I always related this song to the struggles that trans people go through. "Still don't know what I was waitin' for And my time was runnin' wild A million dead end streets and Every time I thought I'd got it made It seemed the taste was not so sweet" This verse is talking about trying to find yourself, using wandering around streets and hitting dead ends as a metaphor for trying something new to try and find your own identity, but still being dissatisfied in the end, with the taste still not being sweet enough, since you still haven't found your own identity. "So I turned myself to face me But I've never caught a glimpse How the others must see the faker I'm much too fast to take that test" So, after so much trial and error, they now talk about taking a good look at yourself in the mirror. There's also mention of others seeing him as being a 'faker', which may be related to how people view crossdressers. Not entirely sure what the 'test' here might be, but my best guess is that it could be some kind of psychoanalyst therapy which may have been used back then to try and "cure" people from being trans, and of course, he's too fast (that is, the opposite of slow, much too intelligent) to take the psychoanalyst's test. "Ch-ch-ch-ch-changes Turn and face the strange Ch-ch-changes" The chorus kicks in, and this is when the subject of the song decides to go through with a sex change/hormone replacement. Facing the oddities of the medical world in order to go through with it. "Don't want to be a richer man Just gonna have to be a different man" The medical procedures cost quite a lot, so he's talking about not caring about money and using it to become a 'different man'. "Time may change me But I can't trace time" This line feels like it's talking about the possibility of having regrets in the future. Time may change their opinion, but they can't trace time... that is, they won't actually know if their opinion will be different in the future, so there's no point in worrying about it now. "I watch the ripples change their size But never leave the stream Of warm impermanence And so the days float through my eyes But still the days seem the same" Not really sure what to make of these lines, perhaps it's talking about the recovery process from the procedure, with the "ripples" here being the scars leftover, and watching them heal. The last two lines could be talking about being doped up on painkillers, doing basically nothing but eat and sleep, with the days all feeling the same. "And these children that you spit on As they try to change their worlds Are immune to your consultations They're quite aware of what they're goin' through" Obviously not talking about literal children, but simply young people who know what changes they want for themselves. We also get another allusion to some kind of psychotherapy, with the line about 'consultations'. "Don't tell them to grow up and out of it Where's your shame? You've left us up to our necks in it" Relating to the previous verse, talking about people who think that gender identity is just a phase that young people are going through. Of course, this idea is shameful, so Bowie is criticising anyone who thinks this kind of thing, by saying we're buried up to our necks in their shame. "Strange fascination fascinating me Ah, changes are taking The pace I'm goin' through" Not sure what to make of this line, maybe it's talking about coming to terms with things changing so quickly? "Ooh, look out, you rock 'n' rollers Pretty soon now you're gonna get older" Not too sure about this one either. Maybe some rock 'n' rollers insulted him and he's saying they'll soon grow up and realize how hurtful what they said was? This is the line I'm probably least sure about. Anyway, this song is fantastic. I definitely consider it one of the best trans anthems, and one of Bowie's best tunes as well. |

To me, this song is about a sexual encounter a guy has at a party with a woman, while cheating on his girlfriend, feeling disgusted about it while it's happening, but still feeling too horny to turn down the affair. The "mama" in this situation isn't someone's mother, but a dominant woman with the nickname "mama". The first verse is about the guy's experience when he first enters the party. It's essentially his dialogue when he's talking to mama, asking her about all of the questions people were asking him. We then discover their location, "Don't turn on the light 'cause I don't want to see", which hints at the two of them being in a dark room, getting ready to have sex, but he'd rather not see it for some reason. The chorus switches to the man's perspective, saying "mama told me not to come", referring to mama giving orders in bed, telling the man she's sleeping with (our main character) to not cum inside her. "that ain't no way to have fun" refers to what would happen if the guy did "come". She would get pregnant and have to raise a kid. Her days of going to parties and having sex with would be over. Not very fun, indeed. Second verse is the guy's dialogue. This is after they had sex, and mama lit up a cigarette. He's complaining about her perfume which now smells stale after mixing with all of her sweat. Again, this reinforces the part in the first verse how he doesn't actually find her attractive. The third verse talks about the cops arriving due to noise complaints. It also references the guy's girlfriend, who is now passed out on the floor. I don't think the girlfriend and "mama" are the same person, and I think this is why he didn't "want to see" in the first verse, and why he was so disgusted in the second verse... because in a way he was disgusted with himself, because he was cheating on his girlfriend with her... since he was just too horny and mama was the only one there to fulfill his desires, with his girlfriend too busy drinking and getting wasted. "I seen so many things I ain't never seen before Don't know what it is I don't wanna see no more" This references that it was kind of a scary experience. This is probably because mama was the dominant one, and he wasn't expecting it. He also probably feels like it was a mistake, hence the "I don't wanna see no more" line. |

