missing something all along. He has arrived at the great wisdom that he will continue to suffer unless he is released from the vicious cycle. "The stillness in your eyes convinces me that I don't know a thing" means that although he has had all this experience from lifetime to lifetime, none of it has led to deep inner peace--the peace that he sees in her eyes and yearns for himself. He knows she has something better, and she can release him from the bondage that all beings suffer from. So he begs to dance with the Goddess--to dance with her is to attain release from suffering--to dance with her is to attain enlightenment. To be able to live in the world and not be attached to the world is to have the inner peace of Buddha, Jesus, and the great saints and sages that have been liberated from the bonds of the mind and worldly attachment. Every living soul, one at a time, will come to the same realization that the singer has-- and will drop "sickened to her shores", seeking Truth at the feet of the Divine. |
