| David Bowie – Underground Lyrics | 9 years ago |

'Underground' can mean perhaps four things. 1. Underground as in death, buried in a coffin. 2. Hell, with the devil, forever. 3. In the Labyrinth, with Jareth. (Although the biggest problem here is that the Labyrinth never says that the Labyrinth is underground. So to me, the idea that the Labyrinth would be underground is unfounded.) 4. The imagination within oneself; escapism as is shown in the beginning of the movie. As for death being the underground, this can link closely to the imagination/escapism. A life can be so miserable that you either escape from it via imagination (like Sarah does in the movie) or you kill yourself to escape, with hopes that maybe in the afterlife you'll "find someone true." Hell being underground is an extremely common idea in the Western world. This ties in closely to the figure of Jareth being the ruler of a world of goblins, this seems parallel to depictions of the Devil in Christian imagery presiding over a world of demons. In the movie he steals away a baby, and nearly steals away a teenager, Sarah. This song, when first mentioning the underground, can easily seem like a "deal with the devil" situation: "But down in the underground, You'll find someone true, Down in the underground, A land serene, A crystal moon, It's only forever, Not long at all." The response in the next few verses "I wanna go underground" seems like the deal with the Devil has been accepted. These lines are the most haunting to me in this song. If we take these words "its only forever" it seems to support only three of the four ideas; Death (therefore suicide), Hell, or in the Labyrinth, (the labyrinth perhaps being a symbolic representation of both death and hell.) The song, with these lines, rules out the idea that its only about fantasy and escapism; because you can't escape into fantasy for eternity; the only way to reach eternity in the mythological sense is to die and go to the afterlife: heaven or hell. This song seems to be nudging toward the latter. I think the parallel between Jareth and the Devil is obvious in many ways, he is charming, a musician, he is tempting, he plays upon immoral and hidden desires, there is sexual imagery in the Labyrinth and surrounding him, etc etc etc. He even sets up an obviously Satanic "get her to bite the fruit" scenario. He lures her with toys, crystal balls, castles, and every fantasy item she loves; into a trap. It isn't to benefit Sarah, its for Jareth's possession and ownership of her. The movie has many occult symbols in it; and Bowie being a lifelong student of occult subjects (one of his favorite books was Transcendental Magic by Eliphas Levi) I would lean strongly toward the idea that this movie and song have some occult message. I love that such a complex and mysterious movie, song, and set of themes exist. They've perplexed me throughout my childhood and up to this day. |

| Hole – Pacific Coast Highway Lyrics | 10 years ago |
|
The idea of this being a kind of Adele-esque song about killing your ex crossed my mind, but then I thought: does Courtney REALLY need that message in her repertoire of songs? No. I don't think killing someone is what this song is about, but there is a definite hint of responsibility for someone's death; Kurt's. This is one of my favorite Hole songs of all time, and I'm sure it's about the scars left behind from the death of Kurt. This was written during a time of serious rehabilitation, loneliness, and drug addiction for Courtney. From the lyrics I get that "they're coming to take me away now", the people taking her to rehab, and I imagine she's driving away from it on the Pacific Coast Highway with a gun, maybe running away from her problems. She is confused and looking to "you my northern star", not knowing what to do, and thinking of killing herself. By the end of the song she says, "You better live". What I got from the song was kind of eerie; Courtney Love driving down the same Highway with the same gun Kurt had in the same way he had when running away from all his problems, he even specifically ran away from the hospital. And now 10 or so years later Courtney struggling with the same things he did, and doing the same thing he did. It also seems as if the the chorus is talking about a flashback to when Courtney was rushing to find Kurt, to save his life, and it being in vain. "Miles and miles of regret." She feels as if she is the only way of saving him: "Your whole world is in my hand" and this is tinged in a strong feeling of her feeling guilty for not saving him when he was drowning. Overall its about Courtney being lost and "drowning" the same way Kurt had later on, remembering Kurt and learning from the mistake he made; not ending it but living on, even if she still feels the pain way later on in her life. |

