Lorde – Tennis Court Lyrics 10 years ago
The main thing is that "baby be the class clown, I'll be the beauty queen in tears" is an ironic statement. There might be a better way to describe this thought: but, she is saying "don't be the class clown or else I'll just be the cliche beauty queen" "and it'll be so fucking boring that I'll cry".

The point of the song is that Lorde doesn't like taking life seriously. Her friends told her that her fame might go to her head or worse...she'll become too famous to ever not care again.

Lorde – 400 Lux Lyrics 10 years ago
She is at a party but the party is lame.
Dude comes to pick her up and they both embrace the boredom of life,
together away from the party.
Driving nowhere, watching the sunset and the sunrise.
In the morning the dude buys her orange juice and
she thinks about how her breath smells.
Instead of inviting himself in to her house to catch some sleep
he leaves the car on while he drops her off.
She is swooned by how perfect their relationship is.
She wishes he would stay

Though some things can't be answered, they are still beautiful to reflect on.
There is a girl, and he cannot be with her, but he doesn't mind thinking about her.

Fleet Foxes – Someone You'd Admire Lyrics 11 years ago
At this point our hero is curious if he will ever change his woe some ways. And, if he ever does change what new person will he become...he's discovered so many identities he'd like to become.

At this point, our hero is tired of wanting more than what he can become. Tired of exploring himself. Tired of the conflict.

Fleet Foxes – Helplessness Blues Lyrics 11 years ago
I enjoy likening this to communism. I can't imagine Mr. Fox would try and make this political, but I understand what people are trying to say with their interpretations.

Dude wants to fit in, is tired of feeling alone, so he starts to fit in.
Hates fitting in
Wants out.

Fleet Foxes – Battery Kinzie Lyrics 11 years ago
This might be a continuation of the narrative from the song Sim Sala Bim which plays just prior to this one on their album Helpless Blues.

But, even if it doesn't I feel the message here is that a man realizes he's forsaken the love a girl gave him. He now realizes how much he wants that love but has to live with the fact that she is moving on. He feels as if the new man, is bad for her and that she is embarking on a terrible journey because she is naive having never known what love is.

Fleet Foxes – Sim Sala Bim Lyrics 11 years ago
In short:

Husband leaves because he feels suffocated in his marriage. When he leaves, his wife has no clue as to what drove him away because there was a lack of communication. She wonders what he is doing, and think about how she might be the problem but she doesn't care. In the end, he was too "kind" and never spoke what what truly in his heart so why should she be upset.

Fleet Foxes – Bedouin Dress Lyrics 11 years ago
If to borrow is to take and not return
I have borrowed all my lonesome life

**The song starts off by rethinking the nature of borrowing. In the context of this song, I believe the singer is referring to how he borrows love. To him, borrowing means taking someone's love but never offering his own; instead, when he is done, he gives everything back and leaves.

And I can't, no I can't get through
The borrower's debt is the only regret of my youth

**He regrets never trying to share his love.

And believe me it's not easy when I look back
Everything I took got soon returned

**His memories are filled with people who offered to share love, or some type of experience, but to them he was never able to offer anything back.

Just to be at Innisfree again
All of the sirens are driving me over the stern

**He's going mad longing for that time when he didn't care.

In the street one day I saw you among the crowd
In a geometric pattern dressed
Gleaming white just as I recall
Old as I get I will never forget it at all
Gleaming white just as I recall
Old as I get I will never forget it at all

**He'll always remember the girl who he thought he could love but never did. He'll always remember how she is just another person who gave him her love, and how he always viewed their situation as temporary and eventually gave back what he was borrowing. He knows that he has hurt people.

Fleet Foxes – Montezuma Lyrics 11 years ago
I too find this song to be an introspective exploration on the meaning of one's life where the consequence of one's selfishness is realized and debated.

My only modification to the interpretation would be to re-think what is going on in the 6th verse

Gold teeth and gold jewelry
every piece of your dowry
throw them into the tomb with me
bury them with my name

I think in this verse he is pleading with the rest of the world, with all of society, to throw away its selfish habits with him when he passes. Asking that he would be the last to have to suffer with these lonely realizations.

Really sets the mood for the rest of the album, no?

This song accomplishes in a short 3 minutes what every man finds himself thinking of at least once in his rosy-filtered reflections: "Maybe I should call her..."

