like how he switches up the last verse from the second, replacing all the "drunks" with "goods" ending on a somewhat positive note |

I feel you there. My dad's not dead, but it hurts like a motherfucker to watch him drink himself into submission, a shadow of himself. |

Seems like a lot of comments either read way the fuck into the lyrics, or think it applies to some asinine situation like a girl who goes out with scummy guys (seriously?). Looking at the song objectively, it's a generic, toxic relationship between an easily manipulated and an antisocial individual (what most would deem a sociopath). Simple interpersonal commentary and observation. |

This is music? Well sure, I guess in the broadest sense of the word, yes, it is music in that it has instrumentation, lyrics, tempo, etc. But I mean, if your definition of what qualifies as music includes any stipulations with regards to, say, meaning, listenability, creativity, or anything like that, then I'm sure you are mourning the death of music like I am. |

I think this song hits so much harder when you think of it out of the context of what Slug means or how specifically you apply to your own life. I love this song because it's such an anthem, to every human being, each with our own personal Lucy. Your Lucy is the thing that keeps you up at night, rehashing and digging up the past. It's the thing that you love just slightly more than you despise, and that's what makes it impossible to let go. |

I don't think the lyrics are meant to be so specific that one can say "Oh it's about the government ignoring the poor, manipulating the population blah blah blah. I mean, the lyrics are very broad: "What is in US (not meant to be U.S., just putting emphasis on the word just fyi) that turns a deaf ear to the cries of HUMAN suffering?" In other words, open up a tab and search famine in the horn of Africa. Look at the numbers, 25,000 people die every day from starvation. Look at the pictures of emaciated human beings, subject to pain that none of us commenting on this song could ever imagine. Then open another tab, go to cnn.com, or nbc, or fox, cbs, etc... Look at the big stories. Do you see a single reference? Aside from the occasional blip on the nightly news, do we ever hear about it? We've developed into a culture where we leave no room in our thoughts for the appalling tragedy around us. I want to cry every time I hear that one line, and I am ashamed of my part in this blind culture. |