To me, the song is saying that it's good to be aware of all of the bad things in the world, and the trials and tribulations that one might have to go through, but to not focus on them, and instead focus on the good aspects of life. "I can see clearly now, the rain is gone I can see all obstacles in my way" The "rain" here refers to troubles that he was personally going through, but even though he got through those personal troubles, there's still plenty of bad things going on in the world, obstacles for living a good life. "Gone are the dark clouds that had me blind It's gonna be a bright sun-shiny day." However, even though there are obstacles in his way, he remembers that his personal troubles have faded and for him, he's going to be able to enjoy a sunny day. "I think I can make it now, the pain is gone All of the bad feelings have disappeared Here is that rainbow I've been prayin' for." All of these lines produce an image of pushing forward and breaking through the strife you might have in your life. Forward momentum, riding atop a cheerful rainbow with good vibes carrying oneself forward. "Look all around, there's nothin' but blue skies" This line, to me, is saying that even with the obstacles one might face, if you look around there's plenty of good to focus on as well. "Look straight ahead, nothin' but blue skies" Again, references to forward momentum, pushing through bad times and focusing on the good, on the "blue skies". |

I remember reading somewhere that he originally wrote this song as a powerful ballad, but after getting so drunk during the album recording that it turned into what it is today. That leads me to believe that this is some kind of love ballad, but... the lyrics are pretty interesting to me. The whole song seems to tell the story of a man who loves someone, but they won't return his affections. The song gives off a pretty creepy, controlling vibe... If we take a look at the lines: "I can't stand no runnin' around" and "I don’t care if you don’t want me I’m yours, right now" Both of these suggest he's trying to manipulate the person he loves into loving him, and only him, despite that they might not return his affections. I feel like "I put a spell on you" line could be referring to some kind of manipulative drug, but it's likely just referring to alcohol, and the concept of getting somebody drunk enough to manipulate them into returning your affections. All in all, I really love the song, despite what it might represent. What do you guys think of my interpretation? |

I'd say the song is talking about not being able to get over a break-up, while your ex is in love with somebody else, and the reality surrounding that situation. Let's interpret this line-by-line: "How I always memorize Every single misery And I seem to glorify Everything inside of me" I feel like in these two verses she's talking about how she tends to focus on her negative emotions, and build them up to such a point where it's almost like she treats them more importantly than her positive feelings. "And the hero never dies If the lover hides Between the sheets" This line is a bit perplexing, but I feel like perhaps she's talking about her ex-partner, and how she manages to see them in a positive light (as a "hero"), just because the sex was good. However, I feel like the significance of "hides between the sheets", means that she doesn't actually think of them positively, and essentially just uses the memories of all that exhilarating sex as a false positive. This is re-enforced by the fact that she says the hero "never dies", almost as though she would want them to. This line is one of my favorites, because it perfectly tends to describe the internal tug-of-war between love and lust. "There's no escape Cause you can't sleep" This line is probably just talking about staying up laying in your bed thinking about all of the things mentioned above. "And then you'll see You're just like me" Not too sure on this line, perhaps she's hoping that her ex is also worrying about the same exact things? "That's what you call waste of time I'll be waiting down the line" Mentioning that she still wants to go back to her ex, even though her ex thought it was a waste of time. "That's what you call waste of time Waiting for your valentine" Her ex is obviously more focused on waiting for somebody else. "That's what you call waste of time I know where your hero hides" Not sure about this. Perhaps she's letting her ex know that she's aware of who her ex is going after? "That's why you don't sleep tonight" Perhaps this is a bit of a threat? Because she knows about her ex's new love, maybe she's planning something, and that's why her ex can't get to sleep at night, because they're worried about her ruining everything for them. "That's what I call-- That's what you call-- That's what I call liiiife!" If we take this in the context of the previous line, perhaps she's saying that there's nothing her ex can do about it, because 'that's just life'. "With a hero in the past You hang on to history" Perhaps time has passed now, and her ex started dating their new found love. however, like most relationships, things tended to crash and burn, resulting in a break-up. Now her ex is hanging onto their new love, just like how she's hanging on to her ex. "Such a loss will always last And there's no recovery" Perhaps she's letting her ex know from experience that there's no way to truly get over that kind of break-up. Finally, the song goes back and repeats part of the first verse, and the chorus again, starting from "and a hero never dies" I feel like this is simply here to re-enforce everything she went through with her ex. I'd like to imagine she's explaining this to her ex, after her ex's break-up with their new love. Anyway, this song is pretty fun & upbeat. I always enjoy singing along to it. My interpretation of this song is that it's about a woman who abuses drugs, and is addicted to the way they make her feel. "She got less than you or I" "She get tired" Both of these lines talk about how she feels while she's not on drugs. Then, the next few lines talk about how she feels while she's on drugs, and the things she does while on them: "She got more than you or I" "She get wild" "balling all night, balling all day" The song also gets a bit morbid, saying "She will die", but also mentions how she doesn't care, and will just smile, and enjoy her life while it lasts. Her life might also make her cry sometimes, but the drugs make everything better for her, even if it will kill her someday. |

After seeing the music video, I began to think this song is more about the relative assumed safety of medical practices. Especially the line "don't worry now, 'cause it's all under control" which seems as though it's mimicking what a doctor would say. The part about poking a voodoo doll could also be used imagery of medical practitioners trying new procedures on patients without thorough testing. The line "moping and hoping around the street again" might have to do with not being sure of your health, and "tripped in dirty water, tap" could be a metaphor for suddenly and accidentally getting a disease and being forced to see a doctor about it. It could be about more than this, perhaps the parts about cuts up and down his legs is about self mutilation, as well. Perhaps not. This is simply my interpretation. |