A confident and happy (but not without sad overtones) bargain to reunite. Very playful. Just a great song.

Young the Giant – Cough Syrup Lyrics 11 years ago
Of course people think this song is literally about someone abusing cough syrup. Everything about that would line up perfectly with the song, its more outrageous for us to assume hes singing in regard to something else. But, he is. The song is so wonderfully crafted that he is able to hide the anguish of his confusion and desperation with life behind a cough syrup addiction.

Obviously a cough syrup addiction is detestable, much like his opinion on his life. He gets you to scorn at his lifestyle, by scorning something else. Just a greatly done song. Really fucks with the audience, in my opinion.

Of Monsters And Men – Sloom Lyrics 11 years ago
The sea said goodbye to the shore so the sun wouldn't notice
The seaweed that wrapped its arms around you

**This verse means that someone has fell ill and is on the verge of death. The sea retreated from the shore, which must have been something demanded by the sun, but managed to distract the sun just long enough for it to wrap its seaweed around you. So now, even as the sea retreats, its still got a firm hold on you. The sea is a metaphor for an illness. The sun is a metaphor for medicine/doctor/witchcraft. . .

The carpet on my cheek feels like the fall grass
And I run through the tall trees with your hands chasing me

**This verse introduces the main character, who is saddened by the fact that you are dying. (I'm not entirely sure what this is showing us)

The books that I keep by my bags are full of your stories
That I drew up from a little dream of mine, a little nightmare of yours

**This verse is showing us the importance of the relationship between the one dying, and the one who has to deal with it. Apparently, the main character has a book bag filled with all the things you ever said. Some of the things you said were said out of fear, some of the things you done were out of fear. Regardless, the main character seems to have a mature idea of why the stories are the way they are.

To be asked to take this plunge, to forgive and forget
And be the better man, to be a better man, to be a better man

** Again, the main character realizes that you are dying and must forgive and forget all you ever did to him.

So love me mother, and love me father, and love my sister as well

*I'm led to believe that a grandparent is dying by this verse

The cat's silhouette, as big as a monster,
In this concrete jungle, with street lights hanging their heads

**This verse is like a moment of clarity, during the process of forgiving. The main character is realizing that even in a crowded city, where city lights dejectedly shine their brilliance at the ground, almost defeatedly, a cat can take advantage of that despair and turn itself into a jungle cat. This means that if you slump your shoulders and feel sorry for yourself, even the smallest trespass can turn into something which seems entirely unforgivable.

So make all your last demands for I will forsake you
And I'll meet your eyes for the very first time, for the very last

*now, at your deathbed, the main character feels like a new person and wants to show you that. Before you pass, the main character looks into your eyes for the first time, for the very last.

So love me mother, and love me father, and love my sister as well
So love me mother, and love me father, and love my brother as well
So love me mother, and love me father, and love my sister as well
So love me mother, and love me father, and love my brother as well

I met a man today and he smiled back at me
Now there are thoughts like these that keep me on my feet,
That keep me on my feet.

**the main character will never forget what you have done to them, and they are better for it because they have learned from it.

Of Monsters And Men – Slow and Steady Lyrics 11 years ago
This song is about the weight of loneliness; its about the struggle to overcome your lonely tendencies. The idea is that your shadow will never let you go, or hurt you, and can be a great friend in a time of solace. However, its hard to move on when your only peer is your own loving shadow. You'll convince yourself that you're never ready to show your true colors, and that no one would ever understand them anyhow. This is a very powerful cycle, kin to powerful emotions which is symbolized by the waterfall. But regardless of how strong any of your feelings are, even if living this way makes you feel better, you'll always be moving slow and steady past the monsters in your head. You'll never become anything better if you stay cooped up, with the lights out, somehow dancing still with your shadow.

Of Monsters And Men – Mountain Sound Lyrics 11 years ago
Our hero is on the run. He knows that he is guilty and carries his guilt with him, in his shadow. Thus, to avoid his shadow, he hides during the day and flees at night. When he reflects on the people he is running from he can't help but think that they too have their own reasons for hiding and that his crime doesn't seem so terrible anymore.

I think this song is about realizing the actual weight of your decisions and not the weight that you might assume. Deals with paranoia.

