The Mountain Goats – Treetop Song Lyrics 10 years ago
I don't really think this is necessarily what John had in mind when he wrote it, but to me, this song will always be about losing my virginity. Obviously, the song tells a literal story about a squirrel or something making it's first big jump from tree to tree, But this is really just a song about going for it, and doing what you know you're supposed to do even if it's kind of intimidating. Jumping into the known unknown to paraphrase Donald Rumsfeld.

Lucero – Texas & Tennessee Lyrics 11 years ago
It's about the tables getting turned. Ben Nichols isn't a young dude, and in his life I'm guessing he's sweet talked a lot of girls that he really couldn't even make himself care about. There are a lot of people in the world who are always the ones that hold relationships back, and as someone who creates stagnation, Ben recognizes it coming from the other side. He want's something for the first time, but he knows he has to walk away because it can't go where he finally wants it to. It's the anti "Maybe I'm Amazed."

The Gaslight Anthem – Halloween Lyrics 12 years ago
1st verse - I'm a bleeding heart. Sorry, I know it's not becoming of me.
2nd verse - I'm going to the same shitty party that my girlfriend always drags me to. I'm not sure I really know her. I sure as hell don't know anyone else there. I better drink.
3rd verse - My girlfriend is dressed up pretty and I'm dead inside. Or maybe it's vice versa. I don't know because she never tells me.
4th verse - I think I sensed some realness, specifically sadness coming off of her, but I lost the trail because we're stuck at this fucking party. Maybe she thinks the insincerity is for my benefit.

The "keep it coming" part is a little hard for me to understand, but I think it's him saying he's sad enough as it is, and he hopes she'll maintain the facade of his love for his benefit.

What makes these lyrics great to me is the phrasing. The meaning is pretty straightforward.

The Mountain Goats – Cry for Judas Lyrics 12 years ago
It's about not fitting in and not having the safety net that you might have wished for, and turning that pain and failure in on itself to the point where the lines are blurred. This is a song for people that need to take things further than most people to feel anything at all, but that still doesn't fix their problems.

Bob Dylan – Workingman's Blues #2 Lyrics 13 years ago
You articulated that really well. I had never applied this song that directly to real Dylan, I saw the narrator as another drifter type character (which I guess Dylan is) mostly because I the economic hardship theme is so prevalent. But your interpretation makes this song directly personal without being esoteric , which is rare for 2000's Dylan. Thanks, you really added to this song for me.

Bright Eyes – Lua Lyrics 13 years ago
This song is about gong out to parties, taking enough drugs to feel good for the first time all day, and finding someone that'as hollow, depressed and drugged out as you. Then you wake up and all that clarity and happiness is replaced a deep loneliness and the knowledge that you're only making it worse by living that way.

I think it's important that he uses the second person, because it's acknowledging the girl as really important to the story. That's kind of the only hope in the whole song, is that he truly believes he's found someone who he understands and who understands him. And maybe in some universe they could love each other, but not here, because this is a Bright Eyes song, so the narrator knows he's too full of shit to love anyone, let alone anyone that needs as much help as he does.

Check out this version he did as a duet with Gillian Welch, it's awesome.

Son Volt – Methamphetamine Lyrics 13 years ago
The narrator is drug addict in recovery taking bad jobs around the semirural midwest. He had a consistent job working as a musician in Branson, but that led him to heavier drug use. He feels his addiction has made him unable to be free, or maybe simply left him conscious of an existing inability. Regardless, he wishes to return to a simpler time in his life, but believes he cannot. He is left with an unsatisfying life, and a bleak outlook on his future. He hopes to stay clean, but makes no promises, and believes that he cannot maintain whatever relationships he has or will have relationships.
