David Gray – Over My Head Lyrics 2 years ago
Picture the person that you still love but can\'t be with. The one you have a rough history with that left you gutted. Picture crossing paths with them, picture them reaching out to you, picture you reaching out to them... this song is about that initial moment of reestablished contact. You are hit with a flood of emotion and sentiment and you are drawn into them even though you know it\'ll be the death of you again. Like walking into a roaring ocean.

Radiohead – House of Cards Lyrics 2 years ago
This song is blunt af and shockingly so. Not only is he calling out the life that he made with someone and the life SHE made with someone by referring to those relationships as a “house of cards” that could easily be blown over because they’re that useless, but he’s telling her he doesn’t give af if them being together is worth that kind of destruction. Maybe the blow out and the blow back would rip them apart but what choice do they have when there’s sparks between them of an even larger voltage. Whatever the blow back would be, it’s not even going to be felt or noticed compared to the explosion that would be between them. And if that’s not enough? He’s saying she knows it too and the only thing holding this entire universe in such a precarious pre-explosive position is her denial and oh her ears are burning from the pit of wildfire he ignites within her with these words.

Bruce Springsteen – Tougher Than The Rest Lyrics 2 years ago
He's saying that the other guys won't last because they can't take the heat that comes with love but that he can. Other may be better looking, stronger, rich or a sweet talker, but they are too weak to weather the demands of a life long love. He's got what she needs.

Lana Del Rey – 13 Beaches Lyrics 6 years ago
To me this is about someone who has always had a problem connecting to people because something haunts her and she blames a very obvious breakup on this fact. The relationship wasn't good for her though and she didn't want it to end but she knew it had to. With this relationship out of the way she was able to find peace and solace in the fact that she can't connect... that's what the beach is... but still what else can she do but sit in this paradise and wonder how the other person is? She has some serious cognitive dissonance when she realises that her peace comes at the price of what she needs most to feel alive in this world... a connection, and in particular, to that other person.

This is about the bloody end of a relationship, a sinking ship and one's total devotion to it and the end any way.

Kings of Leon – WALLS Lyrics 7 years ago
It's fairly obvious to say this song is about loving someone and having all your walls come down but it's a bit more than that.

I think he's saying that the walls come down slowly and in pieces and with great force and explosions. That sometimes, you have to get your heart torn out before you realise that you have walls and that they are a detriment. Sometimes you need your heart dragged out of them like a king with his kingdom sacked and burnt to the ground before you can move forward.

The Neighbourhood – Sweater Weather Lyrics 7 years ago
I think this song is how he loves someone but he's coming to the realisation and grief that they can't be together. The lyrics kind of say that but what says it the most is that she's cold but he doesn't give her his sweater. Instead he can only hold her hands and keep her kind of warm by bringing them into the sleeves of his sweater. That says it all.

Hozier – Arsonist's Lullaby Lyrics 7 years ago
First - Teaspill - you are said exactly what I came here to say but you said it more eloquently than I ever could. Thank you for that. Thank you!

I just wanted to add that as far as the chorus goes, I think the point is that morality isn't what we hear from the law, it's not what we hear from religion, it's not what we hear from our parents or from society. All of these voices, are just voices because no matter what we do, there is a little good and a little bad in all of us. Sometimes, no matter what we do, no matter our intentions, we still produce negative, harmful results. How could this be when law, religion, parents, told us that THIS was the way to behave? It's because this is just how it is. This IS life. This IS the human experience. All you have is what drives you and where it needs to take you. You can't deny that part of you, you can't deny the good and you can't deny the bad. When you try to tame those demons, that is when you are most likely to cause damage to yourself and to those around you. You can't deny them, you can't erase them, you can't extinguish their fire in pursuit of keeping the good alive. When you acknowledge them, when you live in accordance with being aware that they are there, when you keep them on a leash, that is when you can do the best you can do in the human experience. And the best is still somewhere between good for some and bad for some, there's nothing you can do about that. You still have to go through life and let it take you where you need to go.

Brilliant. Brilliant. Brilliant song.

Damien Rice – Delicate Lyrics 9 years ago
I think its pretty straight forward that this song is about having female lover that one should not have. What intrigued me the most was the word Hallelujah. The word has always be attributed to an exclamation of joy and rejoicement, with religious implications that God has provided us with something wonderful. He clearly sees this woman as wonderous and meant for him and once believed that she felt the same but now she doesnt seem to be indicating this.

Also, it could be a reference to the song Hallelujah that Leonard Cohen did which was about King David and the affair he had with a married woman by the name of Bathesheba. Their affair was legendary.

This song is beautifully written and played. One of my most favourites.

Florence + the Machine – Never Let Me Go Lyrics 10 years ago
Whoa, everyone makes it sound so dark.