Of Monsters And Men – Lakehouse Lyrics 11 years ago
This song is about two people who have been persuaded into believing (by a fox) that they should burn down a house. As they walk away from the burning house, their is a sense of regret and they return asking each other if they can "chase the fire away".

The additional lyrics, which have been excluded from their album, paint a darker image. A darker image which to them is associated with the house; this probably made it easier for the fox to persuade them to burn the house down. In the end I'm led to believe that the two associate the house with the memory of their father who might have accidentally killed his son, or their brother.

When they sing about sleeping all day in the fall, I feel as if they are saying they are depressed about losing the house.

Either way, great vocals. Just absolutely brilliant

Of Monsters And Men – King and Lionheart Lyrics 11 years ago
This song is about the Lion-Heart and how he/she convinced the king to be brave and stand his ground during an invasion. Eventually, the King and the Lion-Heart are taken captive and transported across sea. As they leave, they are drawn through the crowd of their people and the Lion-Heart is at peace knowing that nothing will ever shake his/her confidence and that because of so, the King will always have someone by his side for strength.

Great imagery with the passing clouds in the sky

"And in the winter night sky ships are sailing,
Looking down on these bright blue city lights."

At first I think the lion heart will stay with the king to thwart off an invasion, even though they are going to lose. However, they are then taken out of the city by the conquerors on boats. Even as they leave, they'll never change.

Bon Iver – Skinny Love Lyrics 11 years ago
Absolutely brilliant.
We have a tendency to stay in a relationship even if the relationship is detrimental because we want to resolve the conflict. We don't want to be alone and we convince ourselves its better to ride the storm then to break away. Even if we plead with ourselves to cut the cords and fall, our heart wont let us. And, in the end, when the relationship is over, you are left feeling jaded that your attempt to fix the issues was for nothing.
In regard to my experiences, this song is second to none.

Of Monsters And Men – Dirty Paws Lyrics 11 years ago
I feel there is a disconnect after the third line that separates the entire song. I feel that we are saying humans are really animals, but I'm not sure why that matters in the rest of the song. Regardless,

My interpretation is based on a rather simple statement: I don't think the dirty paws belong to the dragonfly. In fact, I don't believe the dragonfly did anything more than play witness to a bear destroying a beehive.

The song made me question who the creatures of the snow might be, but I believe these to be little cubs. After all, the song ends by saying the story was simply about the creature with the four dirty paws (and furry coat) so the creatures of the snow are both dependent on the aforementioned creature and auxiliary (i.e the bear was feeding the cubs).

And for a while things were cold,
They were scared down in their holes.
The forest that once was green
Was colored black by those killing machines.

...the (now dead) bees are the black killing machines, and the other creatures who had to bear witness to this atrocity tried to avert their attention by burrowing into their holes.

Something worth noting, the trees said the bees waged war against the birds; I don't take this to mean anything more than the bees were encroaching on their livelihood.

Of Monsters And Men – Little Talks Lyrics 11 years ago
Having read the band's intent with these lyrics I know that the song is about a wife who is communicating with her dead husband; not, as others have interpreted, about a failing marriage. However, I think there are two images in this song that evolve quite wonderfully and deserve comment: "sleep" and "the ship".

At first I believe the wife (widow) is saying she literally can't fall asleep. But, eventually she is talked down by the ghost/spirit of her husband and accepts that she can sleep. I think that in the end, the idea of falling asleep means two things: that she is at ease with her present situation (as a widow) and that she is ready for death to reunite them.

My interpretation of the word "ship" which is repeated in the chorus

"And though the truth will vary,
the ship will carry
our bodies back to shore."

...is a bit more complex. I see the ship as a symbol of their love but also as a vessel. She is left with the house, and in that house she will safely be carried to the shores of the "other side". Her husband is waiting to embark into the afterlife in that house, and her husband is waiting because he loves her.

Jethro Tull – Teacher Lyrics 11 years ago
I like the way mbrachman interpreted the song for us. My only request is that a source should have been provided so we could see when/where Ian made the connection between the "teacher" and Timothy Leary. My reserve with believing this interpretation, without a source, stems from a book I read called "The Harvard Psychedelic Club" in which Timothy Leary is labeled as the "trickster" and Huston Smith as the "teacher". Because of this, I am more inclined to favor the literal interpretation of mycroft45.