| David Bowie – Lady Grinning Soul Lyrics | 11 years ago |
| I think this song might be about Bowie loving a man, but he switched he with she. I think he did this in another song too but I can't remember which one. Usually people don't think of women as having musky oil or wearing cologne. Bowie was pretty bisexual back then after all. But you know how David said this album was like Ziggy Stardust goes to America? Maybe he is singing about America as if it were a lover. Maybe that's the end of the album, summing up America, how it can be amazing but also your living end. | |
| Lana Del Rey – Cruel World Lyrics | 11 years ago |
| I'm pretty sure that this song, like others on the album, is about her killing the person she is dating. West Coast lyrics and video show this same theme as well. She killed him, and the candy and women and heroin were his, and now they're hers. She's finally happy now that he's out of her way and she can enjoy all the things he had. Ultraviolent | |
| Nirvana – All Apologies Lyrics | 11 years ago |
|
Something I noticed about All Apologies is towards the end. It think it's very deliberate Find my best of salt, everything's my fault- salt represents earth I'll take all we blame, aqua sea foam shame- aqua sea foam is obviously water Sun burn freezer burnt- is obviously fire Choking on the ashes of her enemy- ashes from incense, which symbolizes air because of the smoke. In Buddhism and Hinduism there is a fifth element which is kind of like spirit and is sometimes called the spiritual sky which explains "in the sun I feel as one" 5 elements hidden in the song :) |

| Arcade Fire – In the Backseat Lyrics | 12 years ago |
| I think driving is a metaphor for taking control of your life. The ultimate message for an album about mortality. She's talking about how comfortable it is to "ride in the backseat" which is living with your parents, living safely and at ease, she can watch the countryside and relax, but the death of her sister was a wake up call. She realizes life doesn't go on forever, so her whole life she's been learning to "drive" and she finally realizes her ultimate mortality with the death of her sister, so she finally realizes she has to learn to drive. | |
| Arcade Fire – It's Never Over (Oh Orpheus) Lyrics | 12 years ago |
| Also fits with seems like a big deal now, but you will get over, when you get older, like going through school may be hell to you and seem to last an eternity but when your done it feels like it zoomed right by and it was over too soon because you never got to appreciate all the happy things. Favorite song on the album. | |
| Arcade Fire – It's Never Over (Oh Orpheus) Lyrics | 12 years ago |
| I think its undoubtedly about the story of orheus and uerydice and their ascent from hades, but in a more meaningful way reflects how time passes so slowly while its happening to you, but looking back on everythings thats happened you realize its over too soon. Euryddice and Orpheus had a hard time, but looking back on it they realize even the horrible ascent from the depths of hell were worth something, and even that ended too soon, even though it drags on forever when its going on in your life. It says, things may drag on and be awful and you may be in hell trying to get out, it may seem like "its never over", but if you apreciate every second of your life youll realize its all passed you by and it was over too soon. | |
| Arcade Fire – Porno Lyrics | 12 years ago |
| I agree with you all but I also think its saying that not every man is a disgusting sex addict. And people constantly treating all men like it can be degrading to the men who arent. | |
| Arcade Fire – Joan of Arc Lyrics | 12 years ago |
| This is exactly the story of Joan of Arc. Its a famous story of a french profet who was burned at the stake for being a "heretic" in those days. | |
| Marilyn Manson – Count to Six and Die (The Vacuum of Infinite Space Encompassing) Lyrics | 13 years ago |
|
I think this is from Adams perspective. I think after he realises all the cruelty in the world he loses faith in everything and turns to suicide. Marilyn compares him to a her, a scared little girl. She's got her eyes open wide She's got the dirt and spit of the world Adams eyes are wide open. He is scared. He has all the bad things in the world, the spit, the dirt, in his mind. Her mouth on the metal His mouth on the gun in his mouth, also might relate to the cover, Marilyns mouth broken off symbolising the quietness people forced him, and adam, into. I've got an angel in the lobby He's waiting to put me in line I won't ask forgiveness My faith has gone dry He has accepted that he will go to hell, he just doesnt care or have faith to try and change it because hes so tired. She's got her Christian prescriptures And death has crawled in her ear Like elevator music of songs That she shouldn't hear Christianity from the modern world has forbid suicide But the idea is already in his head and planned. He should have never even thought of such a sinful thing. And it spins around 1... 2... 3 Gun turning And we all lay down 4... 5... 6 This is where i think of the columbine massacre. The kids have decided to kill the school and shoot themselves. (like adam) and everyone lays down to avoid the flying bullets. Some do it fast a quick shoot to the head Some do it better in smaller amounts We are all in the shadow of death, killing ourselves slowly instead of quick. |
