Gotye – Eyes Wide Open Lyrics 11 years ago
Humans are the smartest dumbest animals in existence. We have the intellectual capacity to be the healthiest most thriving species to co-exist on this magnificent and magical Earth but we kill it and ourselves with our technology and free will. Then have to go to extra lengths to undo or slow it. It's frustrating to realize and want to change it.

@[MrSwindler:448] Ouch, people can no longer interpret a piece of art in their own eyes, thanks to the "new guy" here who says only the artists' intention matters in this song meaning forum.

IllToast2That, when did Vannagurl say she was atheist? She never spoke against God, she spoke against the hypocritical Christians who make going to church unbearable.

Are you trolling right now?

Gotye – Easy Way Out Lyrics 12 years ago
After re-reading the lyrics and watching the video, it could be about those who are stuck in the rut and look to pills, bullets, bridges and rooftops & gravity to end it.

Imogen Heap – Hide and Seek Lyrics 12 years ago
I see an image of the Trail of Tears and Industrial Revolution and sweatshops when I listen to this song. I don't think Imogen Heap would find a problem with my or anyone's interpretation of it. She's an artist after all.

Gotye – Easy Way Out Lyrics 13 years ago
The way to true happiness is hard. The "surface of life" is enjoying all these material things and giving into human desires. The voices are talking whenever he indulges, "Is it really worth it? You're wasting your time focusing on these little things. You should let go of your secular desires). Hangin' around with people who are also indulging is supposed to make him happy, but it gets him down because he wishes it was easier to quit all this.

"It's easy to keep busy when you tell yourself you're traveling right." The Western way of life is the way to go! It's good to work and acquire material wealth and socialize with friends with drinks and games... right?

I wonder, why did it only take "17 seconds"?

Gotye – Don't Worry, We'll Be Watching You Lyrics 13 years ago
This song reminds me of the video for "Bronte," as though the narrator really is harmless. But the music sounds a little more menacing. Watch it while thinking of these lyrics (or with the video muted and this song playing) and you'll see. :)

Gotye – Save Me Lyrics 13 years ago
I quickly fall in love with a musician's work if it's artistic, it can be interpreted different ways through the eyes of someone who's going through something different or has experiencefd different things.

I completely understand your interpretation SamVerdin, and I feel it fits very well.
However, my interpretation fits slightly different. The morning is the start of another life in the Cycle. The second stanza reminds me of the movie with Nicolas Cage who played someone who could see into his future. Every ending at which you look, it doesn't look like you'll ever exit the Cycle of Life, but continue a menial life in human form. Then someone comes along, perhaps a higher being like Jesus Christ or Buddha Gutuma, someone who was high up, and decided to come back down "travellin' south again" to save more people by showing them how to live. The "lonely life" is one not with the Father, or one that is with the Universe. This higher being showed the narrator true love, love that goes deeper or broader than that between a man and woman.

Kelis – Get Along With You Lyrics 13 years ago
I wonder if the meaning of this song can be taken deeper. As though the love of which she's speaking is something greater than love between a man and woman. It's hard because of the chorus and bridge, as though the song WAS deeper, but so that more people could connect with it, she attached this simpler meaning. Originally it was referring to not needing material things so that one could ascend into a higher being "I'll follow the fire in the sky, and like that I'm gone." Like, she showed it to her producers, and they latched the meaning onto it so it would sell. If FilthyRich's correction is right that she said "digital fetter" instead of better, it would fit better. Fetters are chains or shackles, digital fetter and other material possessions would be chains locking one inside the Cycle of Life, only you're the one locking yourself inside by holding on to them; once you let go, you'll be free of the Cycle, and like that, you're gone.

Gotye – Bronte Lyrics 13 years ago
What I love about music is when it can be interpreted in different fashions based on one's current situation or past experiences. Though I now know his inspiration, I see the connection, but I can still apply my own interpretation. Especially listening with the music video (a child connecting with bison, then going to school leaving them in the shadows of the forest and losing them), I hear the voice of enlightenment as the narrator of this piece.

"Now that you have found oneness with the world, now that you no longer need things that sustain human life (or now you've soaked up all the knowledge [the food in the bowl] we could give; and when I took medicine to regain focus, my feet would become cold; focus leads to enlightenment), it is time for your ascension, though it is hard to accept that you must let go of your secular things and desires, but doing so means the end of your suffering."

The second verse is the voice of the enlightened one. "Ever since I discovered your path and discipled you, you have helped and your teachings stayed with me always, but I've reached the destination now."

The first voice returns to reassure the enlightened one that oneness means unity and and you're not leaving us, you're leaving this part in the Cycle of Life. Because *LYRIC CORRECTION* the very last line of the song after three repetitions of "We will be with you" is "You will stay with us." As if through enlightenment you are moving away from the earthly life into their realm.