She's talking about loving someone despite being afraid. She's terrified to be so in love with someone and perhaps thats because she was hurt in the past, so her instinct is to resist. But she wont resist any more, she's giving in to that person and THAT is devotion... it's overwhelming like an ocean pulling you under.

Am I the only who thinks this is from the perspective of "the girl's" lover or friend? I think its about a woman who was in an abusive marriage and she ended up killing him for it and now she's running from the law.

Lana is comparing the love she has for someone to cocaine. I think she feels high when he is near and she knows he isn't good for her, and it will likely end badly but she'll go to him anyway. I think its part of her rockabilly, lolita, modern street girl but vintage vibe.

The National – Don't Swallow the Cap Lyrics 10 years ago
This song is about that moment when you know you've lost and you've lost gravely but you feel the urge to carry on with hope. You're grieving and in pain but despite that you have faith in yourself because if you didn't have that you'd have nothing. Its not so much a message about having hope and faith and seeing the bright light at the end of the tunnel as much as it is just a comment on that moment where pain blends with hope. Don't choke. Carry on. Let go, let it be, nevermind.

The National – Daughters of the SoHo Riots Lyrics 11 years ago
I also wanted to add that it seems as though he is given to the idea of running away with his love and leaving their lives behind. In the beginning he says he has her good clothes in the car, her dreams and her teeth marks. When almost nothing is left of a person, teeth will remain (they dont burn or decompose quite as fast) so teeth are ofte used to identify people, even bite marks are used to identify who did the biting. I think his point with this is that he knows who she is. Out of everyone in the world he knows her best. Of course, he knows this idea to run away is not going to happen but he entertains the notion.

The National – Daughters of the SoHo Riots Lyrics 11 years ago
I think the title of this song is referring to the children the singer would have had with his soul mate had they not broken up and had to remain apart for the rest of their lives. These fictional "soho riots" were the turbulent times in their relationship that ultimately caused the final split. The rest of the song goes on to lament the loss of this kind of love in his life and how this lamentation is shared and discussed between them despite that both of them probably have new people in their lives. He knows that he must move on but he is holding on to her on an emotional level because he knows he will never have love like that again. He holds on even though it hurts.

Richard Ashcroft – Brave New World Lyrics 11 years ago
I think when he says "brave new world" he is referring to life without someone that he loves dearly. I think this song is a parting wish fueled by love and emotion. I think he is forced into this new world without her, is afraid of it but knows there is nothing he can do about it so all he can do at the moment is wish that he could change things but he can't and if he can't see her again then he hopes to see her when they die... or perhaps its a touch of hope... as in, once they've both been launched into this new world without each other they'll have their adventures but ultimately end up back to where they both came from.

Damien Rice – Dogs Lyrics 11 years ago
I think it is about two people who love one another but neither one says it. The first part of the song is his perspective, then hers, then the last part is back to his. Because neither of them said anything about their feelings she moved on to someone else and this person isnt good for her. He wonders how she could love someone like that and not him... he just doesnt know that she loves him as well.

Damien Rice – I Remember Lyrics 11 years ago
I think this is very much about a relationship that should not be taking place but it is. Perhaps both parties are married, or perhaps one is a teacher and the other a student... whatever it is, it is inappropriate. But how can you tell your heart that the love you feel is wrong? You cant and it usually produces intense situations.

Lisa's part is about falling in love on first sight. Damien's is about what happens when one party tries to stop the relationship and break it off. When there is love and connection like that how do you live without the other person? I think he is basically saying "I cant believe you broke it off with me despite how inappropriate this is. You can move on but you won't have love like mine and you know it." Its not a threat but the simple truth.

Florence + the Machine – Dog Days Are Over Lyrics 11 years ago
I didnt really get any concepts of drinking or abuse or depression from this song. I think she is just saying that she fell in love and felt so happy and it scared the life out of her. Love made her feel skittish and like the end of the world was going to happen so she ran from it. Perhaps she had a previous relationship that broke her heart and made her afraid to love again so when she realised it (like a shot to the back of the head) she freaked out. We've all done it.

Ocean Colour Scene – Robin Hood Lyrics 11 years ago
I think all the comments have been off the mark as far as this song goes. It certainly isnt about fondly remembering something nor is it about youth and it certainly isnt about chilling out and having a smoke if you're upset.

I think he references Robin Hood to say that he is stealing memories from a richer time in his life and giving them to his current poorer, less happier self. I think he is remembering someone he loves an incredible amount but can't be with.

He then suggests to drink and smoke to deal with the pain. Its not something your mother would ever tell you do to, so in other words, its not really the healthiest, most logical and sensible way to deal with things... but it lets out the emotions. He is a bit tongue in cheek about it by sarcastically saying it is inspirational and hysterical. Its not at all. I think the point here is that he is so upset about the effect the loss of this person had on his life that why not F your self up a bit to deal with it.

Pretty real and honest.
