Kings of Convenience – Cayman Islands Lyrics 12 years ago
I'm fairly certain this one has to do with a long distance relationship. One of the parties dares spend the money to go to see the other and spend time with him. But the money isn't enough (or the situation is too complicated) for the two to stay in the same place, hence the "cayman islands" ref.
Everithing in this song is fanstaticly tasteful: "the wind in your hair, covering my view" meaning that fora short, well-desserverd while, he won't think ponder what could and couldn't be.
the "canals going in circles", identifying the state of the relation but also the canals of Amsterdam (i.e: the song's title originally) .
Personally, i love the way the L word is excluded in favor of "If only they had been here....", basically saying, no one's love is stronger so they don't know why someone would go to such length to just spend a couple of days with someone.
Anyway, if you feel the situation relates to you, check out "Cubism Dream", pretty much the same deal.

Cat Power – Lived in Bars Lyrics 13 years ago
Come on boys and girls! Most of her songs have lots of disconcerting lines, like with early Dylan (whom she adores btw!), but this time she's put a couple that can't be missed: "There's nothing like living in a bottle, And nothing like ending it all for the world". It's about alcoholism, both the fun of being drunk and the glory of the addicted artist dying for his art.
I would add that there might a reference to "Between the bars" by Elliott Smith, which is also a song about ... wait for it! .... alcoholism! There you have it ;)

Wye Oak – Civilian Lyrics 13 years ago
ok it's about someone who can't get away from a present/past relationship and is in another one, in which he/she hurts the other person who has nothing to do with the matter at stake. I don't put it the right way but it's why it's called civilian: because of the pain it causes to a civilian...

Bob Dylan – Don't Think Twice, It's All Right Lyrics 13 years ago
most beautiful song addressed to god. I know most of you think all songs are (USA ppl) or to an ex-gf. This song is definitely half Joan Baez or so and half God.

Belle & Sebastian – Dress Up in You Lyrics 13 years ago
"Because you’ve got a beautiful face
It will take you places
(...)Every morning I see you picture from the train"
God knows I listened to my share of good songs, but these lines make it to the Pantheon. The irony of it all is that these things might be natural for Stuart Murdoch, like he could be the subject of his own song in a weird way.

Van Morrison – Glad Tidings Lyrics 13 years ago
I wish this formidable song had more meaning than what it is: the negotiation of a contract with an American major in the late 60s... sorry people ;(

The Decemberists – Here I Dreamt I Was an Architect Lyrics 13 years ago
This song is written by someone who's browsing through his library: obviously, all stories are genuine but there aren't much of a link between any two of them. It's creative writing at its best! Colin sampled the books he read to sing the alcohol produced from the distillation of these authors. Colin is obviously the only writer who can compare to the likes of Stuart Murdoch or Neil Hannon!

The Smiths – Cemetry Gates Lyrics 14 years ago
Just to add something to the discussion, I do believe the rest of the Shakespeare quote comes handy: "The early village COCK Hath twice done salutation to the dawn; ... In the next verse Richard says: "O Ratcliffe, I have dreamed a fearful dream! What thinkest thou? Will our friends prove all true" I think it's a kind of weird both sexual and loyalty reference here. But again it's just my opinion, I don't expect anyone to care for what i said.. ;)
