Basically the opening verse talks about this girl whom Anthony has a very strong attachment towards. Someone who shared his interests and was similar to him more than others were. She's captivating and her presence in his life is addictive and almost drug-like. Hence the name of the song. However, even though they appeared to have a strong chemistry. "Take it away I never had it anyway" suggests that she passed away so quickly before Anthony could even get to know her completely and establish a proper relationship. Almost like a flash. As for the chorus, when he says 'Way upon the mountain where she died' I doubt it had anything whatsoever to do with her dying on a mountain. Sounds like a metaphor to me, perhaps what he meant was the mountain signifies the height of her addiction which ultimately killed her. And all he ever wanted was her life, to be alive and well. "Deep inside the canyon I can't hide" suggests that deep down his feelings for her are so profound that no matter what he can't hide them. Its a beautiful song, both lyrically, melodically and in its diverse meaning. My favourite from the album! |
